I think Margaret's Mystique era coincided with kaftan wearing. It was quite a moment. Demis Roussos aside.

Some of Margaret's jewels are very recognisable, the lotus tiara, which Kate has worn and the Cartier Scroll tiara which she used as her wedding tiara.
Margaret of course wore the fabulous Poltimore Tiara. Since sold.

Is there anyone left with George VI order? And why is Margaret wearing 4 here? The green one I think is Edward VII (her grandad) the pink George VI (her dad) the yellow Elizabeth II (her sister) but why the 4th one?

i am weirdly obsessed with these orders. I bet the ladies hate wearing them as they do ruin the look of so many dresses!

IIRC it might be another ribbon/order which is pinned below her family orders. Can't remember exactly but I'm sure I saw this quite recently...

TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal · 16/07/2025 15:42

Princess Margaret

If you look at photo 9 my hunch is that it'll be something akin to the extra ribbons she wears here, or possibly even one of them. Haven't identified them but maybe others will know.

Yay I knew I'd just seen it! It's the Imperial Order of the Crown of India.

TwerkingRoyalNotWorkingRoyal · 16/07/2025 15:51

Sigh...not below (don't mind me, getting things muddled up as usual).

The Imperial Order of the Crown of India is the one at the top.

Serenster · 16/07/2025 16:46

Is there anyone left with George VI order?

Princess Alexandra is the last surviving holder - it’s the pink ribbon here.

Thanks - some great pictures here! She looks so pretty in pic8.
I love the one of her and Elizabeth Taylor, they admired each other's jewellery!

How about a Princess Margaret fashion fest?
Some very glamorous looks here, I love pics 11 and 19. Interesting caped evening dress pic 58 that looks quite modern.

Picture 8 - the pink and white dress - looks like Minnie Mouse and I can't unsee it!

I know what you mean! The style and colour of the dress and hat. She was only 19, she looks so pretty, such striking blue eyes.

@Serenster are the orders given by the reigning monarchs to select relatives? Do you know how it works?

OP posts:
WhistlingStraits · 16/07/2025 18:46

Those ‘orders’ are just hideous. I’d really hate to be forced to wear one. What on earth is the point of them nowadays?

I don't think they're "hideous". Just no better or worse than any other type of formal decoration. They're not as large as the Danish elephant, for example. Smaller than a big sash.

A rewear for Camilla, honoured for championing literacy through her charity. This dress style works for her, and we see it repeated in various colours. The additional fine stripe adds a bit of interest. Camilla never has a bad hair day!

Ah, seems ok now. And Leonora was presented with an award by her father, watched by proud mum and sis.

Camilla's blue dress I think is a classic for her, the strong blue and her favourite silhouette. I'm guessing the brooch is significant?
Leonor looks fantastic in that uniform, very smart and I think she's completed her training?
Leti's dress I don't like, it's a rare fall for me with all frills and tiers.

@Maireas "I love the one of her and Elizabeth Taylor, they admired each other's jewellery! "

Sorry - I am sure everyone knows this story but it always amuses me

"In 1982, Taylor wore her Krupp Diamond ( set in a ring) Throughout the evening, Princess Margaret repeatedly snubbed Taylor. The most glaring was when the princess remarked that the Krupp diamond was "the most vulgar thing" she had ever seen. The glamorous movie star permitted the persnickety royal to win that round, but it was not the end of the matter.

When Taylor and Princess Margaret saw each other at party a few weeks later, Taylor laid her trap. Again wearing the Krupp Diamond. she asked Margaret if she would like to try it on. After the princess eagerly slipped on the ring, Taylor inquired, "Doesn’t look so vulgar now, does it?"

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 16/07/2025 21:38

Given that that diamond weighs 33 carats, while Cullinan III & IV, owned by Margaret’s sister weigh 94.4 and 63.6 carats respectively, I don’t know why Margaret said that…

Maireas · 16/07/2025 21:41

The auction of Elizabeth Taylor's jewellery raised £ millions for her AIDS charity, so it served a good purpose after her death. She had some beautiful pieces.

Could be because a massive diamond set in a frivolous Hollywood star's cocktail ring was regarded as vulgar and an ostentatious show of new wealth; versus diamonds set in a sceptre and a crown within the Crown Jewels, used for occasions of state and forming part of the nation's heritage. Or just envy 😂

NewAgeNewMe · 16/07/2025 22:59

Princess Margaret really was a beauty when younger.
