Got to go for work in a couple of weeks and will have some time to browse the mall. What is worth getting there, beauty wise? Make and/or skincare

TLDR but the excellent Anna Eleri Hart on Instagram has just done a Substack on exactly this. Really worth tracking it down.

Big tubs of pain relief, Advil pm in particular.

Just a “Heads Up”.

A few years ago we were driving back home to New Jersey after spending a few days in Montreal, Canada. My husband pulled into the services on the Interstate and whilst he went to get some food asked me if I could buy some painkillers as he thought he was developing a headache.

I bought some Advil PM. He laughed at me and said that I probably wouldn’t appreciate it if he fell asleep at the wheel……

I had no idea that Advil and Tylenol PM (or indeed any medication in the US which is labelled PM) is to help induce sleep! A bit like when you buy something like Sudafed or Lemsip tablets for heavy colds or flu and they have daytime and night time tablets in the same packet.

You need to buy the regular Advil or Tylenol if you want to stay awake!

Orville Redenbacher?

I've never had this, is it better? My supermarket only has one kind, and it burns so easily and randomly that it isn't worth it, but I would love a reliable microwave popcorn!

I see that there are lots of comments on Trader Joe’s here. I’ve relocated to the UK and I really miss Trader Joe’s and wish there was an equivalent store here (although the one in my town didn’t have the licence to sell alcohol)

Trader Joe’s is also popular for alcohol (in the stores which are allowed to sell it) as quality and prices would be on a par with what one typically pays in Aldi or Lidl.

I actually used to buy the fab British Coastal Cheddar in Trader Joe’s and Costco and since relocating to Dorset have discovered that it is made just 5 miles away from my home! Trader Joe’s sells niche food products from other countries which you can’t find in other supermarkets in the US. They even sell British crumpets. It’s a great place to pick up something for lunch too.

I do miss their salad dressings, especially a Cilantro (Coriander) one. Also their Island Soyaki - a soy teriyaki pineapple sauce with sesame seeds…used to pour it over chicken breasts and bake…so yummy!)

www.traderjoes.com (lists products and locations in each State).

You can also buy Naproxen.

You can actually try it here on boots as period pain reliever. I made the mistake of saying it was for my back though so they couldn’t sell me it. I’m going back and saying it’s for period pain though.

Systane eye drops

Ragamuffin8 · 08/05/2025 19:23

Jewellery from Quince, a lot are dupes of Mejuri, but cheaper - they don’t ship abroad.

Britpopbaby · 08/05/2025 19:31

Catrice makeup? Catrice seems to be mentioned by some of the beauty You Tubers I watch. Maybe find some recommendations from You Tube.

Indeed that is the case.

Neosporin (sp?) is indeed wonderful and we have nothing like it here. Drugstore own brands are fine and much cheaper.

Differin is adapalene and is OTC in America but prescription here. It is milder than tretinoin but a good introduction to the anti-acne/anti-aging category. I like it a lot.

Trader Joe’s - how I miss it! I hope you can find one, OP. Have a great trip

Rosierambles · 08/05/2025 20:57

I very briefly wondered if orange dictators was a type of crisp/ snack food 🤣

I would buy Sunday Riley’s “Good Genes” exfoliator - the US version has more lactic acid in it than the version sold in the UK and Europe (so it works better, basically).

Interesting. I had a uk bottle if that recently and didn’t think it did anything. I love some other products from the brand though. I just booked a US trip today so might get the US one to compare.

I am not sure that makes it sound any more palatable!

Is Melatonin good for jet lag?

Triple A antibiotic cream from Walgreens. Magical stuff.

Yes, the Boots period pain reliever is very useful to have in the cupboard. It’s like Feminax from years ago.

Big tubs of pain relief, Advil pm in particular.

I also get these and big tubs of paracetamol (acetaminophen it's called there).

@Isabelle70 melatonin is very good for jetlag. Don't buy a huge dose or you might sleep too deeply. I once ended up with pins and needles in my ear from sleeping on it.

I second a trip to Trader Joe's for snacks, Target just for browsing, and of course Sephora.

Chiropea · 09/05/2025 09:50

Random one but has anyone heard of Zymox pet ear drops? I think you can only get the the Zymox blue ear drops from the US (hydrocortisone).
