Unpopular opinion - Birkenstocks

I know this is going to be an incredibly unpopular opinion and I’m going to be very alone with this view, but….

Am I the only person who doesn’t really like the Birkenstock sandals? I think the trend is for “Dad sandals” as I’ve seen someone refer to Chanel ones like this too. I’m just not a fan of the chunky look of them and prefer something more daintier I guess..

Appreviate no one is gonna agree with me 😂 I am aware they’re probs very comfy.

I have been wearing Birkenstocks for about 20 years. They are the most comfortable to walk in and not give blisters

i wouldn’t by shoes by a trend, but by comfort

Same here, along with my Merrell walking shoes they are the most comfortable footwear I have. They come in so many lovely colours too, I have a job resisting them.

Caspianberg · 30/05/2025 13:42

@LoveItaly - I’m still on my first pair! They just never wear out and are a classic brown leather so they go with everything. Every year I think il treat myself to a new pair then end up not bothering as there’s always something else more urgent to buy.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 30/05/2025 13:57

I have a Pair of Tokio with the ankle strap.
i'm fussy about shoes as I am disabled but I love these.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 30/05/2025 14:01

Not an unpopular opinion - loads of people don't like them. I like them on other people, but they don't suit my feet.

stickygotstuck · 30/05/2025 14:10

They are ugly.
And overpriced.
I do like them.
I am unstylish, comfort is all I like.

They are one of those triumphs of marketing where fashionable people are bamboozled into thinking they look good.

But on the plus side, both the fashionistas and the unstylish can walk around in comfort👌

skippy67 · 30/05/2025 14:14

They're horrible!

Fourteenandahalf · 30/05/2025 14:18

I've had mine a year and they absolutely stink. Considering some people own them for 10 years plus, my feet are clearly some sort of toxic waste. Awful. I've had to buy more.

What are the sandals that everyone's wearing at the moment ? The ones with the wider strap across the front with the cut out shape on the sides ?

Lucky you for having dainty feet! 🙄 I don’t have dainty feet and very little choice of summer shoes - Birks are amazingly comfortable and fit my feet. 🤷‍♀️ But I don’t wear clothes for other people’s approval.

Tortielady · 30/05/2025 14:30

I really like the look of the sandals with the thick straps across the feet, but they wouldn't suit me. They put your toes on display and my toenails are an abomination before the Lord. It's not a cosmetic problem, it's the way they grow, so I prefer to keep them covered up. But I'm sure there are people with nice feet who can carry Birkenstocks without scaring the horses.

MoreChocPls · 30/05/2025 14:33

Got some, hate them as they squelch when I walk!!

SmokyWood · 30/05/2025 14:34

I love them and similarly my DM sandals - I’m a bit fat and I’ve got chunky legs so they balance me out a bit - I feel like a Weeble in anything ‘dainty’ 🤮

I don't get on with them. I found they rubbed the bottom of my feet and were way too harsh. My mum has a pair and loves them though.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 30/05/2025 14:50

Love my stocks 'n' socks.

PinkTonic · 30/05/2025 14:52

I have 4 pairs of Madrid big buckle and I love them and can walk miles in them. I also have slippers for winter. I don’t like all the styles but the ones I have I don’t consider ugly at all, they are my default summer footwear. I do have other dressy sandals to wear as needed.

RampantIvy · 30/05/2025 14:54

I have some incredibly comfortable Josef Siebel sandals. A thing of beauty they are not but in warm weather I can wear them all day.

I agree that Birkenstick sandals are ugly, but if people find them comfortable then so be it.

AcrossthePond55 · 30/05/2025 15:31

Horses for courses.

Looks aside, I tried them and they were extremely UNcomfortable. I'm sure it's just my weird feet but I couldn't stand them. DH loves them and swears by them.

If they'd been as comfy for me as they are for DH, I wouldn't have cared what they looked like. I'd have worn them no problem

Greenartywitch · 30/05/2025 16:34

I think they are hideous and overpriced and that no one ever looks good wearing them...

WellyMcLonglegs · 30/05/2025 16:46

I used to think the same until I saw a friend rocking a patent pair with lovely painted toenails. I own a few pairs myself now (and the Eva ones are fab for holiday!) though I personally prefer the one strap styles.

ScribbblyGum · 30/05/2025 16:54

Alas, my feet ain't never going to look dainty. Wait til you get fallen arches - then you'll love Birkenstocks!

aquadog · 30/05/2025 18:29

I love them so much, there's nothing more comfortable! And I also own and wear plenty of 'dainty' designer heels. They're practical and can be worn for years and years. I've been wearing them since I was a child, my Mum made me wear them and I thought they were hideous at the time - so I am pleased that they're now 'acceptable.' I have them in sandals and clogs!

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 30/05/2025 18:45

For those who say they're comfortable, do any of you have wide feet?

TheOliveFinch · 30/05/2025 18:54

I love wearing them but some styles are much fuglier than others and I tend to avoid as my feet are big enough already

ExtensiveDebating · 30/05/2025 19:02

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 30/05/2025 18:45

Yes, very wide and live in Birkenstocks, clogs in winter, sandals in summer. Walked 40k steps in 2 days in them earlier this week. They are not the most attractive footwear but for comfort and practicality they are hard to beat for me.

MidnightMeltdown · 30/05/2025 19:08

I don’t like them personally. There’s something about them that makes me cringe. I think it’s because they show too much toe for my liking, and most people have really ugly feet. Gives me the ick 🤢

Crushed23 · 30/05/2025 19:32

I love mine. Repurchased a pair of black leather Arizonas recently after 10 years. They’re very durable.

I also think they look great, but I know they divide opinion.
