Am I nuts to have splurged on this?

Have loved this Self Portrait dress for a while and saw it went 25% off today. It was reduced to €390/£335. I have no formal enough occasion coming up this year for it but I’d love to save it for the next wedding or something appropriate. I’m trying to save a bit more at the moment (for nothing specific) so I can cover it if I dip in to those. There was 1 left in my size and I couldn’t resist. If it fits should I keep it? 😅

Understand the comments about where it could actually be worn. We do have a big church wedding in March 2027 so I think it would be a nice spring contender for that ☺️

Oh dear, I’m 26 lol!

Wait. What? You’re 26? 😬

Is Melania your icon? This dress is so, so odd. So conservative.

CountryQueen · 02/05/2025 09:24

Pmsl. This is a pisstake everyone. The March 2027 wedding too 🤣

Looks like something Kate would wear when she peels off the godawful brown skinnies. Hideous

WomenInSTEM · 02/05/2025 09:25

It's lovely, but I immediately thought of Melania Trump

MidnightMeltdown · 02/05/2025 09:28

I think a young person could pull this off better than an older person. You need to really think about where you would wear it though.

Maybe to the races or a summer wedding with a while top underneath? If you don’t have an occasion in mind then send it back.

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 02/05/2025 09:33

Where in the world are you, @Peppermintcreamz and might you be able to buy it from the UK website instead?

https://www.self-portrait.com/products/aw24-blue-tailored-taffeta-midi-dress?variant=45573571084507

Because given the dislike for the dress on this thread, it’s highly likely it will go into the sales with a much bigger discount after all the summer weddings.

I actually love it - it moves beautifully and is hardly likely to ‘go out of fashion’ in the next few years. Before seeing the video I might have suggested shortening to make it more wearable for someone in their 20’s - but now I can see that it’s a faithful rendering of a New Look silhouette and it’s the generosity with fabric that contributes to the price. In addition to the skilful cutting and finishing.

So, it depends … I had similar tastes at 26 (in terms of formality and extravagance) so entirely understand its appeal. If you would have to pay customs duties to import it from the UK that might negate any saving in the sales. On the other hand a 25% discount isn’t much, and it’s sure to be available elsewhere later on.

🤷‍♀️

Blessed be the fruit

mickandrorty · 02/05/2025 09:40

If you like it you like it, but I thought you were going to say you were at least 70, it is very mother of the bride/thatcher looking.

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 02/05/2025 09:43

And yes, I do also think it’s far better to have something lovely, ready and waiting in your wardrobe, than to find yourself on MN S&B two weeks before a major celebratory event, scrabbling around - with a refusal to shop anywhere but the shop down the road!

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 02/05/2025 06:37

The length does absolutely nothing for the model's calves. Makes them look huge and she obviously isn't. The midi length really needs to die soon.

It doesn’t make the model’s legs remotely big. The length is lovely.

Midi lengths are the most flattering for a number of us.

No way! It's very dull. But if you are young and beautiful you might be able to make it less dull?

CoastalCalm · 02/05/2025 09:49

Personally I find that skirt length really unflattering unless you have very slim legs and it feels a bit matronly for 26

Aizen · 02/05/2025 09:49

It's a Kate in a size 4 number for sure. The model even looks like her.

That says a lot about how I view the Kate style, oops.

brettsalanger · 02/05/2025 09:50

Where would you wear something like that ?

Best post so far. I would have loved that at age 26 for the same reasons- as you say it’s a faithful rendering of a New Look silhouette. I prefer the pink version and would wear the pink.

I don't understand the vitriol this dress is getting. I would like to know if the skirt and jacket part can be separated. I've seen similar Self Portrait dresses in Harvey Nicks and the skirt hooked on to the jacket but wasn't stitched on.

I think that would be lovely for a wedding! Practical because it’s unlikely to be boiling Hot in March. I hope it fits when it arrives.

I know everyone is different, and we all have different styles and tastes so I hope this thread hasn’t taken the shine off something you were really looking forward to buying. I’m a big believer in buying things that you love even if you don’t have an occasion to wear them (providing you can afford it.)because Sod’s Law says that an occasion will come up and you won’t be able to find it again or anything else which you love quite as much. I still think about a pair of shoes that I didn’t buy a couple of years ago and since could’ve worn them several times over to various different events.

Enjoy the unboxing! SP clothing is beautifully packaged 🥰

Moveoverdarlin · 02/05/2025 09:57

The wedding would need to be incredibly formal / high society to get away with that.

It’s the sort of thing Sophie Wessex would wear to a Royal wedding. Very conservative, very formal. I’m 46 and wouldn’t be seen dead in it. I don’t think my Mum would either. Maybe Mary Berry, maybe Camilla, or Judy Dench. Mmmm maybe I would wear it on a cold spring day to collect my OBE.

It’s a spring / summer colour, but very covered up. So you couldn’t wear it to a wedding on a hot day, well I suppose you would have to if it were a state occasion and needed to cover up - which is why everyone keeps coming back to the Royal thing.

peachescariad · 02/05/2025 09:58

Awful.....looks like something the queen would of worn in The Crown back in the 50s.
I'm 59 and have never, or never will wear anything like that!

TokyoSushi · 01/05/2025 21:37

Are you in the royal family? If not, send it back! 😃

Was just going to say, it's giving K-Middy 😆

But far less sexy!

Agree on Midi length, and don't even get me started on cropped jeans/trousers..

BumbleBeegu · 02/05/2025 07:08

I can’t even imagine where you’d wear that OP. You’re 26…and it’s a frumpy (expensive!) shapeless dress. I’m 60 and even I wouldn’t wear it 🥴

How on earth can it be described as "shapeless"? There are some very odd comments on this thread.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 02/05/2025 10:04

It looks like what Maria what would worn once she bagged the Captain and became an official Von Trapp.
