Unpopular opinion - Birkenstocks

MintChocCat · 30/05/2025 12:56

I know this is going to be an incredibly unpopular opinion and I’m going to be very alone with this view, but….

Am I the only person who doesn’t really like the Birkenstock sandals? I think the trend is for “Dad sandals” as I’ve seen someone refer to Chanel ones like this too. I’m just not a fan of the chunky look of them and prefer something more daintier I guess..

Appreviate no one is gonna agree with me 😂 I am aware they’re probs very comfy.

They are such a classic sandal. I remember trying to make them work for me years back but they are too clompy for my feet. As with DMs I think they are having another moment due to the trend for fugly sandals - some dainty ones look really off but ultimately it’s what works for you/your feet/your figure.

merrymelody · 01/06/2025 09:05

I thought they were the ugliest shoes ever until a friend made me try hers on. I loved them and immediately went out to buy my own. The only thing I don’t like is that I can’t run or climb in them.

OntheupsoIam · 01/06/2025 09:10

It’s not the style so much, it’s that they look smelly. You don’t want to get too near them, the way they’ve been sweated in so much, they’ve melted and moulded around someone’s foot…

MoistVonL · 01/06/2025 09:16

If you have Birkenstock-shaped feet they are the comfiest thing you’ll ever wear. I used to be able to walk 10-12 miles in them in a day on holiday and not have sore feet.

If you don’t, they are awful.

Yes, they are a chunky look but you don’t get that level of support in a dainty sandal. I’d rather be practical than stylish.

ExquisiteSocialSkills · 01/06/2025 09:19

I had some cheap dupes once which were far more flattering, the real ones look awful on me.

Muggytoday · 01/06/2025 09:22

I can’t wear them. They kill my feet.

Yes, I agree, it's shape of the foot. They are wrong for mine.

Aged about 7, I tried on a pair of Dr Scholls. They were just perfect. I wore them constantly until I was about 12. When I was 12 I had cloggy ones and also actual clogs. Until I was about 40 I wore leather ones as summer slippers.

I hope and pray they will come back.

They're hideously ugly things.

I agree and they are very uncomfortable for my feet.

MintChocCat · 01/06/2025 10:17

I like the look of fitflops and they look comfy too…

I wore clogs for 15 years until the company was sold and the new owners changed the shape of their shoes to ones that no longer suited me. I loved my clogs.

Twelftytwo · 01/06/2025 11:42

Each to their own! I think my narrow size 36 ones in rose gold look quite pretty and dainty 😁 but I suppose there is a chunkiness about them

LogicalBlodge · 01/06/2025 22:21

I think it's how you wear them - they can be quite a masculine sandal so with a floaty dress it's a great contrast. They also do different styles and colours.

Leather against floaty fabricy is also good.

notnowmrshudson · 02/06/2025 10:15

They're definitely dad sandals but they have different styles to choose from if that's not what you prefer. I think it's very versatile at the end of the day, I'm sure there are loads of celebrities you can look up who wear them if you want inspiration. Personally they're comfy and because they're so simple you can get away with styling it differently. Such a perfect casual, easy to wear shoe IMO. It simply isn't for you or is. To each their own. x

MrsKateColumbo · 02/06/2025 10:22

I don't even care how they look, they are the comfiest things ever, I have the winter clogs too. Way more supportive and comfy than trainers, im not good with soft soles. I really want the fur lined arizonas 🙈

I'm going to be buried in mine in case i need to do lots of walking in heaven...

TheCurious0range · 02/06/2025 10:24

I bought some because everyone raves about how comfortable they are, I've never worn a more uncomfortable sandal, they dug into my arch area, and I got sore patches on both feet.
I prefer saltwater or I have a couple of pairs I got from seasalt, really lightweight flexible sole and soft leather straps

MrsMitford3 · 02/06/2025 10:26

I wear big buckle gizehs.
I have been wearing birkenstocks for decades-so comfy-can walk in them forever-and often do!

Although I do agree with the noise they can make-I was walking through town squeaking and a very old man yelled across the road to me "you'll never make a spy" I laughed the whole way home...

VegQueen · 02/06/2025 10:28

I am not a dainty person and my feet are definitely not dainty (wide and flat). I wear Birkenstocks because they’re comfortable and I am very happy that lots of current trends are comfortable (like loose clothing too). If you don’t like them, there are a lot of other sandals available.

I’m a fan because they’re comfy and I’m all for women wearing footwear that is comfortable, over being hobbled by stupid heels, as they have been for precious decades.

I do agree they’re ugly though. Imo it matches the aesthetic for shapeless baggy oversized clothes that seems to predominate at the minute. It’s fab if you’re Hailey Beber or Kaia Gerber with ‘dainty’ limbs and little bird like features, but very unflattering for the general population. Is flattering what we are aiming for now though? Or should fashion reflect equality and feminist ideals?

LettingyougoMovingOn · 02/06/2025 13:32

Imagine if we all started threads on things we don't like....... so many
What do you like OP? Do you want some help choosing?

They’re ugly uncomfortable things and never fit me right. Plus make that fart noise when I walk.

I like the fart noise! 🤣

I got my first Birkenstocks a few weeks ago and love them. I find them comfortable and fairly stylish. I wouldn't be interested in "dainty" stuff. Couldn't be arsed with it and find it uncomfortable.

Justlurking10 · 02/06/2025 13:54

They may be ugly but my god my Birkenstocks are comfy. They do need a little bit of wearing in to soften the leather, but then they are like slippers.
They are the only thing that are comfy to wear abroad apart from trainers when my feet have swelled.

MangoBlink · 02/06/2025 14:37

Birkenstocks aren't the most beautiful but they are oh so comfortable. I love mine, I have a few pairs in different colours. Not because they are trendy but because they are comfortable x

Kreepture · 02/06/2025 14:38

When they're the only shoe that you can wear that makes your Plantar Fasciitis bearable to walk with, you won't care they're ugly.

If they’re comfortable I would embrace the fart noise myself 😂 they just don’t suit my feet. I definitely prioritise comfort.
