Handbag trends I wish would go away!

I love handbags. I’m a handbag person. They bring me much joy 🥹

However…

  1. Vegan leather. There’s no such thing as vegan leather. It’s plastic. Or polyurethane or whatever. But “vegan leather” makes me roll my eyes hard 🙄
  2. Oversized bag charms. Especially on really beautiful bags. They look ridiculous. Unless you’re 12… in which case carry on.
  3. People referring to their bags as “her” and “she”. Stop it. I love a good bag unboxing video on YouTube, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine 😂 but your bag, as beautiful as it may be, is not a female. Just stop it!

Have I missed anything?

(Yes yes I know none of these things effect me directly and live and let live and all that etc etc)

Vegan leather also grins my gears.

Almost as much as 'recycled polyester' being marketed as somehow better. Nope, just same plastic mashed up twice.

I think we should stop and think I'd any purchase we make is necessary given the state of the planet but more so when it comes to plastic products. It's usually green washing calling something vegan leather when it's just as bad for the planet as animal leather.

I agree with you, but leather is worse for the animals.

sixtyandfabulousofcourse · 18/03/2025 13:14

handbag hangers at tables stupid
bag charms cannot stand them jangling and clanking
scarves tied around bags
novelty bags like dogs they are for kids
printed novelty bags with things like dogs Elvis Marilyn Monroe on them etc again for kids
huge handbags that are like suitcases ok if you need one but you find people with these tend to forget how big they are and if not careful they knock you flying with them!
the stupid prices of so-called designer bags

I like giant totes. They should have a fiendishly clever arrangement of pockets & compartments providing the functionality of two smaller handbags and a shopper, all smoothly encased in a single expanse of supple leather.

I'm just off to gaze at pictures of perfect bags I'll never be able to afford. I may be gone for some time ...

You should look at Kaai bags then, I'm currently trying not to give into temptation with a mini pyramid but the actual pyramid itself sounds like it would suit you perfectly!

Gettingbysomehow · 18/03/2025 13:24

Massive bag charms are apparently "in" this year according to the style pages as are hot pants. I won't be wearing either of those things.

@NormaLouiseBates why use vegan leather or pleather in the first place? it is bloody plastic!! the same as vegan sausages?? why call them that? what is the point of making them look like real sausages? does it make people feel like they are eating real food??

Edited

They're actually made that shape to look like cucumbers ;-)

Nora Ephron did a great essay about handbags (OK she was American so she called it 'purse') and how much she hated them. Used to love bags but in lockdown just got used to going out with keys and phone and never got back into them. I do have random handbags for nights out but, like Nora, I just generally use a museum or bookshop canvas tote now if I need to take a book or laptop out.

Edit - basically I think, like coats, you cannot have a one-size-fits-all handbag. You need lots of different ones to suit your outing and outfit and we all get tied up in knots with handbags because we think that there is the ONE perfect statement one that will go with everything/carry everything we need at all times/grab and go but also be dainty and delicate and designer and glamorous. It is not possible.

Edit 2 - I do like a restaurant that provides a special chair for a handbag. We went to a lovely one in Cannes over the summer and a very chic lady had her bag (might have been Gucci?) on its own padded seat.

Nora Ephron's Hilarious Essay About Purses Proves That The Concept Of Having It All Together Is A Total Myth

Everyone knows her: That woman who just seems to always be so perfectly put together. And she's not just killing it at work or in her relationships — she looks put together, too. Maybe her makeup is always impeccable. Or maybe her hair is never not…

My current bag gripe is the fact that the current Longchamp Le Pliage bag (large) is smaller than the one I have that I'm looking to replace, and I
a) I really can't imagine managing with a smaller one, or
b) find a suitable alternative before I go on holiday in 2 weeks

Help!

Ironfloor269 · 18/03/2025 13:50

Michael Korrs in huge gold letters. Nothing screams chavvy new rich than that.

FKAT · 18/03/2025 13:50

Sorry I just wittered on about bags generally and didn't answer the OP. I hate those handbags that look like bumbags but are slung around the shoulder that all the kids have (my son has one) - worst of all worlds IMO.

Sausages are a food shape/type whatever they are made of. If you want accuracy, the meat would be called something like ‘rolled up pig’! Beef stake would be called ‘piece of cow’!

See what I love about Mulberry is that they’re classic, timeless styles that aren’t in your face designer. You wouldn’t see one and automatically know it was expensive and I like that about them.

