Is The Guardian trolling us with this wedding guest fashion edit?

Has anyone else seen The Guardian’s "Best Wedding Guest Dresses" article from last week? It's so bad... Even the opening image is a weird choice! (One girl actually looks like she's in pain??) And the clothes are all awful.. Not a single thing I’d wear and most of it looks horrendously unflattering. Am I the only one who thinks this is a list of what NOT to wear to a wedding??

The pink and white one would make a nice beach cover up thingy... I think you could go in any supermarket and get a nicer dress for a wedding.

GameOfJones · 09/06/2025 11:23

Omg that first dress. I can just picture her ringing a hand bell chanting "shame....shame."

Fingernailbiter · 09/06/2025 11:23

I reckon the journalist was dared to see what they could get away with.

I reckon the journalist was dared to see what they could get away with.

Many of those dresses are genuinely the ugliest garments I've ever seen in my life, entirely unrelated to what context. A few are totally fine but so many literally look like cheap Shein/H&M fast fashion tat (the black minidress?!). Maybe the Guardian's goal was to see how many people they could troll with the ugliest dresses from brands that charge eye watering prices.

I think it's an age thing. Most are fashionable in the here and now, but probably not what someone in their 40s up would consider fashionable or even nice.

Yes. Fashionable and nice are two very different things completely, as is 'appropriate wedding attire' which is very much a thing on here 🙄

The irony is I would not wear any of the dresses in this article but would also not wear the majority of the things linked to/posted about on the many many many wedding guest threads on here either 😂

The header photo is from Getty Images so clearly a stock image. If you search the photographer, you can find other awkward photos from the same series with the pained looking guests: https://www.gettyimages.at/search/2/image-film?family=creative&phrase=wedding%20guest%20Maria%20Korneeva&sort=mostpopular

The image and the clothes are entirely unrelated to the article itself. Pretty lazy AI journalism going on.

Edited

Of course it's a stock image, it's a cheap filler articles designed for clicks so there's very little input involved, something the dresses themselves are testament to 😂

Thindog · 09/06/2025 11:34

That brown sack would be great for a pilgrimage, just add a few ashes and job’s done.

doofdoofdneighbour · 09/06/2025 11:36

The SIZE of the feet on the header photo - particularly the one in the toothpaste/fishing net atrocity.

Shodan · 09/06/2025 11:37

The first photo reminds me of the Costume Box you get in primary/junior schools for their nativities/plays (and about the same level of sewing skill too)- Peasant 1 or Shepherd 3, that kind of thing. Maybe even Donkey, Front Half at a push.

ruethewhirl · 09/06/2025 11:39

When I saw the first one I wondered if this was one of the Guardian's spoof articles. What a monstrosity! I saw a few in here that were quite nice, but most are horrible and only one or two suitable for a wedding imho.

Mind you, I think there are some horrible clothes out there generally, at the moment, some awful dresses in particular.

PermanentTemporary · 09/06/2025 11:41

I stand by that a lot of these would look pretty good on the right person at the right wedding. It shows what's happened to fashion journalism that the poor sod writing this has no budget for a photoshoot, so takes a selection of mismatched and too-casual images from the retailer websites, and has to write plaintively that we need to add 'statement necklace and glamorous accessories to make this wedding-worthy'. The whole point is that most of us can't translate the fashion aesthetic, we need someone to show us how it works, but nobody's got the budget any more. Maybe they need to go back to employing fashion artists no doubt for peanuts

Gettingbysomehow · 09/06/2025 11:41

This type of clothing doesn't age well. I often look back at photos of relatives weddings in the 60's with my sisters and we all have a good old laugh at what everyone is wearing because the average person looks pretty awful in catwalk fashions of the day.
Whereas a classic look never ages, I have photos of my grandmother back in the 30's attending weddings and she looks absolutely fabulous. She always dressed well.

ClosetBasketCase · 09/06/2025 11:45

I literally wouldn't be caught dead in any of them!! Dear god!

Pinkyplat · 09/06/2025 11:46

I'm imagining a wedding where every single outfit from that article was being worn by one of the guests.

Now that would be a wedding album to remember...

This would be amazing 😂

This might be the ugliest dress I have ever seen

fffiona · 09/06/2025 11:54

The Jigsaw "draped tie" dress says less "wedding" and more "dishevelled nun" to me.

henlake7 · 09/06/2025 11:54

I didnt hate all of them TBF, but only a couple looked like wedding guest outfits to me.
More of them looked like basic summer dresses, then a few 'mooching round the house' dresses.

But alot of high fashion is frigging awful looking so maybe thats what it is!

Delphigirl · 09/06/2025 11:56

It’s the single cap sleeve that swings it from truly awful to the stuff of actual nightmares

Echobelly · 09/06/2025 11:56

The patterned shift near the start and the pineapple dress I like, but why they would lead with a dress that literally looks like a sack with a cartoon cowpat on it, I have no idea!

LittleBitofBread · 09/06/2025 12:09

I like the Arket and Sika ones.

Delphigirl · 09/06/2025 11:53

This might be the ugliest dress I have ever seen

That was one of the few I actually liked 😅having said that, I think it's more of a holiday/pub garden dress than suitable for a wedding...

AnonymousBleep · 09/06/2025 12:13

Yep, they are all hideous. Surely nobody would ever wear the first one to a wedding?

And urgh, so many smocks.

AnonymousBleep · 09/06/2025 12:13

Delphigirl · 09/06/2025 11:53

That's not even the worst one! I'd say that might even be one of the least horrible ones.

Americano75 · 09/06/2025 12:17

I would literally rather wear an actual wedding dress and take the flak for it than wear that fucking sack dress thing.
