...now help me with shoes.

here's the dress it is FANTASTIC.

it's pretty late forties early fifties imo, i'm thinking that a small platform peeptoe sandal (not unlike my styleesh grandma used to wear) would be good.

if anyone else is ordering from uttam (although god knows what, i couldn't find a single other thing that didn't make me actively barf) there's a discount code for 10% off your first order. postage is free too, and it's next day delivery. i'm really impressed with the quality, it's LOVELY. skirt is lovely and full and the large patch pockets give it that strange post-war feel, iykwim? it's mad, i love it. AND IT IVES ME A WAIST!

no, because the uppers were made of two pieces of ruched leather that crossed over from teh front, the peeptoe was neat and small.

ok so in the interests of mumsnet, aitch and a lesbian wedding in winchester, I drove an hour and a half to london, went to a big branch of russell & bromley and tried on the peep toe wedges.
Colours - pink, bright blue, gold, tan, black, white, yellow and um possibly orange? The heel was good - wedge, slightly angled back towards the arch if you know what I mean, fine cork (not too "corky"), narrow, elegant heel. The colours were OK in a slightly 80s way (and therefore bang on trend), but when I put them on... I don't know, I didn't love them. The peep toe was actually quite big so I felt my big toe and second toe were trying to escape out, especially as the heel was quite high. I just didn't love them, so didn't buy them. Which is surprising, I thought I was a dead cert to get them. It may have been the fact that the nailpolish on my big toe was chipped and I just thought "eurgh!".
Anyway I was then sitting in a cafe and a woman walked by wearing them in the tan and they looked great, esp the heel, and I thought "oh poo".

But that is the way the cookie doth crumble, folks.

£79.99
I need to confess that I bought mine unseen so convinced am I that they are fabulous [hopeful]
Glad I did as they had practically sold out in bluewater of nearly every size in orange

AitchTwoCiao · 21/05/2008 10:38

am i nt going to like how high they are, though? i'm not brilliant at heels. [out of practice icon]

and pph... thankyou and bummer about yuor change of heart.

OP posts:
PrincessPeaHead · 21/05/2008 10:52

I didn't look, lap. If they were only 79.99 I def should have bought them. Ah well

Aitch they weren't madly high. High enough to be chic and to cause me to worry about toe seepage. But not so high that you couldn't stride out in them. Definitely not limo shoes.

I think if two perfectly manicured little toes had popped out I'd have been happier with them.

tallis, tallis... are you still around? might i get something good in roma, do you think?

i've just looked at the fausto santini collection, as i tend to get myself a wee treat from there when i'm in rome, but spring summer is pukeworthy. (weeeell, apart from one rather nice bag.) but i want shoes.

Tallis · 21/05/2008 18:58

Hello, si, certo, siamo qui. Sempre qui.

Well you could spend your entire week shoe-shopping in Rome if you wanted - everything here from geog teacher Geox/Campers to Louboutin [more dribbling]. Can always do a pph-style recce for you. BUt am slightly confused now - am I looking for silver glitterball spangletastic sandal style, kind of Nancy dell'Olio meets Marilyn MOnroe? Or something more fifties-ish, Nancy d'O meets Doris Day? You want wedge, but not cork? Do you therefore want wood-effect, or that slightly hay-like espadrille woven look? Or the wedge in same leather colour as the shoe? Smaller peep-toe rather than larger, ideally? And what was with the ruching? [confused emoticon] Or was that lapin?

Think silver a good idea, as goes with anything and saves you having to trawl round shops with dress scrunched up in bag.

AitchTwoCiao · 21/05/2008 20:21

yep, i'm also thinking silver, as my orange necklace is a bust anyway. i think i've made my piece with cork, but it's not my first choice. we'll have to see. if the via frattina can't help me, where else is good for cheaper shoes? down near the campo di fiori?

i've emailed the people to ask if they have a travel cot, by the way, but they don't seem to understand. un lettino per la bambina? that should have done the trick, shouldn't it? i can't believe it's next week and i've to double up my work and have nothing organised.

OP posts:
AitchTwoCiao · 21/05/2008 22:29

the 100% polyurethane would put me off. am shoe snob....

S1ur · 23/05/2008 16:06

Aitch I saw these today

Don't know if they've been linked to already.

But I saw them and thought of your Gran. They are lovely in the flesh actually. Quite delicate, the front has a small peep toe made by having one piece of white leather sort of looped over the main leather of the shoe.

Anyway, I'll stalk you mention it when I catch you about in case you aren't looking here now.

AitchTwoCiao · 23/05/2008 21:57

hmmm. i take you on your honour that they are nice in the flesh, because you'd have to say that by any standard they look shit onscreen. too low in the heel, too mumsy etc.
HOWEVER. i am a bit concerned about the heel thing, as teetering isn't my strong point, so i will deffo investigate, thanks, and if they're nice and delicate then they're on my list.

saw the russel and bromley ones, my store's not getting orange or yellow in (actually said yellow had gone in the sale already) but i will try them on when i get back from hols and will think strongly about the pink ones should i be able to walk on them. they did look... rather high.

Tallis · 26/05/2008 08:42

Sorry, Aitch - just seen your q about travel cots. Yes, lettino is the word (at least for a normal cot). There is another word for travel cot, but I just can't think of it . It will come to me later, but by then it will be too late for you - are you not tomorrow or did i imagine it. Are you actually coming today? ? It's not in my hopeless dictionary.

Our travel cot plus souped-up (clean) mattress available if you're stuck. Should I send you my email address via your blog in case you want either the cot or the hunnish Bug? I can saunter down with the gear, no sweat. Combine it with a trip to the exciting supermarket underneath Oviesse on viale trastevere. Oh the glamour.
