Why do women wear tankinis?

They make everyone look bad, yet half the women at the pool were wearing them today. One woman, slim, tall, great legs, good arms, would be amazing in a swimsuit...but had a pot belly, flat chest and some livid stretchmarks, all framed, exaggerated and highlighted by her tankini. Horrible, unflattering garment. Obviously people can wear what they like, but they aren't more comfy than a swimsuit and who over 22 really thinks the slice of their belly above their pants is really the best part of their body?

i want a tankini that's got a long top that's not too expensive cos i won't wear it much. any ideas? all the ones i have have a one inch gap between the top and the bottoms and then they ride up anyway when i'm in the water so i might aswell be wearing a bikini.

swimming costume can distort boobage in foul ways

totalmisfit · 20/05/2008 08:36

the only thing which will settle this debate is the first ever MN swimsuit competition. And i will not be participating.

they look awful on me normally (large norks, small waist, big hips) but they are VERY good when pg. Maternity swimming cossies are awful, bagging round everywhere. Tankinis much better (and bikinis would scare me).

I think mine looks better on me - anything that gets me to the point of getting over my selfocnsciousness enough to take dd swimming, which she loves, is a good thing in my book (wear a size 12ish, bit of a tummy, but most of the issues are in my mind rather than physical!)

My tankini arrived.

I am very impressed. It is comfortable and supports my enormous norks - the first time ever in swimwear

Has a built in bra. A bit complicated to put on but once only

Can you tell I am pleased with it.

I have a long body, round belly and small boobs, so a one-piece is unflattering and more important, very uncomfortable. I’d feel weird doing proper fitness swimming in a bikini. And boy-leg shorts are essential in the last week before a bikini wax. So a shorts and tankini top combo is perfect.

Versatility! Depending in where you are, you can opt for:

the one piece look (pool);

the bare midriff look (almost bikini - certain beaches) or;

just wear the bottoms and go for the topless look (other beaches).

Fooled again! Just noticed the 11 years old bit. Doh!

The reasons are still the same though.

Splodgetastic · 06/12/2019 07:21

They are handy because you can wear them like bra and pants under your clothes on the way to the pool and because they usually come with boy shorts which minimises the grooming required to go swimming regularly.

I've been wearing rankings for year. I have a flat stomach and in pretty good shape but I'm super pale and prefer to be covered up. I don't sunbathe but swim, paddle board etc so a tanking works for me. I have no interest in what other people wear on the beach I'm there to de-stress and relax.

Easier to get off when visiting the loo!
