How often do you wash your hair?

My hair is the type to get greasy quick - as in the next day. If I spend along time using products and blow drying it properly (1+ hours) and using dry shampoo, I can get about 4 days out of it max. I work with someone who washes their hair one a week, doesn’t use dry shampoo and their hair looks normal and nice every day. I’m curious how often others wash it? And yes I have tried to train my hair - doesn’t work

Once every 7-10 days, but I have afro hair and it hates being washed.

Envy you mate!

If I don’t wash mine every day it’s sticking to my head 😩

I was also an every other day but since the menopause, I'm now twice a week.

I'm going through the memo too. But my head sweats so much I need to wash it every day.
When will it all end.....

Every 3 -4 days. My hair is very dry and is much better condition if I don’t wash too often

Twice a week. I have a subscription at a blow dry bar. Yes I know that’s frivolous and I don't care.

My dream!! Prob twice to three times a week

isitmeamithedrama · 02/07/2025 01:22

Every second day, I can manage every third but only if it’s tied up and I use dry shampoo on the front of it
it just looks flat and dull if I don’t.

Mine's greasy too

I try and wash it every other day

It starts looking greasy after 36 hours

BreakingBroken · 02/07/2025 02:22

I shower and soak it down daily, and follow with conditioner to keep it moisturized.
Once a week I soak, shampoo and follow with conditioner.
I have dry curly hair.

Ha! Mine is veeeery dry and I live in a hard water city, which wrecks it. I wash it with filtered water from the fridge 😂 I also CBA to do that more often.

I don't do any excercise

If I'm very sweaty I'll wash it more often. I only wash it once a week if it's not boiling hot and I haven't exercised or gone swimming. I don't want to whiff.

hairyunicorn · 02/07/2025 10:19

I have afro hair, I wash it once per month.

I have fine thin hair, and I used to wash it every day, but I've trained it so that I can go around 3 days between washes now. Obviously, if I get very sweaty or something, I might need to wash more often than that, but 3 days is the average.

There is something to be said for the over washing argument. My mum was a hairdresser and when I hit teens my hair went very greasy. I got locked into an endless cycle of washing and styling it, which made things worse. Mum took me aside and explained that while I thought daily washing was necessary, it was actually that very thing that was the cause of the problem. Washing too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, and all that happens is that your body responds by producing more oil to compensate. So you get a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Using lots of product is also a problem because it can block pores, leading to irritation. Mum taught me some game changers. Gradually increase the time in between washes so that it’s about once a week. Don’t use a lot of shampoo - the equivalent of a scant dessert spoon full is enough. Use warm, rather than hot water and don’t repeat the shampoo cycle more than twice each time. With time you’ll notice a decrease in the oil production and the situation will right itself. If your hair is greasy, don’t use conditioner - the grease will do the job of the conditioner for you. And if you absolutely must, use it on the ends only, not the scalp.

I can guarantee you: all of us lank-haired ladies have tried this!

Your hair oiliness is like your skin - and if you're prone to acne. You can try and improve the condition from the outside, and for some it might make an impact, but often it's hormones or just genetic disposition that makes it happen. Some people are blessed with great genes, some are not.

I have very fine, very straight hair that needs washing every day. If I blowdry and put product in I can get away with about 1.5 days (so morning one day and evening next day). Tried it all. Hate my lifeless hair but we just have to make the best of it. Some people with really thick or frizzy hair have to spend ages styling it - I just wash and comb and airdry. The grass is always greener on the other side!

Every other day. I could probably stretch to every 3 days but then would feel like it was getting a bit greasy, plus every other day just feels like an easy routine to stick to.

In this recent hot weather (and if on a sunny holiday)I've been washing it daily in the evening but then leaving it to air dry. It looks a mess and needs tying up but that's been fine as it's been so hot.

MintGreenDream · 02/07/2025 17:11

I'm so jealous of everyone here who can get away with more than a day. I'm blonde, my hairs thin but lots of it, and I use product so my hair looks unclean after one sleep.
