Why do women wear tankinis?

Vivace · 17/05/2008 22:15

They make everyone look bad, yet half the women at the pool were wearing them today. One woman, slim, tall, great legs, good arms, would be amazing in a swimsuit...but had a pot belly, flat chest and some livid stretchmarks, all framed, exaggerated and highlighted by her tankini. Horrible, unflattering garment. Obviously people can wear what they like, but they aren't more comfy than a swimsuit and who over 22 really thinks the slice of their belly above their pants is really the best part of their body?

Far woerse than bad tankinis are women who have big unsupported boobs ion swin=mming cossies IMHO. I want to go and hoik thier nork up and make them look better

cupsoftea · 18/05/2008 10:04

I'll be wearing www1.landsend.co.uk/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prmenbr=361&prrfnbr=2645718&cat_parent=1244600 &cgrfnbr=1244600&mdiv=wm&cat_level=prod or a skirt & top combination.

Great for being in the pool & then having to run after littleones. I just hate ordinary swimsuits as I feel uncomfortable in them.

SheikYerbouti · 18/05/2008 10:04

They are nice but mega £££££ Vivace

And NONE of them would do anything for my immense norkage (Although love that polka dot one)

JackieNo · 18/05/2008 10:04

Oh god Sheik - that's me with the huge unsupported norks. I so need an underwired one, but really can't justify spending the money atm. I keep looking at Bravissimo, and wanting to try theirs, but wimping out. I can't do the ones with the bra strap effect, either, like the one Cod linked to - back's too fat.

cupsoftea · 18/05/2008 10:05

lovely swimsuits for a supermodel vivace but not for me!!

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:06

Or this one for the self-conscious of bottom (or wax phobics) who don't want to showcase their muffin top as tankinis do so well (and if you don't have a hint of muffin top or a tummy roll then for heavens sake buy a bikini or slinky swimsuit and stop hiding - go on, make the rest of us jealous!

oops sorry

bigmouthstrikesagain · 18/05/2008 10:07

£65 for a swimsuit - pah! And unsupported norkage is definately a worse crime after several years of breastfeeding I need support!

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:09

the ballet swimsuit on my link is less than £40 and goes up to a F cup

I've just ordered the brown spot one for myself after linking to it...whoops

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 10:10

sheik - they are snigger-worthy arent they! and you feel a right twat saying some of it, esp at first. but even the in jection of a little humour to the situ can often be enough to save the sanity i find. (though a month in the priory might be a more effective solution in my case arf)

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:10

Not unsupported - foam cups and shelf bra inside the brown and navy spot ones, same as the lands end ones.

OP posts:
cupsoftea · 18/05/2008 10:12

wow vivace! -for me an edwardian cossie & beach carriage to bring me to the sea would be great

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 10:12

the thing about all the links are... you want to see real women in these things dont you? of course the bloodt model looks good in it, but 3 inches of blinkin lycra is hardly going to look the same on an elephant as it does on a gazelle!

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:13

Well yes, I know that feeling. Mind you my 'problem' areas are my thighs, and I'm not wearing a wetsuit at the pool or beach!

Vivace · 18/05/2008 10:14

Maybe a crinoline would be good? A crinoline tankini might work?

(Yes, re models, but Lands End also has slim, gorgeous models but the swimsuits still redefine frump)

cupsoftea · 18/05/2008 10:17

lol vivace - could provide sun cover for little ones as well!!

Beetroot · 18/05/2008 10:19

i wear one abroad so I can whip itoff and get my tits out

I would rarely go near a pool here and if I ded I would wear a cosutme

orangehead · 18/05/2008 10:20

My tankini is more flattering to my figure than a swimsuit. Makes my norks look great

DumbledoresGirl · 18/05/2008 10:35

I wear one because I would like to wear a bikini but I am in my 40s and feel a bit too old for an itsy bitsy bikini. Plus, I have a huge scar running the length of my stomach and, even though it is over 20 years old, it is still very noticable and it irritates me to have people looking at it.

I actually think tankinis flatter a lot of people.

NappiesGalore · 18/05/2008 10:52

cant see these doing much for anyone... but am sorely tempted for the comfort factor... shorts and a ling-line halter or bandeau(w removable straps) top...?
im getting old arent i?

DrNortherner · 18/05/2008 10:56

I have a tankini that I wear when taking ds swimming. I love it. Very flatering on me, though I am lucky that my tum is flat.

I wear bikinis on holiday but never to a swimming pool here.

SheikYerbouti · 18/05/2008 11:29

Jackie No, check out brastop. They do a lot of the same as bravissiom, but cheaper

JackieNo · 18/05/2008 11:33

Thanks SheikYerbouti - I will.

citylover · 18/05/2008 12:36

I feel mumsy, constrained and miserable in a one piece.

I am not sure whether I look OK in my tankini but don't really care. it is comfortable.

I might even wear a bikini on holiday this year. No-one will know me and there is always always someone bigger or looking more ridculous than I must already do on the beach/swimming. I don't mean that in a bitchy way either but a factual way.

If you are going to go on a beach/pool holiday then life is too short to spend your time worrying about what you look like.

I am not too bothered if I take my kids to the swimming pool either.

Also remember a bigger body doesn't necessarily equal worse looking in swimwear. Some thinner people are out of proportion or don't have shape.

When I look at some models in magazines as well I see that alot do not have shape - ie they don't have a waist.

Not everyone finds the androgynous look attractive.
