How often do you wash your hair?

My hair is the type to get greasy quick - as in the next day. If I spend along time using products and blow drying it properly (1+ hours) and using dry shampoo, I can get about 4 days out of it max. I work with someone who washes their hair one a week, doesn’t use dry shampoo and their hair looks normal and nice every day. I’m curious how often others wash it? And yes I have tried to train my hair - doesn’t work

fine hair so needs to be washed daily

Iamtarticus · 01/07/2025 19:53

Fridays and Tuesdays

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 01/07/2025 19:54

Twice a week. If it looks greasy between washes it goes in a pony tail. I hate washing my hair!

SuperBlondie28 · 01/07/2025 19:55

When it needs it. I have natural dark blonde hair with a bit of grey and blonde highlights and it shows when roots get greasy. It wouldn't show on a dark haired person or would look shiny. I work with dark brunettes.

Hatty65 · 01/07/2025 19:56

Once a week, max. Sometimes I leave it 10 days. It used to be quite greasy, but I'm post menopause and it now feels pretty dry if I wash it too often. It's curly and grey and I just use a co-wash without sulphates or silicones. I just let it air dry and never use heat on it. It still feels very dry on the ends and I often put oil on the ends of it now after 2/3 days.

apostrophewoman · 01/07/2025 19:56

About once a fortnight! However I co-wash it every day with two different conditioners, one to ‘wash’ and one to condition. Mine is thick and naturally curly and this keeps it in very nice condition.

Once a week. It must be straightened and blow dried so I need to limit the amount of heat damage hence why once a week. Plus it takes ages

Exactly the same for me!

Once a week

housethatbuiltme · 01/07/2025 19:58

Probably every 3-4 days but 5 days not unheard of. I don't really use products at all but buy day 4 or 5 I'll probably have it in a smoothed pony tailed as opposed to it being fluffy and down.

If I have nothing on and not leaving house, not feeling well etc... then maybe up to 7-8 days but it will be greasy by that point.

I have long but very fine hair, not sure how that effects anything though.

Those of you who do once a week what do you do with sweaty exercise?

SilviaSnuffleBum · 01/07/2025 19:59

Every other day or every 2 days.
I don't use any product, save for shampoo and conditioner. Nor do I use a hairdryer.
I have natural beach waves and I bloody love my hair.
I stopped dying it last year and am growing it long, grey, wild and free!

way2serious · 01/07/2025 19:59

Every day or I don’t feel fresh and clean.

Is that in the UK?

Yes. It’s unusual here isn’t it? But omg it’s the best money I spend every month.

I don't, I physically can't do sweaty exercise due to my disabilities.

Gettingbysomehow · 01/07/2025 20:04

I only need to wash it once a week and it looks fine. It never looks greasy.
I do wash it more than that when im at work because it's the nhs and we have to shower twice a day. So I'll wash it a few times.

Skissors · 01/07/2025 20:04

Every other day. I can stretch it to 3 days now am mid 50s , it looks ok but it feels itchy.

Used to wash it everyday as a teen. With timotei - think that was their tagline.

Doggymummar · 01/07/2025 20:06

Weekly, sometimes twice a week

Mine still looks okay even after sweaty exercise.

Every day. I hate the feeling of not having clean hair.

Same here, and mine doesn't look very nice unless it's washed every night.

Every day. My hair is fine, thin and greasy. I look like a homeless drug addict if I go more than 24 hours without washing. Actually, just sleeping on it is enough (I’ve tried washing before bed, it looks horrendous by the next afternoon.)

People don’t understand. They say dumb stuff like your hair is addicted to washing or if you wash it less often, it will somehow get used to it and produce less oil. Believe me, I’ve tried.

There is something to be said for the over washing argument. My mum was a hairdresser and when I hit teens my hair went very greasy. I got locked into an endless cycle of washing and styling it, which made things worse. Mum took me aside and explained that while I thought daily washing was necessary, it was actually that very thing that was the cause of the problem. Washing too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, and all that happens is that your body responds by producing more oil to compensate. So you get a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Using lots of product is also a problem because it can block pores, leading to irritation. Mum taught me some game changers. Gradually increase the time in between washes so that it’s about once a week. Don’t use a lot of shampoo - the equivalent of a scant dessert spoon full is enough. Use warm, rather than hot water and don’t repeat the shampoo cycle more than twice each time. With time you’ll notice a decrease in the oil production and the situation will right itself. If your hair is greasy, don’t use conditioner - the grease will do the job of the conditioner for you. And if you absolutely must, use it on the ends only, not the scalp.

PurpleYarnivore · 01/07/2025 20:13

Every 3-4 days . It’s waist length n dead straight n thick .i let it dry naturally when i can but it takes many hours . I have a heavy fringe which is what needs washing or I’d leave it longer .

fiorentina · 01/07/2025 20:13

Daily, I like it to smell fresh and it stops it being lank.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 01/07/2025 20:15

Every day. It's never been coloured, blow dried or had product on it.
It's naturally wavy / curly.
Tried leaving it longer in the pandemic but it looked awful.

OldEnoughToFancyBobGeldof · 01/07/2025 20:15

Used to be once a week but since peri menopause every other day.
