Is this haircut dated?

Piptoodle · 04/06/2025 15:30

I‘ve just come out of the hairdressers. This isn’t me, but my hair looks exactly the same (just a bit darker).

I like how it looks from the front, but not the back/side.

Make me feel better about it?

Hair is more about the way it looks on your face than anything else.

Your clothes can look dated, your hair is fine.

This^

Allmenotyou · 05/06/2025 23:46

I think it looks lovely op as long as you like it what does it matter but having to asked online about it i take it you dont really like it.

However.
I had the same cut 2 year go i will be honest it aged me just not a cut for me and i hate to say it but some said wow you went for the karen cut.
I liked it for about 3 days and i just shaved my head and started over.
My hair is now shoulder.

Zov · 05/06/2025 23:47

Oh I'm so sorry @Piptoodle but that is my least favourite haircut. EVER. I really dislike it. 😬 My hairdresser tried to palm off this haircut - the inverted bob - to me several times about 14-15 years ago, and I kept refusing. She mithered me one too many times and annoyed me, so I swapped hairdressers.

This haircut has really negative connotations too.

And it is horribly dated IMO. I haven't seen anyone with this since the early 2010s - at least 14 years.

Nikki75 · 06/06/2025 17:04

It's not dated at all .. looks really nice I'd say timeless .

wizzywig · 06/06/2025 17:06

Oof that takes me back to the early 90s when I did my work experience in a hairdressers. Looks like I'm in a minority as I think it's dated.

Piptoodle · 06/06/2025 17:06

I wasn’t expecting this thread to get so many replies!

Here are 2 photos of my hair now, one from each side. After washing it and sleeping on it, I think it looks a lot flatter now. And the back not so extreme. Hopefully it looks less like the original photo now, and not so dated.

It definitely seems like a Marmite haircut!

I’m 40 later this year btw, maybe it’s a midlife crisis

I (usually) hate that 'inverted bob' haircut @Piptoodle But weirdly, from the pics you have posted, it looks kinda nice. Blush Weird! Maybe it depends who's wearing it. Grin

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/06/2025 17:09

It’s nice - and it looks as if some soft waves could be lovely in it too.

Nannyfannybanny · 06/06/2025 17:40

Anyone interested, I am 74 with a soft bob in-between chin and shoulders, fringe
.I don't suit very short hair at all.. menopause 42 and hair thinned dreadfully, never came back.

DoYouReally · 06/06/2025 17:43

Ah your photo update makes it look softer than the earlier post.

I like it but I would curl/tussle it occasionally just for variety.

cissyfromchepstow · 06/06/2025 17:56

It’s gorgeous 😊

Piptoodle · 04/06/2025 17:38

I‘m feeling better about it now 😊 DH just came home and said it is nice and much better than before.

I‘m hoping once I‘ve slept on it it will be a bit flatter at the back and not so rounded.

I never like the way they style it in the hairdressers and have to wash and do it myself before I’m happy.

justgoandgetpizza · 06/06/2025 18:04

Karen is a horrible term but I do think the haircut is a bit dated.

sorry OP, only got to page 3! I’ve seen your photo and it’s fine I think Smile

latetothefisting · 06/06/2025 18:15

you did yourself a disservice by posting the first pic of someone else, your actual cut in the new pics doesn't look that much like that at all - yours looks much nicer - softer cut and the colour is much more blended - the two tone thick blocky highlights in the 1st photo were what gave it such a 'speak to the manager' (i.e dated) look.

My hair looked exactly the same as the original pic (apart from the colour). Hairdresser used barrel brushes which made it look a lot more rounded at the back. Now that I’ve done it
myself it’s a lot flatter.

My hair is my natural colour, I think I have natural highlights but luckily not so blocky.

Oh your hair is much nicer! The graduated aspect is much more subtle. It's lovely op.

Skulling · 06/06/2025 18:37

It’s lovely OP! Much nicer than the original pic I reckon. This has actually reminded me of the first time I took my DDs for a “proper” haircut aged 4 & 5 and the hairdresser blow dried and straightened their little bobs so they came out looking like two tiny middle-aged ladies 😂 Like yours, their haircuts looked much nicer with all the styling and “product” washed out!

SpikeGilesSandwich · 06/06/2025 18:51

Your actual hair looks way better than the first picture!

I think it’s hard to gauge opinions though when you’ve already done it, people tend to be kinder, like when you suggest a baby name while pregnant and people say it’s awful but when you present your baby already named, they will say, “That’s lovely!” about the same name. Confused

The first picture is nothing like how your hair looks OP, yours is much nicer x

and that might not be a unique or stylish or particularly flattering cut but it is a current one, thus, not dated. Which was the question.

In 20 years time perhaps a messy bun will be the ubiquitous 'dated' middle aged haircut. But it's not now.

I don't know why people are getting so offended that posters are answering the exact question they were asked....
I'd understand if OP had asked 'Is my haircut okay?' and people jumped in calling it dated. BUT SHE SPECIFICALLY ASKED!

Edited

Well funnily enough I see women with all sorts of hair cuts, and the cut pictured is hardly one that would stop traffic because it is so "dated" - in fact no-one would give it a second look because there is definitely more than one or two women sporting it.

However, I don't live in the UK, where it seems women are so desperate to seek approval that they all have to conform to one hair style for fear of looking "dated".

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 06/06/2025 23:34

What a load of nonsense, haircuts are as varied in the UK as anywhere else and the majority aren't at the cutting edge of style however this is the Style and Beauty board so obviously people who start threads here care about their appearance and a dated appearance is something that some prefer to avoid.

Now I've seen the new pictures I think it's lovely, it did need to be flattened down at the back.

AliBaliBee1234 · 06/06/2025 23:46

I personally think it always looks good and who cares when it was popular.

Would look ''more modern' with a wave or some texture through it if that's what you'd like.

OuterSpaceCadet · 07/06/2025 07:15

I don't love this kind of haircut but that's stemming from my own issues with ultra thick, wavy hair that would never submit to this kind of neatness....

That aside, the sheer misogyny (and classism and ageism) of posters repeating the Karen shit is mind blowing.

The first poster to mention it at least had the decency to name the term as sexist, but many subsequent posters just use it like the misogynists do.

This is a board for women. Can there not be one place where women just support each other? If we want misogyny we've got the whole of the rest of the internet/ world out there.
