Handbag trends I wish would go away!

I love handbags. I’m a handbag person. They bring me much joy 🥹

However…

  1. Vegan leather. There’s no such thing as vegan leather. It’s plastic. Or polyurethane or whatever. But “vegan leather” makes me roll my eyes hard 🙄
  2. Oversized bag charms. Especially on really beautiful bags. They look ridiculous. Unless you’re 12… in which case carry on.
  3. People referring to their bags as “her” and “she”. Stop it. I love a good bag unboxing video on YouTube, it’s a guilty pleasure of mine 😂 but your bag, as beautiful as it may be, is not a female. Just stop it!

Have I missed anything?

(Yes yes I know none of these things effect me directly and live and let live and all that etc etc)

I hate the term vegan leather too.
Great marketing though.
Sounds so much better than plastic or polyurethane.
A wallet on a chain looks great but it’s truly form over function.
If it can’t take my phone, house key, lipstick, tissue and purse it’s not much use is it ?
I have an LV Neverfull tote - open - no zip 🙄 so I bought one of those large plastic make up bags, M&S and Primark sell them, often in a set of 2 or 3 see through bags and I put my essentials in that in the tote bag. Keeps my phone and purse safe from pickpockets.

I guess in the same way that ‘leather’ sounds better than ‘animal skin’. Or for a lot of luxury ‘leather’ products we could say ‘the skin of a baby animal that has been kept in a crate so small that it cannot turn around in order to preserve the blemish free nature of its skin before it is slaughtered at a few weeks old’. How about that?

I dont like or even own a handbag.

LasVegass · 18/03/2025 08:57

Thank you for saying that @Wiennetta. I always hesitate when opening handbag threads as I think handbag adoration is such a pointless thing. I think we should stop and think if another leather handbag is needed in our wardrobe, or the world. I’m too cowardly to say so, hence my meek vegan leather comment above, but thank you for doing so.

MonickerMonica · 18/03/2025 09:03

Thanks to this amusing thread I've just ordered a new bag. It's pink and under £20

The other thing that annoys me about “vegan leather” (just call it faux leather) is the price of them. They’re often as expensive as real leather which is a massive piss take in my opinion. Has anyone seen the prices of Stella McCartney’s bags? She’s having a laugh!

Absolutely, please don't try and sell me plastic, that will not wear as well as leather, for the same price.

For people who don't like leather for ethical reasons, try Vinted for leather handbags - all the benefits of leather without supporting the meat trade.

I tried this. One I paid for before realiesing that one of the handles was almost worn through and the other was so small it must of been for a toddler!😅

ah well, guess I will have to keep supporting the vegan leather trade (and calling it vegan leather now I know it annoys so many people!!LOL).

cough veganleather cough😏

Shetlands · 18/03/2025 10:08

Oh no @henlake7 what a disappointment! I've been lucky on Vinted and very pleased with my purchases. I only shop using my laptop so I can blow the photos up to scrutinise, which helps perhaps.

I don’t believe that would be legal in the Uk. A better description would be the skin of an animal which is a byproduct of the meat trade and would otherwise be discarded.

I’m not sure it’s legal to raise calves like this in the UK, but you can buy luxury calfskin products very easily. If you wouldn’t eat veal, you might want to think about whether you’d buy a calfskin leather purse.

There’s a general belief that leather is a by product of the meat industry and it would just go to waste if not used. However it’s more complicated - it’s more accurately described as a Co-product or it might be the main product. Especially when you’re talking about expensive leather.

There Are Not Enough Cows to Produce Luxury Leather

Hermès is among the luxury brands that have complained about the lack of quality hides.

Magpie50 · 18/03/2025 04:11

Maybe it's because nor everybody knows what pleather actually is? At least vegan leather tells you what you are getting.
I do agree that the quality is usually naff though, they tend to wear out quickly and tear if you put anything heavy in your bag.
I would honestly love a real leather bag....if only they didn't make them out of animals (it's funny how you can be vegan for years and still be pissed off you can't get decent shoes or eat cheese!😂).

We all knew what pleather meant before the term vegan leather was invented. Pleather isn’t a new thing! We’ve had fake leather for years and years.

I dont like or even own a handbag.
I have a backpack.

Me too for 90% of the time. I do have a very nice handbag that I use when I'm at F2F work meetings but those are few and far between now.

I have a very practical ROKA rucksack that I use every day.

