Well my youngest has just pinged back. The designer Kevin McCloud of Grand DESIGNS wears the Spanish shirts 😂

I'll try to find a picture

After all the awful threats to Amalia it's no wonder the Dutch RF like a bit of privacy but the optics aren't great. I always assume because we love Max, everyone does 🤣

I agree. They could have rented a villa but chose to buy one. William was yachting around Greece recently go to the Caribbean in the winter. Margaret owned Mustique. I'd hate Balmoral for a whole summer and Mey.

The Spanish have a government looking for a royal fight hence Majorca. Grassen every summer, no thanks.

Maxima and family have been through some frightening times. I wish them the best.

Are the Danish royals related to the former Greek royal family?

Yes, they are.

OP posts:
Maireas · 06/08/2025 10:37

Also... pretty much all of the Royal families of Europe. Apart from the Grimaldis.

Yes, they are.

I thought so, which to me makes it acceptable (plus private).

eggandonion · 06/08/2025 10:58

Are the Grimaldis related to anyone? I'm off to Google them!

They don't seem to have gone down the Schleswig Holstein Sonderberg Glucksberg Battenberg route, like other royal families.

Princess Grace was a top princess though. I seem to remember she read things on Stars on Sunday when I was small! Their family tree seems fairly removed from Queen Victoria.

Maireas · 06/08/2025 11:19

Yes, Grace was fascinating, I've read a couple of biographies about her. True, they're not descendants of Victoria.

The shirt with white trousers and I think Canvas shoes.

King Willem Alexander is a descendant of King George II through the latter's daughter Augusta. So a bit further back than Victoria. However, he has Hohenzollern and Mecklenburg antecedents as well, so that could be another link.

A you tuber called useful charts has many interesting facts all the European royalty have common ancestors , the Grimaldi's are like 6th cousins while most of the others are 3rd and 4th cousins. also site has lots of like who would be king of France Etc if still a monarchy.

Long time lurker saying hello and thank you for my favourite thread on MN! Princess Anne is in the news here in Ireland visiting President Michael D. Lovely smart skirt suit but I do wonder why she’s wearing the navy gloves. President Higgins meets Princess Anne at Áras

Thanks, @Cottagecheeseisnotcheese . It's fascinating, I once saw a programme about people who claimed that certain crowns were rightfully theirs!

@SunMootStars - afternoon and welcome!
Yes, Anne is an habitual glove wearer, we think it's because the late Queen always did. She likes that horse brooch, I think our resident brooch expert would be able to give an ID.
Thanks for joining us 🙂!

I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that Anne wears gloves so that she doesn’t have to actually touch the hands of the people she is meeting when she shakes hands.

I have no idea if that is true though!

I think it goes back to a time when people always wore gloves when out, because hand washing facilities weren't readily available. I think it was also a social marker for women for a long time. When I was a child I had a beautiful pair of lace gloves that I used to wear to Mass!

My grandmother always wore gloves when out

Choux · 06/08/2025 20:33

An 8 week vacation to your €5m Greek villa is quite the summer break! Plus am sure they have long weekends there in spring and autumn. I think they also ski in Switzerland in winter and naturally Max wants to visit her family in Argentina. It all mounts up and it’s bad optics if you never holiday in the Netherlands.

...and mine added a hat to the gloves! This was in the 1930's though 😁
