Handbag trends I wish would go away!

I love handbags. I’m a handbag person. They bring me much joy 🥹

However…

  1. Vegan leather. There’s no such thing as vegan leather. It’s plastic. Or polyurethane or whatever. But “vegan leather” makes me roll my eyes hard 🙄
  2. Oversized bag charms. Especially on really beautiful bags. They look ridiculous. Unless you’re 12… in which case carry on.
  3. People referring to their bags as “her” and “she”. Stop it. I love a good bag unboxing video on YouTube, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine 😂 but your bag, as beautiful as it may be, is not a female. Just stop it!

Have I missed anything?

(Yes yes I know none of these things effect me directly and live and let live and all that etc etc)

The hype of a birkin bag. They're so boring. Actually the Kelly too, especially the mini Kelly as that makes you look you're wearing your daughter's play bag.

DramaAlpaca · 17/03/2025 20:21

OK, I'll play along. These are my own <<lighthearted>> opinions and I apologise in advance for any offence they might cause to handbag fashionistas.

Bag charms full stop. I think they're silly and infantile whatever your age.

Those 'twilly' scarf things wrapped around handles. They look ridiculous on any bag, cheapen an expensive one, and I don't understand why they're a thing.

Adult women carrying cutesy novelty bags that look as if they were designed for five year olds to dress up with.

Baninarama · 17/03/2025 20:50

Yes, yes, yes! I absolutely don't get the Birkin hype. I also don't get the point of see-through bags. Why would anyone want to see all your old tissues and rubbish?

Describing stuff as vegan leather also really grinds my gears - it's plastic and has probably damaged the environment about twice as much as any cow, you fool.

glitterturd · 17/03/2025 20:53

People " wearing " their handbags 😂

Magpie50 · 18/03/2025 00:57

Just out of curiosity what would you prefer they called vegan leather?
Coz 'plastic that has the appearance of leather' is abit of a mouthful!😃
(Speaking as somebody who enjoys handbags and prefers my cows unskinned!).

I don't think I have a handbag hate though...novelty, bag charms, stupidly expensive. Whatever makes you happy!

NotEnoughRoom · 18/03/2025 01:02

I’ve always been fine with “pleather” or “leather-look” - “vegan leather” is just another sales gimmick anyway

DontForgetTheYakMilk · 18/03/2025 01:15

I'll add:
Exhibit A : Stupidly oversize tote bags. Stuff would get lost at the bottom & be difficult to find & if full, would be stupidly heavy. I think the only possible use is to highlight your tiny, tiny hands; and
Exhibit B:' Micro' purses and anything too small in general.. Although I think this trend has died quite quickly.

StMarie4me · 18/03/2025 01:19

Goodness isn’t it exhausting caring so much about … handbags?! Other people’s handbags at that!

Probably not nearly as knackering as feeling and acting upon the need to be bitchy. 🤷🏻‍♀️🙄

LucieChardon · 18/03/2025 02:48

Hate the term "vegan leather", have always used "pleather".

But I do like silly bag charms... just can't bring myself to actually put one on to any of my bags yet!

Wackadaywideawake · 18/03/2025 03:20

I had the same thoughts about “vegan” leather at the weekend! It’s just stupid marketing semantics designed to make leather alternatives more appealing, ethical, and high-end. It’s usually just PVC but that doesn’t sound as good.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 18/03/2025 03:25

I live in a small market town where nobody has a Hermes bag. In fact I'd say about 90% of women use Roka bags, that's how untrendy we are here 😂
However some weird algorithm on FB means I keep being shown videos of people visiting some shop in London to buy Hermes bags at exorbitant prices. They don't look anything special.

I agree about the term "vegan leather". Just call it plastic.

LunaNorth · 18/03/2025 03:31

Fiddly openings. I don’t want to have to thread two straps through six keepers just to put my phone away.

Too much metalwork; padlocks and the like. Too fussy.

Bags with an identity crisis - a bit of tweed, next to a bit of glitter, finished off with a bit of leopard print. Yuk.

Bags that look like something else; a book or a pair of lips or a shoe. Why?

Happyinarcon · 18/03/2025 03:34

I also dislike vegan leather, when it starts to wear it looks awful whereas real leather can look lovely as it ages

Monty27 · 18/03/2025 03:44

I like pockets

GarlicStyle · 18/03/2025 03:49

I like giant totes. They should have a fiendishly clever arrangement of pockets & compartments providing the functionality of two smaller handbags and a shopper, all smoothly encased in a single expanse of supple leather.

I'm just off to gaze at pictures of perfect bags I'll never be able to afford. I may be gone for some time ...

DoComeToMeKitty · 18/03/2025 03:50

Many fashion trends nowadays are what I'd call 'facebook fashion': Birkin style bags, Longchamp, Co-ords, etc.

I wish it would all go just away and can't help but feel a little a bit judgy about women who choose to follow these trends.

Magpie50 · 18/03/2025 04:11

Maybe it's because nor everybody knows what pleather actually is? At least vegan leather tells you what you are getting.
I do agree that the quality is usually naff though, they tend to wear out quickly and tear if you put anything heavy in your bag.
I would honestly love a real leather bag....if only they didn't make them out of animals (it's funny how you can be vegan for years and still be pissed off you can't get decent shoes or eat cheese!😂).

iseenyouwithkefir · 18/03/2025 04:28

The problem I have with "vegan leather" - and it does impact people, albeit as a relatively minor inconvenience - is that it tends to get categorized as "leather" when filtering bag listings by material on e-commerce websites. This defeats the purpose of the filter whether you're looking to include ONLY leather or to include only leather-like synthetics.

murphys · 18/03/2025 05:09

Oh god. I bought a bag recently and referred to it as 'she' without even realising.. 😂 I will stop it as it feel like a right wanker thinking back now.

Vegan leather has been an irritation for me for a while now. It was when I was looking for Docs for my dd, and they are basically the same price too.

And then there are the restoration videos of vintage Coach or whatever. Some do video the whole process, but those that annoy me go something like:

Let me show you how I got the bubbles out of my Le Pliage, cue a bit of music, look, see, here is the bubbled bag.
Next shot is music and no bubbles on bag.
All the comments are asking, so how did you do it.
No reply from creator.

Those that do show the whole process are quite therapeutic though.

The other thing that annoys me about “vegan leather” (just call it faux leather) is the price of them. They’re often as expensive as real leather which is a massive piss take in my opinion. Has anyone seen the prices of Stella McCartney’s bags? She’s having a laugh!

I am a bit confused by bags that don't fully close at the top

Like this one for example which I otherwise think is pretty - https://www.oliverbonas.com/accessories/emma-stripe-tote-bags-377811#selection.color=26355

Maybe this is a Londoner thing but I would worry about my belongings getting rained on or nicked.

You learn something new every day 😄
So women are referring to their handbags as she and her. 🙄👜
