Am I nuts to have splurged on this?

Have loved this Self Portrait dress for a while and saw it went 25% off today. It was reduced to €390/£335. I have no formal enough occasion coming up this year for it but I’d love to save it for the next wedding or something appropriate. I’m trying to save a bit more at the moment (for nothing specific) so I can cover it if I dip in to those. There was 1 left in my size and I couldn’t resist. If it fits should I keep it? 😅

I absolutely love the jacket of the Sister Jane suit linked but, oh my, that skirt is unforgiving on the hips.

Disagree! Nobody's going to know if that's just the pleats or you're filling it out yourself 😁

Appleblum · 02/05/2025 02:36

It's really nice! Love a self portrait.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 02/05/2025 04:36

I wouldn’t wear it and I’m 60. To me, it looks like a mother of the bride outfit
Personal taste of course, but at 26, wouldn’t you prefer something more lively?

Cantbelieveit888 · 02/05/2025 05:15

Isn’t that a bit lamb dressed as mutton?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 02/05/2025 05:22

It’s giving Princess of Wales at a society wedding vibes.

Get some teeteringly high nude heels and a little pillbox hat and you’re good to go.

isthismylifenow · 02/05/2025 06:09

You would have to see how you feel about it when you have tried it on.

Then be honest and see what other items you may have which are also quite formal and haven't had a chance to be worn yet. If you have other outfits also just waiting for an occasion, ask yourself when this dress would be likely to be used.

Yes it could be a buy for life item, but you are 26 so in say, 5/10 years there is a chance this may not fit you anymore.

If you absolutely do love it and want to keep it, wear it more often than just keeping for some occasion you don't even have yet.

Init4thecatz · 02/05/2025 06:27

Just don't gain wait between now and the event ten years into the future that's nice enough to wear this to.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 02/05/2025 06:37

The length does absolutely nothing for the model's calves. Makes them look huge and she obviously isn't. The midi length really needs to die soon.

RaraRachael · 02/05/2025 06:39

Never heard of Self Portrait but I've no great interest in fashion.
I could see a member of the Royal Family wearing it as PPs have said.
Very expensive and frumpy for 26 but it's your money.

IsItTheBlackOneOrTheRedOne · 02/05/2025 06:39

I can’t imagine what shoes would go with this. The ones the model is wearing look horrible!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 02/05/2025 06:41

Without commenting on the dress itself, I have on occasion splurged on things I absolutely loved, without being able to think of on occasion where I would wear them.

The most expensive pair of shoes I have ever bought was a pair of yellow gold silk stilettos. I adored them, but they don't go with any clothes I own and they are very uncomfortable to wear. Unsurprisingly they have gathered dust in my wardrobe and haven't seen the outside world that much. I think I wore them once when I went to a restaurant to celebrate my wedding anniversary and we got a taxi there and back.

In my experience if you don't know when you would wear it you probably won't.

Mumofyellows · 02/05/2025 06:44

For me, it's giving Serena and the other wives in Handmaids Tale vibes...I wouldn't wear it, I don't know what kind of occasion it would work for, very formal.
That said, if you love it and it makes you feel good then you should absolutely keep it, as long as you have an event to wear it to!

Somethingthecatdraggedin7 · 02/05/2025 06:47

I think it is lovely. Reminds me of something Grace Kelly would have worn.
You would have kicked yourself forever more if you hadn’t bought it.

User5274959 · 02/05/2025 06:59

The problem is for a summer wedding it might be too hot and if it's all in one everyone would be wondering why you don't take your jacket off!

But for a winter wedding the colour is too summery

BumbleBeegu · 02/05/2025 07:08

I can’t even imagine where you’d wear that OP. You’re 26…and it’s a frumpy (expensive!) shapeless dress. I’m 60 and even I wouldn’t wear it 🥴

Rattai · 02/05/2025 07:45

This just reminds me of Maggie Thatcher...sorry.
But of you love it that's all that matters

Cadenza12 · 02/05/2025 07:51

It doesn't seem like you can afford it if you are diving into savings. Return it

emmatherhino · 02/05/2025 07:54

It's not my cup of tea but it's really pretty, the colour is lovely and if you like it, go for it!!

BitOutOfPractice · 02/05/2025 07:54

I personally think that’s a very difficult length skirt. It doesn’t even flatter that obviously slim model.

it does give off royal vibes which is not my thing at all.

But if you life it op, go for it.

MrsPlantagenet · 02/05/2025 07:57

Um. I can’t see anything nice about it.

Keepthecat · 02/05/2025 08:00

If you think it's fabulous and you are prepared to forgo other things to have it, then you should keep it. But if you want an.honest opinion, it doesn't look like £335-worth to me and I can't think of when a normal person would wear this. But everyone's taste is unique!

Dogalabasta · 02/05/2025 08:08

I love the colour. I imagine Melania Trump would look fabulous in it. However I can’t think of anyone I know in real life who could carry it off, but if you can then why not!

No it doesn't. .

Isn't it lovely? The Baum und Pferdgarten and Sister Jane suits are same ball park but I agree more life to them, less timid.

Sister Jane is one of my favourite brands 😊I do like that pink suit but there’s just something about the skirt that’s putting me off!

It’s beautiful. If you like it and can afford it, buy it and enjoy
