How often do you wash your hair?

My hair is the type to get greasy quick - as in the next day. If I spend along time using products and blow drying it properly (1+ hours) and using dry shampoo, I can get about 4 days out of it max. I work with someone who washes their hair one a week, doesn’t use dry shampoo and their hair looks normal and nice every day. I’m curious how often others wash it? And yes I have tried to train my hair - doesn’t work

Every other day. I used to be able to stretch it to once every 3 days occasionally, but since I chopped a lot of it off, so I can’t tie it back, I find it gets greasier quicker.

3KidsPlusDdog · 01/07/2025 20:17

Every second day. Sometimes, if I can, I leave it go to the 3rd day.

My friend washes hers only once a week - a professional blow dry. You would never know by looking at it

I was also an every other day but since the menopause, I'm now twice a week.

I've gone into premature perimenopause, this gives me some hope for the future😂

Arrivederla · 01/07/2025 20:24

People who only wash their hair once a week (or less!), surely your hair must smell a bit by the end of the week?? It must pick up cooking smells, pollution etc.

I mean, even if it's not greasy it'll still be dirty?!

Beautifulcreatures2 · 01/07/2025 20:24

It used to be every three days. Now it's just when I remember.

There is something to be said for the over washing argument. My mum was a hairdresser and when I hit teens my hair went very greasy. I got locked into an endless cycle of washing and styling it, which made things worse. Mum took me aside and explained that while I thought daily washing was necessary, it was actually that very thing that was the cause of the problem. Washing too frequently can strip your scalp of its natural oils, and all that happens is that your body responds by producing more oil to compensate. So you get a vicious cycle that’s hard to break. Using lots of product is also a problem because it can block pores, leading to irritation. Mum taught me some game changers. Gradually increase the time in between washes so that it’s about once a week. Don’t use a lot of shampoo - the equivalent of a scant dessert spoon full is enough. Use warm, rather than hot water and don’t repeat the shampoo cycle more than twice each time. With time you’ll notice a decrease in the oil production and the situation will right itself. If your hair is greasy, don’t use conditioner - the grease will do the job of the conditioner for you. And if you absolutely must, use it on the ends only, not the scalp.

As I said, I have tried. All the things you mentioned.

With all respect to your mum, who I am sure is great at cutting and styling hair, all the things you mentioned do not affect how much oil my scalp produces. I have never used a dessert-spoonful of shampoo on my hair, because there’s barely any of it. I never put conditioner on my roots, because (see above) it gets so oily.

I have tried, believe me, I have tried to increase the amount of time between washing. NOTHING WORKS. My scalp produces the amount of oil it produces. It has nothing to do with how much I wash it and it will not be ‘trained’.

I only need to wash it once a week and it looks fine. It never looks greasy.
I do wash it more than that when im at work because it's the nhs and we have to shower twice a day. So I'll wash it a few times.

What NHS job do you have to shower twice a day. I get you might want to, but HAVE to?

Yes. It’s unusual here isn’t it? But omg it’s the best money I spend every month.

Do you have a link, please?

GreatTheCat · 01/07/2025 21:32

Once every two weeks, seriously. I stick it up in a messy bun. It's long and I never dry it or straighten it.

I'm so lazy.

Snippit · 01/07/2025 21:38

Sometimes I can go for 2 weeks, with the help of dry shampoo, I also tend to tie it up after the first week.

I don’t condition whilst it’s wet, I use Olaplex No7 oil and No6 leave in styling treatment for moisture where needed, my hair is layered and approximately collar bone length.

whackamole666 · 01/07/2025 21:40

Not often with shampoo and conditioner, but I get it wet most days when showering as it's short hair and dries quickly.

Too much product isn't good for hair.

SamDeanCas · 01/07/2025 21:40

Once a week. I have long hair so have it up most of the time and it takes me ages to wash and dry.

Clocloxx · 01/07/2025 21:42

Once a week and blow dry it

PilatesAndLattes · 01/07/2025 22:08

Everyday. If I skip a day it looks very greasy by night time the second day so I can’t leave it. Also tried to train it to no avail.

Hallywally · 01/07/2025 22:20

Weekly. I’m not a sweaty person & don’t do any exercise & don’t have a physical job. My hair is bleached so dry & brightly coloured so loses colour very quickly if washed more often. I used dry shampoo and always tie it back.

Daisyvodka · 01/07/2025 23:05

I was every other day up until 2 years ago, then I went to about every 2 days - my preference is twice a week as it helps my colour last longer and im trying not to use heat on it, but its that annoying 'not quite straight, not quite wavy' plus a fringe so I do need a hairdryer at least a bit! I would have never have said a few years ago I could do only twice a week.
Weirdly, if I use dry shampoo on it (so say on day 3 of not washing) it looks rubbish on the day, but good the next day?

Same here.

RedBeech · 01/07/2025 23:11

Every other day. It's fine and straight and also unfortunately, though I never get sweaty armpits, I sweat from my scalp in this weather. So hair has to be washed every other day or every day if I am doing workouts

HotHorseRadish · 01/07/2025 23:14

Another one with fine, thin, straight hair and I haven’t wash it very day. I went travelling in my 20s which involved periods of rough camping and bring unable to wash it for days on end. If just got more and more greasy. No amount of training could fix that issue unfortunately.

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/07/2025 23:15

Daily. 61, still have greasy hair and oily skin.

Big upside, hardly any wrinkles 😃

Spookywoods · 01/07/2025 23:17

Every morning. I leave my hair to dry naturally. My hair is very fine and I think blow drying will destroy my hair even more.

I agree I have tried to train my hair and go longer between washes, it dursbtbwitk fit be. I only wash my hair once in every day with a 5p sized amount of shampoo. I have tried leaving it abd trying to put up with being greasy like during lockdown, it es vile and I went back to bc every day. I only condition the or the once a week.

I had a boss who came out with the same claptrap about training it to last longer. My hair is shiny and soft and often I get compliments on the condition.

echt · 01/07/2025 23:47

Once every three weeks.

givingitupok · 01/07/2025 23:49

Once every 7-10 days, but I have afro hair and it hates being washed.

Ruthietuthie · 01/07/2025 23:52

I don't wash it anymore. I go to the hair-dressers for a wash and blow-dry every week. It looks great until day five, and day six and seven, I wear it in a slicked back bun style or a twist. If I have a special event, I bring my hair-dresser visit earlier. I hate blow-drying my hair and just decided to stop doing it.
