What do you do with the hourgksss? Is it like a bronzer?

It's multi-face. They usually have 2 blushes, a bronzer, highlighter and 2 finishing powders. Some have a slightly different combo I think - e.g they might include 2 highlighters and 1 finishing powder.

Good for travel and good for work or other times you might be in a bit of a rush. The powders have some sort of diffusing effect that is meant to seamlessly blend the rest of your make up together. They do work. Probably not as much as some people on social media would have you believe but I think they are good quality. Not a lot of pigment though if that's something you look for. They are subtle.

I only know all this because last year before deciding to spend the most on a palette I've ever spent in my life I spent quite a while reading comments and watching videos about Hourglass. 😂

@TragicMuse I've only tried the Trinny eye shadow so far (Wisdom - a lovely neutral everyday shade) and it's brilliant. Good but not heavy coverage and if it creases during the day you can just give it a little pat and it's good as new. I've ordered a Miracle Blur on Vinted to try - I don't normally use concealer-type stuff - and I'm interested to see how that goes. I'm also trying hard to resist the Liberty edit of her skincare.

I’m resisting so far! But I’m stalking Vinted for the things I really want.

TragicMuse · 29/06/2025 22:54

What I really need to know is how to stop my face being so shiny when I’m wearing SPF. The Goop super glow is very…glowy!
The Bondi Sands one is pretty shiny too.

I feel if I’m wearing it and going out I need to then wear foundation because my face is just a shiny shiny thing.

Any advice or tips? I prefer a matte finish but less of the shiny would do…

OvaHere · 29/06/2025 23:29

@TragicMuse I don't find the Beauty of Joseon one to be overly glowy.

TragicMuse · 29/06/2025 23:43

Thanks @OvaHere I’ll look that up!

Arrearing50 · 30/06/2025 07:09

I agree I love the hourglass palette - I never look at another blush or highlighter since I bought it and it does pull it al together.

hmmm I can’t think of a non glowy sunscreen…there are ones that say they’re matte?

Doubleraspberry · 30/06/2025 07:24

I’m afraid I just use spray sunscreen rather than an SPF product in the hot weather as my skin burns so easily I need the back up. But that at least is not glowy!

Doubleraspberry · 30/06/2025 07:27

The warm/cool discussion upthread reminds me… I have no idea what my skin tone is. Basically I got colour matched on a foundation in my early 20s and used nothing but that for two decades. It’s now no longer produced and I don’t really want to wear foundation any more because my skin is too old for it but it’s left me ignorant of exactly what sort of wider products I should be buying. Suggestions for where I could go to be told by someone with a good eye for it? I am pale as a pale thing but beyond that I’m lost.

OvaHere · 30/06/2025 08:37

@Doubleraspberry I don't think it's an exact science. Apparently whether veins in your wrist show as blueish indicates cool as does a pinky/red hue to your skin.

I mostly came to the conclusion that I lean neutral/cool with the realisation that peachy/coral/orangy browns don't actually suit me very much. Also the woman on the Hourglass counter when I bought a face tint agreed I'm neutral to cool.

OP posts:
Doubleraspberry · 30/06/2025 08:44

I think that would put me at cool (what other colour can veins show?!) and I do have to use the Hourglass palette very lightly so it would fit if it leans towards a warmer skin tone.

Green showing veins are supposed to lean more warm. Like I said though I don't think it's an exact science. 😁

I think the basic rule is green veins/yellowy skin undertone - warm and bluey/purple veins plus red pink skin undertone - cool. Neutral if perhaps you're not mega cool toned.

There is also a thing called cool olive which is people with deeper skin tones who are not automatically warm as assumed. There's lots of content about how make up brands rarely cater for them.

I worded it poorly - I don’t think there is a matte SPF, but I’d love it if there were! I’ll settle for less shiny!

Arrearing50 · 30/06/2025 09:17

That’s it - supergoop advertises a matte one

TragicMuse · 30/06/2025 09:33

Oh! Instant need!!

OvaHere · 30/06/2025 09:53

Has anyone tried their Skinsceuticals Vit C sample? I used mine yesterday for the first time and promptly spilled half of it on the dresser. I now have about one use left.

Not enough to tell me if it does anything good but it doesn't seem to irritate my skin at all, which I thought it might and I don't mind the hotdog water scent.

I quite like that it's watery rather than a serum as I don't love layering loads of serums on a morning. I'd be more likely to use something like the MediK8 serum on top of this which at the moment I only use at night.

The price of the full size puts me off. I've read that a lot of people rate Geek and Gorgeous which is a similar product so if I'm going to try a full size watery hotdog one that goes in the fridge I might go for that first.

I’ve had skinceuticals vit c and a few other products from them - I liked it, but medik8 stuff as good and better vfm imho.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 30/06/2025 10:49

@TragicMuse the Allies of Skin sunscreen that came in the recent Cult Beauty Flight Mode edit is relatively matte compared to some. I love it, wish it was bigger. You could check Vinted? I’ve got too many other sunscreens here to use up to justify buying a full size but I’m really liking it.

@OvaHere I can tell I’ll end up buying that Hourglass deer palette even though it’ll be my third 😳 Tbf though the others are 3-4 years old and I’ve already passed one on to DD. They are beautiful. The size of the mirror also makes them really useful if you’re staying somewhere with no good makeup-doing area.

TonerNeedsReplacing · 30/06/2025 10:49

@OvaHere - I have the Geek and Gorgeous vitamin c. Seems nice and not irritating but not used it for long so can’t say if making a difference. If buying direct from them they sell small empty bottles for it for I think £1.50 so you can decant some for daily use and keep rest in fridge so it remains good for longer.

I like quite a few of their products - I am prone to fungal acne and they have more products suitable for me (and labelled as such) than many brands. The Jelly Joker is my main water based cleaner now. A decent value brand for what you get.

OvaHere · 30/06/2025 10:58

@LemonJuiceFromConcentrate Don't tempt me. It's already on my mind even though it's not been released and I absolutely don't need it. All my words of advice about the palettes are really just me giving myself a talking to.😁

@TonerNeedsReplacing I've just finished a G&G retinal which I've enjoyed. I think I need to go up a strength if I purchase again. Not tried anything else as yet. I'd be interested in the cleanser as I like to use a really light one on a morning.

I’ve thought and thought. I have a whole HUGE basket of stuff, including 3 kinds of SPF!

I really need to get over myself and just use them up! So what if I’m shiny! Powder will sort that!

and when they’re done I’ll buy a matte one.

thanks for all the recs. I have a wish list for when I’m ready to buy.

tell you what though, I have sprung for some Trinny Take Back Time Elixir from Vinted. It’s not all parsimony and sensible choices here - I’m not a complete loon!

There's also a new Liberty kit. I got an email whilst at work but haven't had time to fully investigate yet.

I got a points voucher from them today so I might get this one.
