Unpopular opinion - Birkenstocks

MintChocCat · 30/05/2025 12:56

I know this is going to be an incredibly unpopular opinion and I’m going to be very alone with this view, but….

Am I the only person who doesn’t really like the Birkenstock sandals? I think the trend is for “Dad sandals” as I’ve seen someone refer to Chanel ones like this too. I’m just not a fan of the chunky look of them and prefer something more daintier I guess..

Appreviate no one is gonna agree with me 😂 I am aware they’re probs very comfy.

I wore them for decades and loved the beatnik look of them in my youth. Only today I saw them in the middle aisle of Lidl and considered buying them again 30 years later!!

DazedAndConfused321 · 30/05/2025 19:50

They're so ugly and manly!

Overtheatlantic · 30/05/2025 19:55

I wish I could wear them but my foot isn’t made for them. Gabor Lanzarotes all the way.

Fgfgfg · 30/05/2025 19:58

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 30/05/2025 18:45

For those who say they're comfortable, do any of you have wide feet?

Shovels 😬
Wide birkies are great. Narrow ones hurt.

NicolaCasanova · 30/05/2025 19:59

They are so so comfortable but I’ve never been able to bring myself to buy a pair ad they are so, so ugly. Also dislike the lentil- weaving vibe from a brand owned by the richest man in the world!

Badh · 30/05/2025 20:02

Yes I agree although I do have a pair - they are very comfortable. I like my saltwater sandals the best. They are both neat and comfortable.

insaneinthebrainn · 30/05/2025 20:03

Agreed. There’s a school mum who wears them with baggy trousers and they just don’t look attractive to me! Same as crocs!

AnnParrot · 30/05/2025 20:11

I don't like a lot of Birkenstocks, and I can't walk in most of them anyway because I have weird feet. But Gizeh toe post Birkies are my absolute favourite, can never not have sandals. I've been wearing them for about 25 years now - I'm only on my third pair in all that time though, they have always lasted me really well.

I do own other sandals, but Gizehs are the most reliable and the best for long days on my feet.

I have narrow feet and they are too wide for me! If they are the right width then my toes hang over the end! I tried some of those clog-style ones and they looked lokebig flappy clown shoes on me. It's annoying, as I love them on other people! I bought some Doc Marten sandals instead, which are fab.

I've struggled to find a wide pair. A couple of years ago I bought a pair of standard size, wore them round the house for a day and was nearly crying with the pain!

TheOliveFinch · 30/05/2025 20:38

@AllProperTeaIsTheft have you tried the narrow fit ones , both me and my daughter have really narrow feet and they are fine, my feet are just very long but narrow

I’m with you. I think they are incredibly ugly and can’t understand the love for them. Same with crocs, fisherman’s sandals too.

thornbury · 31/05/2025 04:10

I live in the middle east where ground temperatures are hot enough to fry an egg every day at this time of year. I can't be doing with skimpy sandals that leave my feet too close to the ground, it's Birkies all the way for me.

Yes that's why they are comfortable, lovely and wide! About the only shoes I don't need to size up in for width

Caspianberg · 31/05/2025 05:16

I have the narrow gizehs. Fit great. My feet are narrow

ChocolateGanache · 31/05/2025 08:41

@Oblahdeeoblahdoe yes get the wide fit!

@AppleDumplingWithCustardyou don’t need to quote the op. We’ve all read it.

ChaToilLeam · 31/05/2025 08:46

I love my Birkies with the front strap - I have small, wide feet with a high arch and they are so very comfortable in summer. Dainty sandals kill my feet and look ridiculous on my peasant hooves anyway.

Glad I’m not the only one… I just couldn’t understand the appeal, but understand it now for some of the practical reasons listed.

I'm so drop dead gorgeous that I have to wear ugly Birkenstocks so that people don't hate me too much.

😂😂
i love them… sadly dog just ate one of my favourite pairs … never mind another 10 or so to fallback on !
i love them because they are comfortable and I love the slightly deeply look and they contrast well with more feminine dresses.

Comfort is the the real reason I wear them😄
I wear them with toe socks & toe separators to keep bunions at bay & keep my joints in proper alignment.
Another reason is that they feel like the antithesis of high heeled pointed shoes, which I dislike.

KnittedFerret · 31/05/2025 17:58

I don't think they're pretty but like others on here, I have been wearing them for decades.
I have Arizonas and Milanos.
When I first wore them, I got comments, mostly complimentary but the odd granny/toddler shoe remark.

I wear Crocs as slippers/backdoor/beach shoes and have done so for decades.

measureofmydreams · 01/06/2025 07:07

I love them been wearing them for nearly 20 years. This year I've bought a studded suede pair. The other three are metallic (one of which are wrecked and for the garden). I do have other sandals, but these match my style, suit my life and are my most worn.

Ginmonkeyagain · 01/06/2025 07:31

I wear birkenstocks all summer. I walk a lot and hate uncomfortable or painful feet.

I have size 8 H fit feet. Dainty shoes are not a thing in my world.

CaptBirdsEar · 01/06/2025 07:58

Can’t get on with Birkenstocks I wear Crocs Swiftwaters they’re so comfortable and easy to walk in.

Floisme · 01/06/2025 08:07

I like mine and don’t like pretty, dainty sandals. Feet look funny - own it.
