Purple hair on a "mature" lady

Hi, please can I have some help/ thoughts from you lovely stylish ones! I am 48, size 10, fairly ordinary and boring looking. Work as a senior engineer in relaxed and open minded company. I have a shoulder length bob,
and a septum piercing.. if this is relevant. Now, I went to a festival last weekend and dyed my sand coloured hair into bright purple for that, loved it! I've always wanted to try a bright colour but been too scared. The colour will wash off over some weeks, but the thing is, I actually really like it and wondered if I could rock it in my ordinary life? Or do I just look ...sad and old and d esperate to look younger? Please help me, is it a keeper or should I dye it back to my roadside brown as soon as possible? Edit- Sorry I can't seem to add photo so you'll just have to imagine how I look!

To me that's only a light colour. I would go all over violet 😂 seriously it's a nice shade and what other people think should not be a consideration . These days things are different. If you decide not to because of what others think you will regret it. Wear what you want, have your hair and makeup how you want.

doublec · 18/06/2025 14:51

Given your use of mature, was expecting you to be in your 70s. At 48, you're only two years younger than me.

Misses point of thread completely 😂

OP, if you like your hair that colour, continue with it. No-one cares, and I mean this kindly. The only person invested in your hair colour, is you. You'd actually be surprised how many haven't even noticed you've changed your hair colour in the first place!

hellopeople123456 · 18/06/2025 14:57

ooooh op I love it. You look great. I would be tempted to go vibrant purple all over as I think you could pull that off

Westfacing · 18/06/2025 15:05

At 48 you are not 'mature' my girl!

I know two women in their 60s who have a similar colour but a bit more intense and they both honestly look great! One in particular has beautiful thick swishy hair in a longish layered bob and the colour gives it edge without looking like she's trying to be 'edgy'.

Both have it done at expensive hairdressers, so the tones and finished look are top notch.

It's a keeper for now then you can change to something else if you get bored - absolutely no need to revert to roadside brown Grin

I‘m 47 and this is my “signature” hair colour. Has been for about 5 years now. I get complimented and asked several times a week by complete strangers what colour I use.

I have 13 piercings (6 in each ear and a nose piercing).

Go for it. Life is short and who cares what anyone else thinks?!

henlake7 · 18/06/2025 15:32

What Im curious about is why purple is so popular?
Does it suit lots of skin tones? or is it that your hair takes purple dye better?
or just that lots of people love purple!?

(if I could Id love to dye mine dark green.😊).

Gettingbysomehow · 18/06/2025 15:47

I had pink hair for years but subtle, mainly tips and a layer under the blond, I loved it. Last year I grew it all out as I got fed up with the time and expense sitting in the hairdressers and have gone back to my natural colour which is quite pleasing as the white has more or less taken over. I'm 63 so by no means young.
I'd avoid block colour over the whole head when you are older.

I have hazel eyes and a cool skin tone. There are lots of colours that don’t work for me, but even my dad says this is the colour I should have been born with!

(mine are highlights, done every 3 months and then I dye over the top with a semi-perm mix of purples so it’s never the same twice. fades to bright pink and then I top it up.)

I spent my 20s and 30s and most of my 40s being too worried about what people thought of me to wear and do what I wanted to my hair . I’m now in my 50s and embracing things. I’ve had a few facial piercings and have long grey hair (ohhh heaven forbid an oldish woman having long hair) and I wear whatever the hell I want. I’m loving it. So I say go for it. Imagine lying on your death bed remembering you were too worried about dying your hair purple.

ginasevern · 18/06/2025 16:52

If it suits you and you like it, that's all that matters.

That looks really nice, the style too,

Allergycream · 18/06/2025 17:10

Do what you want and be happy if others dont like it well they dont have to look.
I dont dye my hair anymore.
But i have septum piercing plus nose ears 7 in each belly button nipple lady jane im almost 40 and i dont care.
If i see anyone with different hair clothes or what ever their style i dont think oh look at trash walking or they look desperate for attention i think good for them standing out doing their own thing.
We would all look stupid and boring if we all looked the same.

Thank you. My hair is currently marinading having been bleached earlier today!

Honestly…if I see anyone with purple/pink etc dyed hair I just think “desperately trying to look edgy/relevant”.
Surely you could do other things with your hair to jazz up your look? Get rid of the Bob and go for a pixie cut/an undercut/short back and long on top etc?

How judgemental of you. Maybe they just like it, like the OP.

”relevant” to what?

FlightCommanderPRJohnson · 18/06/2025 20:29

Go for it, whyever not? It's hair, you can change it if you decide the colour isn't for you after all.

Plantladylover · 18/06/2025 20:34

I thought you were going to talk about a woman in her 70s.

48? mature seriously?

I'm 50 and definitely don't put myself in that category!

re hair - oh I know someone in their 70s with purple hair and just think it's a bit weird/sad. but who cares what anyone else thinks. if you like it just do you

RaininSummer · 18/06/2025 20:35

I am waiting for my retirement so I can have pink or purple hair as wouldn't work in my job. Never too old.

ChocolateGanache · 18/06/2025 20:37

MuddlerInLaw · 17/06/2025 11:26

Every single person on this planet is ‘relevant’ @largeknitter. It doesn’t require any effort whatsoever to be so.

Quite. 👍

ViciousCurrentBun · 18/06/2025 20:39

I had a lady come in the shop I volunteer in who has white hair but who uses purple shampoo so had loads of bright purple streaks. Hair up on a bun wearing a flowery summer dress with lots of petticoats. Huge chunky bunch of fake pearls with velvet amongst them. She looked wonderful and was around 80 to 85. It’s very conservative where we live so she stood out, I complimented her and we had a great chat about fashion and altering clothes to fit. Do what you like.

Coffeeishot · 18/06/2025 20:42

LadyLucyWells · 17/06/2025 11:23

48 is 'mature' now? Go for it! You are young. And anyway, I have seen purple hair looking great on 80 year olds!

I couldn't get by that! I must be geriatric at 54 .

Op the colour is fine it will wash out im sure plenty of "maturer " women dye their hair funky colours. Mind was bright red at 48.

In what way is someone in their 70s with brightly coloured hair “sad”?

Far, far too many people don’t get to celebrate that age, so the suggestion that those that do should be looked down on is disgusting. If I make it that far I may well go for a multicoloured Mohawk with added feathers and anyone so much as glancing sideways will be corrected accordingly.

Diversion · 18/06/2025 20:51

I am 58 and have short purple hair, piercings and just a couple of tattoos and dress exclusively in black. I love my hair and will always be myself. I gave up caring what other people think about how I look a long time ago.

Hedjwitch · 18/06/2025 20:57

I'm 61 and mine was a plum colour until last year when I buzz cut it all off. It grew back a pure, silvery white which I now love, although it took a bit of getting used too! My spiky white crop is cool but I did like the plum too.

Nanof8 · 18/06/2025 21:14

I'm 66 and have had my hair various colours since I first put pink streaks in it in 2008. Currently I have blue and purple streaks in my hair. So colour your hair whatever colour you feel happy in.
