Purple hair on a "mature" lady

Hi, please can I have some help/ thoughts from you lovely stylish ones! I am 48, size 10, fairly ordinary and boring looking. Work as a senior engineer in relaxed and open minded company. I have a shoulder length bob,
and a septum piercing.. if this is relevant. Now, I went to a festival last weekend and dyed my sand coloured hair into bright purple for that, loved it! I've always wanted to try a bright colour but been too scared. The colour will wash off over some weeks, but the thing is, I actually really like it and wondered if I could rock it in my ordinary life? Or do I just look ...sad and old and d esperate to look younger? Please help me, is it a keeper or should I dye it back to my roadside brown as soon as possible? Edit- Sorry I can't seem to add photo so you'll just have to imagine how I look!

@henlake7I saw someone earlier as I was meandering and they had amazing green hair, it looked glorious. I say do it!

I thought you were going to talk about a woman in her 70s.

48? mature seriously?

I'm 50 and definitely don't put myself in that category!

re hair - oh I know someone in their 70s with purple hair and just think it's a bit weird/sad. but who cares what anyone else thinks. if you like it just do you

Of course it’s not weird or sad. Why on earth would it be more weird or sad than say a thirty year old doing it?

”relevant” to what?

Well, quite. Do we become irrelevant once we reach a certain age??????!

BitOutOfPractice · 18/06/2025 22:55

I think that the problem with coloured hair like this is that, no matter what your age, the colour is never as good as on the box / in your head / as when you come out of the salon so it just ends up looking bland and scruffy. IMO anyway.

CaptainSensiblesRedBeret · 18/06/2025 23:02

My job reminds me every day how life can change in an instant. Rock that purple and give no fucks about what others think

It doesn’t if you use hairdresser grade colour and look after your hair.

I know a woman that does the ashy gray on the top and then a purple color on the underneath. I love it and she looks great with it and she’s probably about 60 or 2. It’s so well done that it’s not in your face but when you notice it, it looks awesome. Subdued but elegant really. It’s very classy looking. I wish I had the nerve but I’m a chicken.

This. you can buy some professional colour from Sallys now. Shop or online. I recommend brand wunderbar for colour tubes. I used to use colour freedom but found as I have long hair if I got hot the dye would come out on my neck. This never does.

HelenCurlyBrown · 19/06/2025 07:44

It’s a bit of cliché, but the joy of getting older is increasing invisibility - so dye your hair whatever colour you fancy.

I’d rather purple than ‘embracing my grey’ tbh.

hoopyvest · 19/06/2025 07:51

Old bloke here (67).

Go for it. Who cares how old you are? Show a bit of the old punk spirit (even if you weren't ever a punk).

An elderly woman at our allotment (older than me, anyway) died her hair a bright colour - can't remember which off the top of my head - and she looked great!

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/06/2025 07:52

I have a 47 year old friend who rocks long flowing dark purple locks.

BitOutOfPractice · 19/06/2025 11:16

Obviously a lot of people don’t though @AmIHumanOrAmIAYeti andcdont dye it often enough and sport 3-4 inches of roots.

pinkdragonfruitlatte · 19/06/2025 11:37

We get one life, why spend it blending in to appease dullards who think you’re trying to be edgy? Stuff ‘em. Your purple is lovely and if anything I’d just say go brighter next time. Have fun with it and be happy.

Oh. But you lumped us all into that group. Thanks for the clarification.

I always feel like at least some of the people who are super judgemental about the free spirits of this world are the same people who will get to old age and wish they had just gone out and done some of the things they complain about!😊

Abracadabra12345 · 19/06/2025 11:47

I’m 60s and have worn purple hair for years. I’m also regularly complimented for it by men and young people. I’m so used to it, I can’t imagine being any other colour and it suits my skin tone and what I wear.

I have shoulder length, (naturally) slightly curly hair

Noshadelamp · 19/06/2025 11:55

You're not old, do it if you want.

All through my forties I had different hair colours but I'm now into my fifties with a few health problems and I can't be bothered anymore.

I regret a few things I'd wished I'd done and meant to try but at least having fun with my hair isn't one of them.

So do it now while you feel like it!

Abracadabra12345 · 19/06/2025 18:29

LilacpointMummy · 17/06/2025 14:46

It looks really great I think you should keep it!

I am biased though - when I grew out my hair dye about 7 years ago, I've coloured mine purple ever since.

I add purple dye drops from Siperdrug into my shampoo and conditioner, so I don't have to dye it separately and it's always a nice shade.

I get so many compliments for my hair - far far more than I ever did when it was dyed dark.

How do you do that exactly? What purple dye drops? I need to hear more, as a purplehead!

This is what I use - I mix it into both shampoo and conditioner and it keeps it lilac.
I don't measure it I just bung it in and give it a good stir until the shampoo/conditioner is quite purple.

Ameliel · 20/06/2025 17:49

Thanks all for the comments and encouragement! I've had lots of compliments about my hair in RL so have embraced bright purple now, and absolutely love it !

I think it depends on the hairstyle and personality & style of the person. I’ve seen purple hair look great on lots of people of different ages .
