Has anyone else seen The Guardian’s "Best Wedding Guest Dresses" article from last week? It's so bad... Even the opening image is a weird choice! (One girl actually looks like she's in pain??) And the clothes are all awful.. Not a single thing I’d wear and most of it looks horrendously unflattering. Am I the only one who thinks this is a list of what NOT to wear to a wedding??

Is this the one with the brown smock with black circle? Saw someone on Twitter say 🔔bring out yer dead, bring out yer dead🔔

Edit: Just read it and yeah, it’s that first dress, that looks like it’s for a kindy art teacher who loves grunge music.
I personally like the green diagonal stripe number, though the colour wouldn’t suit me… but I like a few items from that brand (Sika Designs), they do brilliant prints and sculptural/structured shapes.

Edited

agree - the green striped one is the only one I do like in the entire list

I agree the shapeless swamp dresses are feckin 'orrible for a wedding.

But I actually think there are some lovely dresses among that selection, at fair price points, too. I can imagine some women would look stunning in the Arket silk dress, the floaty watercolour floral dress, the more sculpted floral strapless two piece.

And if it was an arty, colourful wedding, the lovely red organza mini dress, even the bright green satin one, could look good on women with great legs. (But not if they stood together in photos. Then it would look like some dubious club night for Santas' elves.)

EBoo80 · 09/06/2025 10:11

I assume it’s implicitly trying to be sustainable by encouraging people to buy something they will wear beyond a one day wedding.
unfortunately most of them would double for fancy dress, so they might have missed their brief…

spoonbillstretford · 09/06/2025 10:12

I'll save this for inspiration when I have to go to a wedding where the theme is "Grumpy Lampshade".

My favourite is the Jigsaw one where they're waxing on about the bold colourway choice of oxblood and Hockley blue, totally having overlooked the fact that that pairing
/ draping will look exactly like Yoda in Jedi robes.

Taken ‘don’t outshine the bride’ to new levels here

jay55 · 09/06/2025 10:14

I like the pineapple one, for a holiday not a wedding.
The first one is the most sack like sack ever sacked.

StooOrangeyForCrows · 09/06/2025 10:14

That photo looks like an image of survivors of a plane crash in the Brazilian jungle.

planetfall · 09/06/2025 10:15

That first one (from Emiko) is sheer genius; it looks like someone finger painted on an econowife. Clicks are clicks, though, and all publicity is good publicity.

😂Correct. Don't outshine the wheelie bins round the back of the venue more like!

Tinglytoes · 09/06/2025 10:16

The green M&S dress is fugly

Thelnebriati · 09/06/2025 10:21

I don't get fashion but those choices seem to be 'wedding on a cruise ship' or a lentil weaving smock.

alwaystimeforteatime · 09/06/2025 10:22

I've just realised that it's the same journalist who did a column on 'best spring jackets' that was just as weird and uninspiring (although definitely not as hilarious) https://www.theguardian.com/thefilter/2025/may/02/best-spring-jackets-women-uk

Not sure how she got a job as a fashion editor?!

The more I look at the header photo, the weirder it gets! What is the odd crochet fishing net around the woman's waist? Why does the woman in cream appear to be in pain? Why are half of them in bare feet?

Why are there so many unflattering hip ruffles? And who would wear a brown sack dress to a wedding??

Yep. First glance at the header photo: didn’t really notice anything.

Then I saw the woman who appears to be in pain.
the woman in mint in some sort of loin cloth (over the dress). Over half are barefoot. The candles on the floor would be a massive fire hazard given the swishy dresses (if the candles were lit).

and the whole composition (facial expressions, colours, outfits etc.) just ends up looking bizarre.

edit: and the shoes are incredibly unflattering. But not everyone will agree with that assessment🤷‍♀️

SomethingInnocuousForNow · 09/06/2025 10:22

I saw this! I know absolutely nothing about fashion but these are just awful!

whoopdeedoo · 09/06/2025 10:24

It is hilarious. WTF are the shoes with the first dress as well!

I actually saw an article over the weekend with the first image under the headline something like ‘if you catch me wearing this to a wedding, stage an intervention’ - so another journo picked up on it too! So annoyed I can’t find it!

333FionaG · 09/06/2025 10:25

I wouldn't wear any of those in public, let alone to a wedding! I'm pretty sure I could rustle up a suitable outfit from the clothes that I've already got.
Who is it aimed at? What's their target market? Because it certainly isn't me.

Genevieva · 09/06/2025 10:25

Reading the Guardian is one big trolling experience these days. It saddens me because one of my ancestors was involved in founding it.

alwaystimeforteatime · 09/06/2025 10:26

This is from the same journalist's Spring Jackets article - the caption barely makes sense (and as for an electric purple jacket being one of the 14 best spring jackets currently available....I don't really know what to say)

"Classed as a chore, this jacket from Colourful Standard is available in 23 shades and will leave the purists curling their toes. Yet, with so many pretty colours to choose from, perhaps you’re too preoccupied with the electric ultraviolet one to mind. Excellently made, in Portugal from organic cotton, this is a versatile beast."

Its obvious the writer thinks "fuck it, nobody reads this & being paid the bare minimum"

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 09/06/2025 10:29

All a bit Grayson Perry. Actually there are a couple of mums at school that press in those giant 5 yer old party frocks...

PlayingDevilsAdvocateisinteresting · 09/06/2025 10:34

amooseymoomum · 09/06/2025 09:53

they look like old sacks and the colours are bizarre. You would not see me wearing those for any occasion never mind a wedding

I might do some gardening in one or two of them...

Denimrules · 09/06/2025 10:37

Agreed, a truly duff collection of frocks. We had a christening at our church yesterday. Most ladies wore smart floral dresses and espadrille wedges. There was one person in a short dress, pink, smart with pockets. Carried off very well. There was nothing like any of the outfits on Guardian website. I was service warden. Skirt, top, big necklace

That paragraph is so badly written it makes me want to scream.
