Purple hair on a "mature" lady

Ameliel · 17/06/2025 11:18

Hi, please can I have some help/ thoughts from you lovely stylish ones! I am 48, size 10, fairly ordinary and boring looking. Work as a senior engineer in relaxed and open minded company. I have a shoulder length bob,
and a septum piercing.. if this is relevant. Now, I went to a festival last weekend and dyed my sand coloured hair into bright purple for that, loved it! I've always wanted to try a bright colour but been too scared. The colour will wash off over some weeks, but the thing is, I actually really like it and wondered if I could rock it in my ordinary life? Or do I just look ...sad and old and d esperate to look younger? Please help me, is it a keeper or should I dye it back to my roadside brown as soon as possible? Edit- Sorry I can't seem to add photo so you'll just have to imagine how I look!

It just screams ‘Leftist’ which is fine if you are.

So what's that got to do with anything?
🤔Having blue hair doesn't make me a tory - I'm neutral on that front.

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 17/06/2025 15:55

The only thing you've done wrong here is ask for opinions 🤣
I'm late 40's and had purple hair for years.
I'm not trying to be 'cool' or 'edgy' or 'relevant' I just like purple and give zero fucks what anyone else thinks 😂
Do whatever makes you happy.

I see someone has said they've never seen an adult look good with purple hair, does this mean that babies and small children look ok with it.

No. I've never seen anyone of any age with purple, blue or green hair that I liked the look of. It's often paired with quite
boring clothes too- denim and band t-shirts. It's not an interesting look but there's no age limit on it.

I lost it at ‘mature lady’! A mature lady is 70 odd. You are not a mature lady. Do whatever you like with your hair.

Sorry, but I’m 71 and would hate to be thought of as ‘mature’. Makes me think of stinky cheese.
As for the OP-she should do whatever she likes!

MuddlerInLaw · 17/06/2025 18:12

Having seen your photo, @Ameliel my first thought is that the colour’s a teeny bit bland. (Which might read as ‘apologetic’.) If that was DIY, might I suggest taking your head to a professional colourist once you feel ready? They could make your hair look a little more intentional.

Greenartywitch · 17/06/2025 18:57

Do whatever you like with your hair OP!

There will always be people who judge you on how you look and frankly who cares about their miserable opinions...

Iloveeverycat · 17/06/2025 19:42

I am 60 and have purple and pink hair go for it.

saltandvinegarchipsticks · 17/06/2025 19:48

I’m 49 and have hair the same shade, OP. I don’t care if other people don’t like it, it’s my hair not theirs. And if they want to judge me for it, that’s their issue not mine.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 17/06/2025 19:51

Do it. It really suits you. And feel free to wear it with band T-shirts or whatever else you might want to. Some people on here will only be happy when everyone looks identical, but only if identical means just like them.

No a 70 year old is , well just a 70 year old. I don't like wacky hair colours but it's neither here nor there if others do, but as pp said , cheeses are "mature".

As I seen it, when an older woman dyes her hair a strong vibrant colour, she has to adapt the rest of the her toilette. Blusher, because the dye tones are too stark on an older complexion; whiteish teeth as opposed to long yellow teeth, and also well kept hair, aside from it's colour

evilharpy · 17/06/2025 19:52

I have very tame blonde highlights but love pretty rainbow hair colours. We went to visit a potential primary school for my daughter a few years ago and the deputy head had long curled hair in different rainbow pastel colours, it was so beautiful and I always remembered it.

I couldn't be arsed with the upkeep myself but if you can, definitely go for it.

Also 48 is not what I'd consider a mature lady, I'm 45 and barely out of my teens!

Why do you think anyone's judging you? Not liking this type of hair isn't judging , it's just not liking.

She HAS TO, does she?

And long yellow teeth - WTF?? You might have long yellow teeth, but I think you will find most of us 40-somethings do not!!

Don't be silly! The OP asked opinions, I gave mine

BeretRaspberry · 17/06/2025 20:03

Go for it, OP! If you love it then why not?

But please, as a nearly 50 year old, don’t say 48 is mature!😂

largeknitter · 17/06/2025 11:23

Honestly…if I see anyone with purple/pink etc dyed hair I just think “desperately trying to look edgy/relevant”.
Surely you could do other things with your hair to jazz up your look? Get rid of the Bob and go for a pixie cut/an undercut/short back and long on top etc?

I'm mid 50s, and have purple streaks for the last 10 plus years, and I don't give a shit about being "edgy" or "relevant" I do it because I like it

HTH

I'm not judging the hair but I'm certainly judging the "mature lady" comments and the apologetic tone from the OP about the fact she's 48.

Wow that's fabulous! I wish I had the balls to do it (I'm early 70s and blonde).

Well we are all different. I love the look you are describing (just bought a couple of new band tees today!).
Boring to me is that quiet luxury/neutral/classic look that loads of influencers seem to love. Just hearing somebody say 'Im a neutrals girlie' makes me want to heave!

Its just funny how some people think 'wacky' hair colours is boring or leftist or ageing when the people sporting it really couldnt give a tinkers cuss what anybody thinks.
Boring to me would be somebody who wears the same outfit everyday with barely even a change in colour to tell the difference!
As for what looks ageing, I think in terms of walking sticks, zimmer frames or those shopping trollies with seats on!

Holluschickie · 18/06/2025 14:01

Perhaps it's best to let people think what they want in their own heads as long as they don't share their opinion of your hair.
That's not judging.

EmmaStone · 18/06/2025 14:17

I've got a purple and pink ombre creation on shoulder length hair, and have had it for about 5 years now (did it going into lockdown). I was fed up with dying my hair, but wasn't ready to embrace my grey (I'm probably 95% grey). The previous many, many years of brown dying was also damamging my hair, so my hairdresser recommended a colour depositing shampoo (the brand I use is Celeb Viral - dreadful name!), and I've been using it ever since - my hair is in wonderful condition, I use the colour shampoos once a week and it fades a little in each wash.

Feedback is almost always positive, from young and old, and in a period of my life that can traditionally be a time that you become more invisible, I'm the opposite - people always remember me now, and I think it's helped me at work to stand out. I don't do anything else 'edgy' or 'crazy' (although I work in a creative industry, which helps I guess - no-one bats an e), my clothes are fairly classic. I just have purple hair.

I think yours looks great, and it's only been positive for me.

Nannyfannybanny · 18/06/2025 14:29

One of the hairdresser's iny salon has bright purple hair,,her clothes are no way boring and she doesn't wear any denim.

Luckily not everyone is horribly judgmental and OP it looks fab I am the same age and think you rock it!
