Is The Guardian trolling us with this wedding guest fashion edit?

Has anyone else seen The Guardian’s "Best Wedding Guest Dresses" article from last week? It's so bad... Even the opening image is a weird choice! (One girl actually looks like she's in pain??) And the clothes are all awful.. Not a single thing I’d wear and most of it looks horrendously unflattering. Am I the only one who thinks this is a list of what NOT to wear to a wedding??

I agree OP, everything looks ugly/unflattering/boring and that header photo is hilarious 😂

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 09/06/2025 09:42

Oh, the dresses are very odd, especially the first! Guardian fashion section is normally ropey though.

alwaystimeforteatime · 09/06/2025 09:44

The more I look at the header photo, the weirder it gets! What is the odd crochet fishing net around the woman's waist? Why does the woman in cream appear to be in pain? Why are half of them in bare feet?

Why are there so many unflattering hip ruffles? And who would wear a brown sack dress to a wedding??

OP posts:
PandyMoanyMum · 09/06/2025 09:46

The gold smocked dress - I am howling. Only if you were intending to look like a buxom wench!

PandyMoanyMum · 09/06/2025 09:49

Fluid short dress looks like glitzy pyjamas. Oh OP this is the laugh I really needed!!

Or the one below it – which can only be described as having Minnie Mouse vibes 😬 I actually don't know which one I like the least (maybe the yellow one with the black bows?? Maybe the red sequin pants suit?? – it's quite an achievement to have put together a list of 30 such unflattering outfits! I just don't understand how it ended up published!

I can’t stop looking at it! all the models look like the want to be put out of their misery.

MondayYogurt · 09/06/2025 09:52

I wanted to post about this but forgot, you are so right!

Swamp colour dresses in weird cuts do not say wedding to me. Shrek is not my style icon.

The person who chose the photo header could probably do better.

amooseymoomum · 09/06/2025 09:53

they look like old sacks and the colours are bizarre. You would not see me wearing those for any occasion never mind a wedding

JaneWithTheUntidyHouse · 09/06/2025 09:53

The sack dress makes me think of that other thread with the competitively minimalist poster who said she only had 2 dresses, 2 skirts and 2 cardigans and who was quite judgemental about people who needed a reasonable selection of clothes to go through life.

PandyMoanyMum · 09/06/2025 09:55

Did they let chatGPT go a bit rogue? I can’t see how any human could pick such a lot of fugly clothes.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 09/06/2025 09:56

I think they're all fine, however, I don't adhere to many of the thoughts about MN wedding guest attire anyway.

Header photo is funny, the second on the right's expression rather sums up my thoughts about this topic nicely.

Edited to add that the header picture is the clue as to whom the dresses are actually aimed at...

spoonbillstretford · 09/06/2025 09:57

I think the header photo is a better example compared with the dresses picked out by the stylist.

The only one I'd possibly wear is the bias cut maxi dress. But even then I have a much nicer Ghost version in emerald green.

Glitchymn1 · 09/06/2025 09:57

I miss the laugh emoji! They’re awful.

There are SO MANY beautiful wedding guest outfits around – I don't understand how these are apparently the best. Is there some kind of advertising thing going on where the journalist can only choose from certain brands / sites?? Even so there are better options... it's utterly bizarre!

Nothing says wedding like a pineapple dress 😂

PandyMoanyMum · 09/06/2025 10:00

The model in the M&S drop waist dress looks LIVID - I think she might smack someone with that handbag!

DeSoleil · 09/06/2025 10:00

Bloody awful except for the pink Milan midi one which my daughter has but it’s very casual and would look awful as a wedding guest outfit.

evtheria · 09/06/2025 10:01

Is this the one with the brown smock with black circle? Saw someone on Twitter say 🔔bring out yer dead, bring out yer dead🔔

Edit: Just read it and yeah, it’s that first dress, that looks like it’s for a kindy art teacher who loves grunge music.
I personally like the green diagonal stripe number, though the colour wouldn’t suit me… but I like a few items from that brand (Sika Designs), they do brilliant prints and sculptural/structured shapes.

😂I just looked up the link on twitter and the first post is:

"Please tell me this was curated by someone on their last day of work at The Guardian following a very messy employment dispute."

OP posts:
spoonbillstretford · 09/06/2025 10:06

I quite like the pineapple dress but not at that price, and I'd wear it on holiday rather than for a wedding. The little red linen dress or the pink linen maxi might be nice, but I'd want to see it on a model, with some accessories and a jacket or cardigan, to see how it might look for a wedding.

I do wonder at the absolute state of journalism at times, I mean all my life I've found they are five years behind with trends and who the fuck are they to give me advice or an opinion but this takes the biscuit. I could do better myself in ten minutes looking on the internet.

ungratefulcat · 09/06/2025 10:06

Wow!
Thank you op, that is comedy gold!
I am quite open minded about fashion and style and different preferences but I dont think even a supermodel could look good in most of those

bge · 09/06/2025 10:08

I like the ombré arket silk one. The first one is so hilariously bad with the socks and children’s shoes. I’m in shock

Moltenpink · 09/06/2025 10:09

Quite bizarre. Why are half of them “oh well it’s not really wedding but ok if it’s casual”. IT’S AN ARTICLE ABOUT WEDDING OUTFITS

Oh and awful adverts.

BruceAndNosh · 09/06/2025 10:09

The first one, brown sackcloth with weird chest motif looks like a Martha uniform from Handmaid's Tale.
And what is this trend for fugly shoes ruining a semi decent dress?
