Purple hair on a "mature" lady

Hi, please can I have some help/ thoughts from you lovely stylish ones! I am 48, size 10, fairly ordinary and boring looking. Work as a senior engineer in relaxed and open minded company. I have a shoulder length bob,
and a septum piercing.. if this is relevant. Now, I went to a festival last weekend and dyed my sand coloured hair into bright purple for that, loved it! I've always wanted to try a bright colour but been too scared. The colour will wash off over some weeks, but the thing is, I actually really like it and wondered if I could rock it in my ordinary life? Or do I just look ...sad and old and d esperate to look younger? Please help me, is it a keeper or should I dye it back to my roadside brown as soon as possible? Edit- Sorry I can't seem to add photo so you'll just have to imagine how I look!

I think too many, especially women, people worry about being judged and that they should fit a certain mould, it's a following the herd mentality and personally I find it so depressing.
I dislike the idea that every woman over a certain age seems to go for a pixie cut, everyone to their own but looking nearly scalped isn't my thing and I'd NEVER embrace grey or white hair at any age for myself. I started going grey at 18 and soon put a stop to that.

It makes me laugh when people say it looks like you're trying to look young. Yes, our parents and grandparents didn't dye their hair fun shades, so it might seem like a 'young thing' to some. But those of us in our 40s, 50s 60s have been using Directions and Crazy Colour for decades and we are allowed to continue to do so.

DontReplyIWillLie · 17/06/2025 12:06

Phyllis totally rocked it. Shame Percy didn’t seem keen.

Do it op.

Write off anyone who would have a negative opinion of this as the absolute fun draining bore they clearly are.

DPotter · 17/06/2025 12:07

I have purple hair - have had for 18mths or so. Currently also have bright blue streaks too.

And I love it. Get the occasional double take from people, but no negative comments.
Go GO GO for it!

I lost it at ‘mature lady’! A mature lady is 70 odd. You are not a mature lady. Do whatever you like with your hair.

Ameliel · 17/06/2025 13:33

Thank you so much all of you, I'm so happy most of you agree with me that I should keep it! I love the colour and feel it does brighten my face, i dont look so washed out now. And few people complimented it on today's school run...but my mum hates it! HmmBut you are so right, life is short, gotta do what I think is right! Purple it is then, for a little bit longer at least! And yes I agree I'm not very "mature"...in attitude at least! Grin..just wanted to emphasise that I'm not quite as fresh looking as the gorgeous lady in my link. Thank you all!

@Ameliel That colour really suits your skin tone, definitely keep it ❤️

Starlight7080 · 17/06/2025 14:37

If not now then when!
Enjoy your hair . Do whatever you want to it. You will always have people who won't like it and people who love it. No matter what style or colour. But its only you that matters.

henlake7 · 17/06/2025 14:38

If you love it and it makes you smile then do it!

I really dont get how unnatural hair colours could be considered a young thing though. I dont think its ever really been a mainstream trend and I see people of all ages with coloured hair.
(Im actually jealous.....Im not allowed weird hair colours in my job. All bets are off when I retire though!).

Starlight7080 · 17/06/2025 14:38

Plus it really suits you

Trickedbyadoughnut · 17/06/2025 14:45

I have a job in quite a conservative office, but I've always said I'd love to go bright when I leave!

LilacpointMummy · 17/06/2025 14:46

It looks really great I think you should keep it!

I am biased though - when I grew out my hair dye about 7 years ago, I've coloured mine purple ever since.

I add purple dye drops from Siperdrug into my shampoo and conditioner, so I don't have to dye it separately and it's always a nice shade.

I get so many compliments for my hair - far far more than I ever did when it was dyed dark.

CNDflag · 17/06/2025 14:49

I’ve been dying my hair bright colours since I was 15, I’ve no intention of changing my whole look now!

Nannyfannybanny · 17/06/2025 14:53

It looks fabulous, and you have far more "for" votes.. one of my neighbours is in her 70, her hair is shaved at the back spiked on top, and various shades, pink, blue purple, lots of tattoos..no one imagines she's trying to look young. When I was a kid in the early 50s, there was a lady in our village we called the pink lady, always dressed in pink, pink, hair pink nails, pink poodle. I would imagine she was in her 70s..Im 74, was a natural blond, front went white,so I did pink sometimes pale, sometimes cerise. My old colleagues loved it. One friend in her 60s has dark hair, royal blue low lights, another almost 70,has a pixie cut, post box red black fringe, upkeep costs her a lot!

DeSoleil · 17/06/2025 14:54

It just screams ‘Leftist’ which is fine if you are.

vincettenoir · 17/06/2025 14:54

Nice colour, go for it.

ChaToilLeam · 17/06/2025 14:56

Love it, have fun with it! Ignore the nay-sayers on here. It's only bloody hair.

Nannyfannybanny · 17/06/2025 14:56

I see someone has said they've never seen an adult look good with purple hair, does this mean that babies and small children look ok with it.

DontTouchRoach · 17/06/2025 14:57

I'm your age and I've got a dark brown bob with a forest green panel through the front. I really wouldn't worry about pastel purple.

People who make negative judgements based on something as trivial and harmless as your choice of hair colour are such bitter, joyless bores that you can safely ignore them. They're the last idiots on earth anyone should be seeking approval from.
