Am I nuts to have splurged on this?

Have loved this Self Portrait dress for a while and saw it went 25% off today. It was reduced to €390/£335. I have no formal enough occasion coming up this year for it but I’d love to save it for the next wedding or something appropriate. I’m trying to save a bit more at the moment (for nothing specific) so I can cover it if I dip in to those. There was 1 left in my size and I couldn’t resist. If it fits should I keep it? 😅

It absolutely doesn't 'drown' you OP. Far from it. It suits you perfectly.

I like people that have their own style. Its a good price for something that isn't the typical wedding guest look.

Nothing to do with words. I don't see anything in the photos which
was shapeless and swamped you.

Fine, disagree, not sure what else you want me to say!? It’s subjective innit.

Sorry, unless you’re over 50, it’s very old fashioned.

Not sure what you're implying putting over 50 & old fashioned in the same sentence 🤔 I think its a classic design which is stylish for any age.

IDontHateRainbows · 07/05/2025 20:33

Mary Poppins called, she'd like the dress back.

This designer does a lot of very similar silhouettes to the OP's dress and I think her stuff is fab.

Princess Kate wears a lot of Eponine. It's gorgeous stuff. There were several Eponine dresses at Megan and Harry's wedding. I have 4 ready to wear Eponine dresses and looking back at the Instagram photos I'm deeply regretting not buying more. They only do couture now and it's way beyond my price range.

@AFrolicOfMyOwn @Mercurial123 Update 2.0…I actually got a very good deal on the version without buttons so I ordered and sized up! I find the fit much nicer. Paired with a brooch for good measure 😉Will keep this one and return the jewel button one.

What matters is you love it and it’ll get use. It’s a real confidence boost to have a go to outfit that you love

AFrolicOfMyOwn · 08/05/2025 20:23

Oh wow - that is good news! Version 2.0 looks excellent on you.

Two, no, three things that occur to me (which you can of course ignore, but …):

  1. Sleeves. I can never forget how Judy Finnigan, in her This Morning days, always appeared in suits with Far Too Long sleeves. And I used to wonder why not one of the wardrobe people in an entire TV station had ever offered to help with it. You may feel they look more contemporary full length (rather than the Platonic bracelet length) but that would be at your wristbone, not your fingers.

  2. Is the skirt lined? If not it could do with a slip beneath, to help the fabric move more freely and to lessen crumpling. (Although a bit of crumpling is part of the romance of taffeta!)

  3. If it were me I’d be looking for some extravagantly scaled flatform sandals or square toed sling backs with clumpy heels and a platform. I’d want something unladylike to balance the sugariness of the dress. Dainty, pointy, stilettos would be just too much.

(You’ll have to forgive me for being ridiculously excited on your behalf. It takes me right back to a pale grey tweed hourglass shaped suit I bought from Dorothy Perkins when I was 17 … I hope you’ll have a fabulous time wearing it, whenever and wherever.)

Youbutterbelieve · 08/05/2025 21:21

You look fantastic in it!

Darksideofvebus · 08/05/2025 21:24

You look absolutely gorgeous!!

BitOutOfPractice · 08/05/2025 21:37

You look lovely op. But for that money…those side seams! 😱 The finish on that suit is not great!

I agree about the finish, especially on the seams but maybe it looks better in real life or it might need to be hung for a while. This one also looks better than the last one where the seams were wavy.

This one is a much better fit though and looks lovely on OP.

BitOutOfPractice · 08/05/2025 22:16

I just bought a linen trouser suit from primark that looks as well made as that op. The second one is better but not much. For that money I would send it back.

You would look great in anything though op.

Thank you, and oh no please don’t apologise for the excitement I’m the exact same lol! I shall definitely bring it to my seamstress for the sleeves and can pop a slip underneath. As for the shoes, you’ll have to pry a closed toe court heel out of my cold, dead hands 😁

@IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle I have an Eponine dress I bought a few years ago and I'm planning to have one made for some events next year. I'll let you know how it goes! A lot of her silhouettes are very new look.

WhatdoesitmeanKeith · 09/05/2025 10:14

@Peppermintcreamz check out the Princess of Wales’ dress from last night!

For what it’s worth, I love Self Portrait. Only have one of their dresses, and it’s a different style, although the same length is yours. I feel fabulous in it. The one you have is a very particular style, perhaps some on this thread do not quite “get it”. I would use the fact that you are early twenties to wear whatever you like!

Aww you look lovely! Glad you are having enjoyment despite some of the comments - I thought I'd stumbled into AIBU😂

FWIW when I was at Uni I used to have pictures of Escada pencil skirt suits saved from Vogue and vowed that I would climb the corporate ladder and be able to afford such finery. Absolutely not the norm for my age group at the time given that Grunge was a thing back then. Sadly by the time I'd done well enough to be able to afford them, the brand was pretty much defunct in the UK and this was before internet shopping was a thing. So embrace your Princess Kate and wear whatever sparks joy in your life. I actually came onto the thread to see if anyone had spotted Kate's SP outfit yesterday - she looked radiant.

Peppermintcreamz · 09/05/2025 10:47

Thanks @Netaporter 🥰 Just saw her dress on Insta and love it. Ahh I do love a good pencil skirt. If perchance you’re still on the hunt for one, I nabbed a lovely pink one in the LK Bennett sale last year and think it’s a great piece! They had a black version as well which is probably more versatile but I live for colour 😅
