Are skirt suits not a thing any more? Help!

I have a wedding coming up in May and finding options extremely limited thanks to breastfeeding. I'd thought of maybe a co-ord top + skirt, or blazer / short skirt suit combo, but they don't seem to exist any more.

Are these not a thing?! What could I wear instead?! Am I old and dated?!

Help!!

If you give your clothing size and preferred budget I’m sure people could suggest some things.

janispoplin · 18/02/2025 10:52

I was in a vintage shop near Covent Garden last weekend that has some absolutely beautiful skirt suits. I have no need for one (plus my arse wouldn't squeeze into one) but I love the idea of one for a wedding.

Usually, though, when I think of skirt suits I think of 1980's bank employees Blush

& Other Stories has this gorgeous jacket with a matching skirt - if you’d be happy with the colour:

My friend and I recently attended an event where she was breastfeeding and wore the Lyra dress from Lady Vintage:

Looked fab and made breastfeeding easy for her.

I've a feeling skirt suits will be back again very soon but probably not in time for May unfortunately.

I see vintage has already been mentioned. I wore a 1960s suit to a wedding a couple of years ago and it felt good. They're still around although getting harder to find and the sizings are not kind (I had to keep the jacket on all the time as the skirt didn't fasten - luckily it was a 'crisp' early spring day.)

This also would made a splendid wedding guest outfit, with either the co ordinating trousers or a skirt in a similar colour:

It does have a slightly vintage look! (Though I know you haven’t specifically asked for that, @Teamustbefromateapot.)

Teamustbefromateapot · 18/02/2025 11:22

Sorry, not sure how to reply, but would be grateful for all recs!

I'm around a 10/12, probably more 12. 5ft 6. Late 20s. Carrying most weight in bust and belly and happiest with legs, hence the thought of a shorter skirt and the jacket to hide all sins! Don't tend to suit wrap dresses as I've quite narrow shoulders, which makes finding things with bf access hard. I find specific clothes tend to not be my style.

Oh and budget maybe £150

This sounds amazing, though you're probably not wrong about the 80s look 🤣

Love the style but perhaps a bit light for wedding imo. Gorgeous though!

This is lovely! Not sure I'd have the bust to fill it though, sadly

Do the skirt and jacket have to match? From what you've said about yourself (and given that finding vintage in the right size when you want it can be a nightmare) I'd look for a jacket like the one Betsy linked, or maybe one of those boucle Chanel-looking jackets - it's predicted that there will be loads in the shops this year - and then a short, A-line skirt in a colour and fabric that will 'go' but don't scream, 'suit'. I don't know why, just a feeling.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 18/02/2025 12:16

I'm sure I read somewhere this week that skirt suits are very much back on trend!

StarlightLady · 18/02/2025 14:34

I think skirt suits are still a thing. It's just that since log down attire generally has become more casual. So, fewer suits, fewer skirt suits. Plus more women are opting for trousers in the colder weather. I bought an amazing multi functional suit in Paris some years ago which still sees the light of day. It came with a jacket (obviously), matching trousers (they rarely see the light of day I'm not a frequent trouser wearer), matching skirt and a matching sleeveless dress. So you had 3 different outfits in one. I wish more manufacturers would have cottoned on to this.

This could totally work, thank you:)

Sorry they are over budget but I can't think of anywhere else I've seen skirt suits.

Two of those options are over £300 and OP said her budget is £150!

I do love the first one though 😍

madamweb · 19/02/2025 09:03

I used to wear a skirt and a top with a cardigan for weddings at the breastfeeding stage.

Samung · 19/02/2025 09:10

If you're tempted by vintage maybe have a look at Pretty Kitty - loads of choice there.

ForRealCat · 19/02/2025 11:42

Hate to say it Shein has some, I think they can be an option when you don't want something current. There's a few on there with Chanel vibes