Heidi2018 · 18/03/2025 10:31

I hate a bag unboxing video. It's very show-offy in my opinion!

I also hate small clutch bags that you have to fight with every time you want to close them, everything has to be place in perfectly or they won't close..... yet I still buy/use one every time for special occasions 😅

Ive got a hippy looking back pack but have just ordered a roka rucksack should arrive today.

SemperIdem · 18/03/2025 10:36

Unlined bags. No, I am not paying hundreds or thousands of pounds for an unlined handbag.

I’d go to Zara if I wanted that.

Deathraystare · 18/03/2025 11:01

DramaAlpaca · 17/03/2025 20:21

OK, I'll play along. These are my own <<lighthearted>> opinions and I apologise in advance for any offence they might cause to handbag fashionistas.

Bag charms full stop. I think they're silly and infantile whatever your age.

Those 'twilly' scarf things wrapped around handles. They look ridiculous on any bag, cheapen an expensive one, and I don't understand why they're a thing.

Adult women carrying cutesy novelty bags that look as if they were designed for five year olds to dress up with.

If you are including Kipling bags (with the monkey novelty tag) then I may have to stab you! Although my backpack has no monkey but my purse does!

glitterturd · 18/03/2025 11:05

I like pockets

I knew that would make an appearance here 😂😂

LaPetitePouleRousse · 18/03/2025 11:15

I hate handbag snobbery - 'oh my dear, not that make, everyone who's anyone knows it's regarded as naff'... We are not insecure teenagers in the schoolyard, to judge people by their labels.

But I do like a secure top fastening, and I wish there weren't so many of those 'rolled into a tube' shoulder straps around - I find them hard and uncomfortable and prefer an old-fashioned flat strap.

OurSis · 18/03/2025 11:16

Magpie50 · 18/03/2025 00:57

Just out of curiosity what would you prefer they called vegan leather?
Coz 'plastic that has the appearance of leather' is abit of a mouthful!😃
(Speaking as somebody who enjoys handbags and prefers my cows unskinned!).

I don't think I have a handbag hate though...novelty, bag charms, stupidly expensive. Whatever makes you happy!

Leather Look
Leatherette
Faux Leather
Faux Suede
Suedette
all worked well for years.

LaPetitePouleRousse · 18/03/2025 11:17

And a silk scarf tied to the handle is practical - it's so handy if you need a little extra warmth or to tie your hair back, and it doesn't get mashed up and tangled in the general chaos of the bag contents...

It also personalises my logo-free bag.

I think we should stop and think I'd any purchase we make is necessary given the state of the planet but more so when it comes to plastic products. It's usually green washing calling something vegan leather when it's just as bad for the planet as animal leather.

Pinktruffle · 18/03/2025 11:48

narniabusiness · 18/03/2025 07:59

vegan leather gets on my nerves too. Like vegan cheese- I want to know what it’s actually made of. Either call it PVC or tell me it’s made of cactus or apple or what ever. I suspect the problem is that the cactus and apple types need a good coating of PVC to help consolidate them, but I’d love to be proved wrong.
WOC is another one that can die a death. Bags that are too small to fit a phone and can only take a credit card are useless imho.
I hope this thread doesn’t turn into a slag off bags in general thread because I do love a handbag video. (despite not understanding the love for Louis Vuitton) I really enjoy Steph of Handbagsholic. Who’s your favourite?

You know, I never got the love for Louis Vuitton either but recently I was in Selfridges and walked past their boutique and the LV Bella Tote is bloody beautiful in real life, so much so that I am now saving up for one. Gorgeous bag. Fist thing I've ever liked by LV, and I can't believe I am actually seriously considering buying one

wizzywig · 18/03/2025 11:53

My contribution is: designers that put the same bloody print on every soddding thing, eg, Orla Keily and lulu Guinness (the one with the lip print as her design).

Knittedfairies2 · 18/03/2025 11:56

There was a post a while ago - I can't remember the context - where a poster remarked that a particular handbag 'just screams TKMaxx!' It's a phrase that lives in my head.

jay55 · 18/03/2025 12:08

I like Twillys but don’t understand bag charms, especially the cost of them.
Id totally buy a big Kelly if it was ever in my budget. But a Birkin will always look like a Sunday school teacher bag to me.

Chuchoter · 18/03/2025 12:13

Those bloody awful interchangeable straps on cheapo bags.
