Is this haircut dated?

Piptoodle · 04/06/2025 15:30

I‘ve just come out of the hairdressers. This isn’t me, but my hair looks exactly the same (just a bit darker).

I like how it looks from the front, but not the back/side.

Make me feel better about it?

Bobs are having a revival, apparently, including the 'Posh' cut. I've had mine cut not quite like that but in a similar ball park and I'm pleased with it. And people with the 'Karen' nonsense can fuck right off as far as I'm concerned. It's vile, misogynistic and smacks of anti-working class sentiment too.

GirlOverboard123 · 05/06/2025 18:50

I’m mid-30s and honestly, yes it’s quite dated. It’s a ‘can I speak to the manager’ haircut.

ramonaquimby · 05/06/2025 18:51

I think it's dated
i prefer a same length just below the chin bob, much more classic

Nannyfannybanny · 05/06/2025 18:55

I agree, calling someone Karen is nasty!

That’s what I thought immediately! I’m surprised any hairdresser would agree to do this style because of the connotation being a K!

Thingamebobwotsit · 05/06/2025 18:59

It is lovely @Piptoodle

Karen comments? Agree they are misogynistic.

Short bobs generally aren't in fashion at the moment so I can understand why you might be concerned. But a well cut bob is a classic shape and timeless whatever is in fashion.

FWIW my hair looks awful with the current fashionable long drippy style, and takes an age to sort in a morning. Not everyone can / wants to carry it off. I working with variations on a theme mid length and just embracing the right cut for me.

If you like it and you can maintain it, it will be lovely. Plus do you really want to look like everyone else?

ShowOfHands · 05/06/2025 19:01

I fucking hate the Karen thing. A friend/colleague has this cut and the students we teach call her Karen behind her back. It's a vile, misogynistic term but endemic.

spoonbillstretford · 05/06/2025 19:02

Really nice. I hate the ones cut high up at the back (definitely "Can I speak to the manager?" haircuts) but yours is lovely.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 05/06/2025 19:03

I always chuckle at threads like this. It's always younger people saying things are dated. People young enough not to have experienced fashions that come and go, then come again, then go again.... I'm early 50s and it makes me laugh when I see young people start to wear things that look really out of fashion to me, because I last wore them 35 years ago. And things like glasses....whoever thought that big Deirdre Barlow glasses would one day be a thing again? Or Farah Fawcett style bouncy 70s blow drys.

But there are some items of clothing, and hair cuts, that never date because they are always around in some way, and this haircut is one of them.

Nannyfannybanny · 05/06/2025 19:07

I am interested to know what hair styles the folks on here who say it's old fashioned have got.

latetothefisting · 05/06/2025 19:08

Irritatediron · 05/06/2025 18:11

I'd be interested to know the age of everyone commenting either side of the argument. I'm in my early 20s, no one I know within a 5 year age range would have this hair cut due to the negative associations around the sexist "karen" archetype unfortunately. A few of my friends mums (mid- late 40s) have had this cut and liked it.

agree. I don't use the 'karen' term but in this context it's shorthand for a very ubiquitous 'type' of hairstyle which is primarily associated with middle aged women who aren't at the forefront of fashion.

I mean obviously if you are a middle aged woman (hardly a crime, particularly on MN) there's nothing wrong with having a hairstyle you like, but seeing as your q was whether it was a dated look rather than whether it looks good on you then, yes.

onetrickrockingpony · 05/06/2025 19:16

Mid-30s. It’s dated. And tbh I suspected what the cut would be before seeing the pic. It’s the graduated bit at the back which dates it. A single length bob would be classic and forever modern, but not the stacked effect.

Kelim · 05/06/2025 19:57

I think the blunt bob is more current, sorry. But it does look nice!

😂
I have a just longer than chin length bob all one length

PorgyandBess · 05/06/2025 20:00

From the thread title, I thought ‘I bet it’s a Karen cut’, but it’s not really like that.

Is it dated? Yes. Does that matter? No.

Late 30s and its not something I would pick, but its a classic hairstyle and not a bad one.

I'm late 30s and I have currently have long hair, but I am blessed with naturally thick hair. I had my hair cut off to a short bob around 15 years ago when it was very fashionable, but I hated it. Some people suit shorter hairstyles and look better, like everything though, its not just about the hair, but the overall look which makes someone 'dated'

ForFlakyHam · 05/06/2025 20:24

I'm mid to late 30s and would say that whilst it's a flattering cut, it's dated. I had this haircut when I was 18. My mum has it now. She's mid 60s. It's nice although I always think it's suits her better one length.

@Nannyfannybanny since you asked, my hair is fairly long, all one length bar some layers at the front and in desperate need of a chop!

soupyspoon · 05/06/2025 20:29

Its a bob. It cant be dated by definition as its been around for over 100 years

Different lengths and shapes for different tastes and faces.

Not sure what precision there can be in identifying a random photo as 'so 2004'

Victoria Beckham made the 'short at the back, long at the front' bob fashionable in the mid-noughties. Loads of people (including myself) had the cut. It was even nicknamed The Pob, as in Posh Spice - I remember going to the hairdressers with a picture of her. I think that's what a few of us associate this style with, hence why it feels dated as it was very much a trend.

ExtensivelyDecluttering · 05/06/2025 21:37

I think it's dated and I'm in my late 50s. I haven't seen anyone with this cut for years. That doesn't mean it can't be flattering and elegant though. For context I could never have this style as my hair is wavy/curly and at the moment I have it in a shoulder length tousled bob. Elegant I am not.

BCBird · 05/06/2025 21:39

It is lovely. I got hair envy. The bob is timeless.

MissSookieStackhouse · 05/06/2025 21:47

It’s a classic, timeless look. So many versions of this cut have been around since the 1920s and it never goes away because it looks smart and elegant. Some posters are saying it’s dated. Well it may not be the height of fashion at the moment (no idea what is) but it’s a classic in the way a cashmere jumper is, and always looks good.

librathroughandthrough · 05/06/2025 21:49

I’m 37 and it’s dated for me but happy for the op and I’m sure you look lovely @Piptoodle

manicpixieschemegirl · 05/06/2025 21:53

A hairstyle that’s known throughout the western world as ‘can I speak to your manager’ really cannot be considered timeless or classic, imo. It may suit you and you may like it, but that doesn’t make it any less dated.
