Why do women wear tankinis?

They make everyone look bad, yet half the women at the pool were wearing them today. One woman, slim, tall, great legs, good arms, would be amazing in a swimsuit...but had a pot belly, flat chest and some livid stretchmarks, all framed, exaggerated and highlighted by her tankini. Horrible, unflattering garment. Obviously people can wear what they like, but they aren't more comfy than a swimsuit and who over 22 really thinks the slice of their belly above their pants is really the best part of their body?

I've never cared what my arse looks like - it's a happy quality, I think, I may care too much what the rest of me looks like, but I never have to see my arse*, so I don't care. Just so long as it doesn't have a Peppa Pig sticker on it or something, I can live with it.

  • unless someone takes my photo from behind, in which case I have them shot, naturally.

I think you have to get a decent fitting one. I had a great one from speedo but also bought one from M and S (panic buy) that looked awful. Boy shorts result in the dreaded camel's hoof effect - be warned.

i like them. i too have big boobs and small hips and end up looking like a fecking playmate in a bikni, i also like the fact that they cover quite a bit up. my scars from my cs and my laproscopy and laparotomy are visible over bikini bottoms and at least with tankinis i can hide them.

cece · 18/05/2008 09:19

Oh dear I have just ordered one from figleaves this morning. Mainly due to my HH [.] [.] as it has underwired hiden bra style fitting inside the top. Plus have ordered high leg pants to go with the top - they have a control panel for my tum and I definitely need it.

I have ordered it in the vain hope that I might be comfortable in it. Not nice having norks squashed down by a all in one all day, and I am definitely not bikini material anymore.

So have a made a grave error? At least it is free returns!

cornsilk · 18/05/2008 09:22

No - tankinis like that are good. It's the ones with no support that look sloppy.

Nbg · 18/05/2008 09:22

I wore them on my holiday last week because, one I think swimming costumes are for children and the elderly and secondly because I had my 3rd child 5 months ago so I wanted to hide my stretch marks and the rest of my jelly belly.

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 09:41

ones with a gap between knicker and top are FOUL on me.
i hold a glimmer of hope that theres one or two out there that are long enough of top to cover the gap, but be roll-uppable when laying down to catch some rays on the tum.

widgypog · 18/05/2008 09:45

I am short and size 10 but look horrid in a swimsuit. There is no support for post baby boobies in a swimsuit and I like to have as much covered up as possible and a tankini in shorts does this. i actually find swimsuit and bikini pants which cut across my bum make it look bigger..so there!!!

What should I wear for a camping holiday in France then? Bearing in mind I'll be tearing about keeping track of my ds's.

SheikYerbouti · 18/05/2008 09:51

I lokk shit in all swimwear.

However, the tankini I have is the least horrific of ant garment I have tried, and I have tried tham all.

Plus, although I am a shortarse, I am fairly long in the body, so onepieces never fit me properly, and I wouldn't wear a bikini because jyt stmach is loike blancmange

OracleInaCoracle · 18/05/2008 09:51

but this one looks great!

cornsilk · 18/05/2008 09:52

I like that cossie cod. What colour do you have?

SheikYerbouti · 18/05/2008 09:53

have got this tankini with shorts

SheherazadetheGoat · 18/05/2008 09:55

i look feckin fantastic in my tankini (just don't take any pictures and shatter my illusion!)

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 09:56

ooh lissie that one looks vile.
the ruched one isnt that bad is it? at least lumps and bumps might be mistaken for ruching rather than a lack of exercise?

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 09:58

sheik, yours is nice. but would look shit on me.

oh, who needs to swim anyway?

bigmouthstrikesagain · 18/05/2008 09:58

I have a tankini as I have a long body and find conventional swimsuits too uncomfortable and have not got the figure or tbh the confidence for a bikini. I am also very pale and find myself blinding people on the beach with my white-ness!

So well cut tankini is an improvement imo - or a wetsuit!!??

SheikYerbouti · 18/05/2008 09:59

(Nappies, I need to send your books back! DP and I did lots of sniggering over them, but they have been useful, thank you!)

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:02

Think any of these are better and more flattering - really like the first one for long bodies