Yes, I just don’t see them like that. I think the logo can be quite obvious, and they seem to be everywhere. To me it seems people buy them and put no thought into it, they’re just a designer handbag that they’ve bought as a treat. I think there are so many more interesting, classic handbags about. To me they’re the Kate Middleton of the handbag world. Nice enough, not particularly interesting, but not going to offend anyone!

CharlotteCChapel · 18/03/2025 16:28

Not an I hate but I recently watched a new season for one of the big designers possibly Chanel. Their handbag was a handle with rings that you can attach things too. That was it and people were saying how much they loved them . Either trolling or more money than sense.

And you can buy just handles on Amazon

You said it " wearing" 😤 you don't wear a bag charm 😂

Just out of curiosity what would you prefer they called vegan leather?
Coz 'plastic that has the appearance of leather' is abit of a mouthful!😃
(Speaking as somebody who enjoys handbags and prefers my cows unskinned!).

I don't think I have a handbag hate though...novelty, bag charms, stupidly expensive. Whatever makes you happy!

agreed. I am so glad there are no -leather products. if you don’t like them, don’t buy them. strange people
seem annoyed.

I want ikea to invent me a massive tote insert that would act as a divider (I’ve just decided.)

See also : ‘vegan silk’. It’s viscose, and it will last for ten minutes and then be in landfill, decomposing very slowly and letting off all sorts of nasties which were used in processing it from the wood pulp.

I have silk shirts which I bought forty years ago ago and are still wearable. One of them was old when I bought it.

That's just nonsense about viscose.

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 18/03/2025 17:54

I love handbags.

I hate those moon shaped Uniqlo bags everyone has. It just looks naff in my opinion.

Why are so many bags made out of faux leather? I just want a decent leather bag. The 3 I do have look great and last so well.

AthenaPallas · 18/03/2025 17:57

CharlotteCChapel · 17/03/2025 20:14

The hype of a birkin bag. They're so boring. Actually the Kelly too, especially the mini Kelly as that makes you look you're wearing your daughter's play bag.

Totally agree - they're not actually that great in terms of design, and can look very dated. The Hermes Bolide and Evelyne are much nicer imo.

PrettayGood · 18/03/2025 17:59

Oh yes, the unboxing and anthropomorphising of a bloody bag dies my head in.

Went out for a nice lunch with my husband for his bday last week. I had a Mulberry bag with me - whatever. The staff brought over a tiny footstool for my BAG 😂 I’m really not that precious and felt a bit daft with it next to me.

333FionaG · 18/03/2025 18:00

Baninarama · 17/03/2025 20:50

Yes, yes, yes! I absolutely don't get the Birkin hype. I also don't get the point of see-through bags. Why would anyone want to see all your old tissues and rubbish?

Describing stuff as vegan leather also really grinds my gears - it's plastic and has probably damaged the environment about twice as much as any cow, you fool.

See through bags are handy to get into a festival or event with security - they can see at a glance you don't have any weapons, drugs or booze secreted away.

AthenaPallas · 18/03/2025 18:05

My handbag hates:
Massive bags - why? you can't find anything in them, and they weigh a ton.
Expensive "leather" bags which are really just cheap split hides with a plasticized finish. I'm looking at you Longchamp, Kors, and Mulberry.
Scarves on handles - just no. Use the bag as god intended. It will be much more comfortable on your hands and look less "desperately trying to keep this pristine so I can resell it".
Monogrammed fabric - Vuitton etc. - cheap and dated looking.
Anything Burberry which has that hideous check.
Thanks for reading - that was quite therapueutic!

bunnibee · 18/03/2025 18:22

I am very embarrassed to admit I have a Birkin. It is 12 years old and I don't put a twilly or decorate with charms. It is hideously battered and worn. And I have a 8 year old Evelyne, super practical

Can I be seen out in public with them??? everyone seems to dislike Hermes here.

On the other hand.. I avoid people with a backpack on. Can't you see how bloody annoying you are when you swing about knocking into other people? you look as though you're going camping, no sense of style whatsoever.

And yes I know that's inflammatory!!!!

Comedycook · 18/03/2025 18:24

I love Hermes bags... especially the Kelly. I doubt I'll ever own one sadly!

I am not a fan of mulberry bags...they are so dull to me.

To my eye they there’s little difference between them. The Birkin and the Bayswater both look like the sensible type of bags my great aunt would have used.
