Is this haircut dated?

Piptoodle · 04/06/2025 15:30

I‘ve just come out of the hairdressers. This isn’t me, but my hair looks exactly the same (just a bit darker).

I like how it looks from the front, but not the back/side.

Make me feel better about it?

In answer to your question, yes it’s a bit dated and has the negative connotations of being a ‘Karen’ hair cut. BUT have think about how you would style it to keep it looking current, I would try a side part with a lot of volume at the front the give you a bit of a swoosh at the front, get your round brush out and it will look very sleek and sophisticated. I’m 31 btw and considering going for the big chop, maybe I will now!

Lovely

dollyblue01 · 05/06/2025 22:07

I love it, so classy.

SonK · 05/06/2025 22:12

I think it looks really nice OP, I have very curly hair so could never achieve that look - so jealous : D

I always chuckle at threads like this. It's always younger people saying things are dated. People young enough not to have experienced fashions that come and go, then come again, then go again.... I'm early 50s and it makes me laugh when I see young people start to wear things that look really out of fashion to me, because I last wore them 35 years ago. And things like glasses....whoever thought that big Deirdre Barlow glasses would one day be a thing again? Or Farah Fawcett style bouncy 70s blow drys.

But there are some items of clothing, and hair cuts, that never date because they are always around in some way, and this haircut is one of them.

when I say it's dated I mean less that it looks like a hairstyle from 2024, more that it dates the wearer as someone in their late 40s-60s. Let's be honest how many 20 year olds would you see with that style?

I'm rolling my eyes at people saying 'It's a bob, how can it be in or out of fashion?'
That's like saying 'It's a pair of jeans, people have been wearing them for a hundred years, how can they be dated?'
You can have different colours, lengths, cuts and styles of jeans. Your average 70 year old won't be wearing the same pair as a 40 year old who probably won't be wearing the same style as an 18 year old. Exactly the same with "bobs" - OP's is in no way similar, to, say, Zendaya's cut.

Like I said, if OP is a middle aged woman there's nothing wrong with looking like one!

StampOnTheGround · 05/06/2025 22:18

In early 30s and agree with most of the others who are a similar age, it is dated and a ‘can I speak to your manager’ hairstyle. The ‘K’ name being what a lot would describe it as (personally hate that!).

If you’re happy OP that’s the main thing!

WhatDidIComeInThisRoomFor · 05/06/2025 22:26

Fuck me the “Karen” comments on this thread are something else.

The reason many “middle-aged” women have hair cuts like this is because peri menopause can be brutal for hair - you lose length (hair fall happens, and anything near shoulder-length gets straggly and thin) and volume. Try seeing your parting get wider and wider and find ways to cover that up - a shorter haircut like this one adds volume for one thing.

Go too short and you look old. Too long and it’s “witchy” or “mutton dressed as lamb”. Get a decent haircut that works with what you’ve got left and think it might give you a bit of confidence but no, it’s a “speak to the manager” do.

Give me strength, the way women tear each other down sometimes is bloody depressing.

2ndbestslayer · 05/06/2025 22:26

I'm late 40s and I think the style is a bit dated too. But I also don't think that matters if you're happy with it
As for people somehow having to justify their opinions by giving their own styles, why?
The op ASKED for opinions. As long as nobody is being a dick in the way they express their opinion it's fine for those opinions to vary.

2ndbestslayer · 05/06/2025 22:27

Oh and it's the graduated bit of the bob that dates it for me. Not the fact that it's a bob.

Skulling · 05/06/2025 22:29

The only dated thing here is the term “Karen”. The whole “can I speak to the manager” trope is pathetic — because heaven forfend a woman should dare to be assertive!

The haircut is fine OP — it’s not cutting-edge fashion but some people look great with a bob like that.

Picklechicken · 05/06/2025 22:32

I am 44 and I think it’s a bit dated. It’s sort of timeless and chic etc but personally I would go for a more blunt, one length bob to make it more up to date.

Todaywasbetter · 05/06/2025 22:41

i had that cut in my last job - i looked good - I left there in 2013

I am interested to know what hair styles the folks on here who say it's old fashioned have got.

The non-binary- mullet I expect. There are a lot of those about currently.

DoYouReally · 05/06/2025 22:47

I think it's dated but I still like it.

Me? A shaved head

k1233 · 05/06/2025 22:59

I get jealous of any sleek, polished look so think it looks nice. I'd never have hair that short myself but don't judge those who do. I can't say I go around dating the era of people's hair cuts. It looks tidy or it doesn't.

I also don't think age comes into it, apart from the naivety of youth thinking you have to be on trend all the time instead of finding your own style that suits and flatters you.

feelingfree17 · 05/06/2025 23:00

Beautiful 😍

Charlize43 · 05/06/2025 23:06

LittleSoo · 05/06/2025 18:45

I'm mid 30s and think it looks a bit like a Karen cut so I personally wouldn't go for this. If yours is darker though without the chunky highlights it probably looks nicer than the picture

I hate to say it, but that was my thought as well.

Without the streaks and with wave would be better, otherwise, for my tastes it looks quite contrived. I prefer something more natural looking.

ExpectoOff · 05/06/2025 23:17

Irritatediron · 05/06/2025 18:11

I'd be interested to know the age of everyone commenting either side of the argument. I'm in my early 20s, no one I know within a 5 year age range would have this hair cut due to the negative associations around the sexist "karen" archetype unfortunately. A few of my friends mums (mid- late 40s) have had this cut and liked it.

I’m late 20’s and same. I envisioned a dated cut before I opened the thread and this was pretty much what I had in my mind.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 05/06/2025 23:24

It's such a lovely cut. Shaped very well
i wish I could get my hair to hang like that!
it's Timeless and elegant.

They will all have long hair, whether it suits them or not, and whether they have the sort of hair which looks healthy and glossy or not, which they will wear in a ponytail or messy bun - and think they are the height of cutting edge fashion. Grin

how is it tearing someone down?
Nobody said 'it's a shit hairstyle and you/it looks awful'?

OP specifically asked 'is it a dated look' and people honestly answered.
Should we all lie and say 'No way, it's bang on trend, in fact Sabrina Carpenter has the exact same cut?'

If she'd asked 'I'm thinking of getting a full Kylie-in neighbours-perm/a blue rinse, do you think that's a bit dated?' should we all say 'Absolutely not.'

What if she'd had the 'Rachel Green,' and asked the same question, should we all just pretend that it's completely new and not an iconic 90s cut?

How about if she'd said 'The only smart outfit I've got is my old 80s suit, do you think I'd be okay to a job interview, will it look a bit dated or is it a classic?'
Ok to lie and go nope, no-one will notice those giant shoulder pads?

If you ask a specific question be prepared that some people might say yes!

grizzlyoldbear · 05/06/2025 23:39

I think with thick hair, you have to get a hair dresser who also has thick hair because hardly anyone knows how to cut it properly and it's like doing 2 haircuts. But I think this looks lovely OP.

NattyTurtle59 · 05/06/2025 23:35

and that might not be a unique or stylish or particularly flattering cut but it is a current one, thus, not dated. Which was the question.

In 20 years time perhaps a messy bun will be the ubiquitous 'dated' middle aged haircut. But it's not now.

I don't know why people are getting so offended that posters are answering the exact question they were asked....
I'd understand if OP had asked 'Is my haircut okay?' and people jumped in calling it dated. BUT SHE SPECIFICALLY ASKED!
