Why do women wear tankinis?

They make everyone look bad, yet half the women at the pool were wearing them today. One woman, slim, tall, great legs, good arms, would be amazing in a swimsuit...but had a pot belly, flat chest and some livid stretchmarks, all framed, exaggerated and highlighted by her tankini. Horrible, unflattering garment. Obviously people can wear what they like, but they aren't more comfy than a swimsuit and who over 22 really thinks the slice of their belly above their pants is really the best part of their body?

its easier to go for a wee?

its the only reason I let my dd wear one for lessons

moondog · 17/05/2008 22:16

I agree. Nasty things.
Also makes you look like you are in vest and knickers nad forgot to undress in changing room.

TurkeyLurkey · 17/05/2008 22:17

I wore one when preggers. Am I let off the hook?

cmotdibbler · 17/05/2008 22:18

My tankini doesn't reveal any part of my midriff, and I like it because the long top disguises my tummy really well, and its got shorts, so no ladygardening required to go swimming.

what cmotdibbler said

the shorts on mine act like v effective control pants!

Vivace · 17/05/2008 22:21

I hope nobody today was planning a waterbirth in that particular pool!
I honestly don't think they are ever flattering to be honest. One woman had a sort of ruched vest on and I thought at first glance she had something terribly wrong with her!

I'm not skinny or perfect of body myself, by the way. I'd say most of the women in tankinis were thinner than me, but they made their bodies look weird.

Funkier and comfier than a swimsuit. Less revealing than either a swimsuit or a bikini. No contest. I think I look quite good in my tankini, and I like the fact that it looks like a vest and shorts - that suits me fine.

PrettyCandles · 17/05/2008 22:25

Because at certain times of the year it can be difficult to get a one-piece if you have a long body. That's the only reason I wear one. But then I get mine from Evans, because they have high-waisted bottoms so avoid the unsightly gap.

Twinklemegan · 17/05/2008 22:28

Incidentally, I'm not out to show off my figure (and it's an OK size 10 figure). Wearing any kind of swimsuit is a necessary evil for me to take my DS swimming and that's all. I don't particularly care what people think. I hate swimwear with a passion!

morocco · 17/05/2008 22:28

mine looks fab on me, thank you v much

I'm too tall for swimsuits

gorgeous though I am with no stretch marks and reasonable tummy, there is no way I'm wearing a bikini

I have mahoosive knockers but smaller waist/bum so I get to buy the 2 different parts of it in 2 different sizes

and there we go, why my tankini is fab and sexy.

DontCallMeBaby · 17/05/2008 22:29

Wot cmotdibbler and Caz10 said - my cleavage is a much better feature than my thighs, so if I could get a low necklined, underwired cossie with low-cut legs, I would, but I can't so tankini it is.

Mind you, the default catalogue photo for mine (Panache Illusion) shows the tankini top with tiny bikini bottoms, and it looks really weird, like a thermal vest combined with sexy knickers. I have the shorts!

Mercy · 17/05/2008 22:31

Don't know, don't care.

I suppose it's easier to go for a wee (if you are in a pool situation)

Kitsilano · 17/05/2008 22:31

I have a long body and swimsuits ride up sometimes. tankinis seem to fit better and are more flattering for my body.

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 17/05/2008 22:33

I am tall and long in the body, so if I wear a costume I spend a lot of time retrieving it from my arse crack - not a good look.

misdee · 17/05/2008 22:34

can i wear one because i am pregnant?

does that excuse me?

because I have size 8 ass and hips and porn star mega tits.
tankini allows that I can splash with my kids.
ps am not porn star...
at all

PrettyCandles · 17/05/2008 22:39

No, because at best it falls off your shoulders, at worst it bags horribly elsewhere as well.

I wear one to cover my stretch marks. Tankinis sit much nicer than one pieces.

pinkyminky · 17/05/2008 23:01

I like tankinis. They are great if you have a decent sized cleavage as they have secret support. I had a good, flat tummy and narrow waist when I wasn't pregnant and tankini looked fab, esp. with sarong. I have no stretchmarks so far, and hope to wear non maternity tankinis again. I also like the slightly 'non-swimwear' look of them.
Hate swimsuits and have a terrible habit of falling out of bikinis in the sea.

nappyaddict · 17/05/2008 23:50

also boy shorts make your arse look HUGE!

pinkyminky · 18/05/2008 00:04

Don't wear 'boy shorts' but have to say, I've seen some interesting figures in swimming costumes/bikinis!
