Am I nuts to have splurged on this?

Have loved this Self Portrait dress for a while and saw it went 25% off today. It was reduced to €390/£335. I have no formal enough occasion coming up this year for it but I’d love to save it for the next wedding or something appropriate. I’m trying to save a bit more at the moment (for nothing specific) so I can cover it if I dip in to those. There was 1 left in my size and I couldn’t resist. If it fits should I keep it? 😅

Well it sort of is because it’s so vastly different to what most 26 year olds are wearing. Not extreme as such but…just a huge differentiator.

What do most 26 year olds wear?

ICanTellYouMissMe · 02/05/2025 11:56

To a wedding? Some dress off of ASOS or similar.

IridaceaeFloribunda · 02/05/2025 11:59

It’s giving Mary Poppins and not because it’s practically perfect in every way.

So every 26 year old should do that should they or be pilloried as being "extreme"?

So many posters on here are so conservative in their tastes. And I don't mean "conservative" as in "not revealing" but "conservative" as in having to follow the crowd.

Awful.....looks like something the queen would of worn in The Crown back in the 50s.
I'm 59 and have never, or never will wear anything like that!

I find it interesting that it’s usually older people on these S&B threads that rush to say that something is ‘old fashioned’ and ‘frumpy’.

I’m not sure whether this is because they are imaging the item on themselves, or because they remember older people wearing similar things decades ago.

I think it’s easy to forget that younger people won’t have these memories, and so things that older people consider ‘frumpy and dated’ can be fresh, novel, and different to younger people.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 02/05/2025 13:08

Oh fgs @IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle nowhere did I say the word ‘should’. I was observing an obvious truth.

Can we have one thread on here these days where someone doesn’t try and fail to parse previous posts to be pissy and cause an argument 😴

Well you're the one who seems to be astonished by the idea that one 26 year old might not want to follow the crowd.

There's a comment on this thread about it being something that Maria von Trapp would wear which made me laugh because there was a thread about a dress that actually did look like something she wore. Hint. The dress in question wasn't anything remotely like the pale blue Self Portrait dress.

(It was a drab brown colour with tiers, Thankfully, the owner sold it on).

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/05/2025 13:15

PS. Love the Sister Jane two piece linked to upthread, it's an updating of the Marc Jacobs ode to Chanel suits he did in the early 2000s.

wrongthinker · 02/05/2025 13:16

Not my style, but definitely very stylish.

As for where you'd wear it - supermarket? Stroll around town? Who cares? If you love it and it makes you feel good, wear it everywhere.

Glitchymn1 · 02/05/2025 13:18

I don’t like it, definitely royal family vibes. But I don’t have to wear it- you do.

The Maria von Trapp comment is ridiculous , as you say this outfit bears no resemblance to what she wore. If any movie character was going to be referred to it would be Grace Kelly, in well just about any film.

I didn't know that. I love Sister Jane. I've only got one dress which I love to bits but just looking at their website is such fun.

Purplecatshopaholic · 02/05/2025 13:21

If you love it that’s the main thing. Dont let us internet randoms put you off, lol. I hope it suits you, and you enjoy it. I wouldn’t wear it, the style is way too conservative mp/elderly royal for me, but thank god we are all different! It’s a beautiful colour.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/05/2025 13:21

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle Yes, It wouldn't look out of place on Lisa Fremont (Grace Kelly in Rear Window).

Always admire Sister Jane on others. The suit is one of the first things I've seen of theirs I could see myself in.

It's also very much something I could see Simone Rocha designing if she was at Chanel.

ICanTellYouMissMe · 02/05/2025 13:30

Have no emotion about it at all, just engaging in a conversation, which is the reason for this entire website’s existence 🤷‍♀️

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 02/05/2025 10:51

Um, yes and what is wrong with referencing that? 1950s tailored suits were fabulous.

I would love to wear the skirt suits Doris Day used to wear, along with her pill box hats. Gorgeous.

Justfreedom · 02/05/2025 13:43

Op if you like it and want it and can afford it go for it why not.

WednesdaysChild25 · 02/05/2025 13:43

I’m 51 and wouldn’t wear it, it’s frumpy in my opinion and the skirt length is odd. Not keen on the colour either. Sorry OP

YetiRosetti · 02/05/2025 13:45

I think it’s a very classy outfit OP - but I would say dipping into savings to buy an item of clothing that you have nowhere in mind to wear isn’t usually a good idea. If it genuinely makes you feel wonderful in a way a cheaper outfit wouldn’t then go for it - life is short after all - but don’t spend savings on it unless you really really really love it

HideousKinky · 02/05/2025 13:46

It reminds me of Margaret Thatcher's clothes choices

Sunholidays · 02/05/2025 13:47

It’s lovely. Very classy.

I don’t think it’s frumpy at all. It’s definitely less frumpy than most brands that are often recommended here.

CiaoMeow · 02/05/2025 13:49

Be honest, OP - is it a fantasy life purchase or something you can actually see yourself wearing in your real life?
