Are skirt suits not a thing any more? Help!

I have a wedding coming up in May and finding options extremely limited thanks to breastfeeding. I'd thought of maybe a co-ord top + skirt, or blazer / short skirt suit combo, but they don't seem to exist any more.

Are these not a thing?! What could I wear instead?! Am I old and dated?!

Help!!

I used to wear a skirt and a top with a cardigan for weddings at the breastfeeding stage.

I have done this for a few things, but after 4 years consecutive feeding (3 kids), I am desperate for something different lol!

Wrap dresses or button up with a cami or slip underneath work great for breastfeeding.

TravellingJack · 19/02/2025 12:12

If wrap dresses don't suit, are you ok with the pull up or the pull aside type? I had a couple of bf dresses that were like this (one was Seraphine, second hand from Vinted I think) and the other (H&M) looked like a normal dress with an elasticated waist. I actually still have it cos I've never found another dress that colour/style that I like as much!

check L K Bennett. Something like this maybe? It's a vibrant color so doesn't look like work clothes

I've a feeling skirt suits will be back again very soon but probably not in time for May unfortunately.

I see vintage has already been mentioned. I wore a 1960s suit to a wedding a couple of years ago and it felt good. They're still around although getting harder to find and the sizings are not kind (I had to keep the jacket on all the time as the skirt didn't fasten - luckily it was a 'crisp' early spring day.)

Yes, you have to remember that a 60s size 12 is somewhere around size 4-6 (I have a 70s jacket which is size 12 and tiny, it used to fit me, sigh...)

drhf · 19/02/2025 14:54

I can second this - I’m a 4-6 in high street clothes and prefer a 12 before the 1980s.

The Telegraph has an article today all about the rise of the skirt suit

Zara generally have "Chanel-style" jackets, i e short and boxy. I bought a silk one about 15 years ago and often bring it out for dressy day time events. It has been much admired on most of its outings.

Ta dah ! Sister Jane turns up trumps again.

Sister Jane suit 1
Sister Jane suit 2
Baum und Pferdgarten suit

Wow that first suit is dreamy!

Skule · 19/02/2025 16:19

There's a lot of very short, boxy skirt suits around at the moment, inspired by the last Celine collection - Mango, Mango 2, Mango 3.

Floisme · 19/02/2025 16:23

Just going back to vintage, yup they're smaller than current sizes but I find a 1960s swingy jacket works well for me because I have disproportionately narrow shoulders and it sounds like the op does too. The boxy shape means you don't have to worry too much about the fit anywhere else. I find it's the suit skirt that's the problem.

Animatic · 19/02/2025 17:38

Check Seraphine. They cater for pregnancy but most dresses and tops are made for nursing too(all the rights cuts and buttons in the right places).

I think skirt suits are still a thing. It's just that since log down attire generally has become more casual. So, fewer suits, fewer skirt suits. Plus more women are opting for trousers in the colder weather. I bought an amazing multi functional suit in Paris some years ago which still sees the light of day. It came with a jacket (obviously), matching trousers (they rarely see the light of day I'm not a frequent trouser wearer), matching skirt and a matching sleeveless dress. So you had 3 different outfits in one. I wish more manufacturers would have cottoned on to this.

M and s used to do this in the early 00s. You could buy the jacket, skirt, trousers, dress all to match. I've still got one set in my wardrobe- still good to go!
I loved them- really good for my school slt role

What about a lace tie front blazer and co-ordinating or contrasting top and short skirt? Lace trim is very on trend and a modern take on skirt suit.

Yes, I've a beautiful one from bump and milk that I could wear, but it would be it's 5th wedding haha!

CloBo89 · 19/02/2025 19:44

sorry not skirt suit but have you had a look at Juno jacks (breastfeeding brand) dresses to see if you like any of these? junojacks.co.uk/collections/dresses

Skirt suits have not been fashionable for 35 years! Could you try a button up shirt dress? Or a top tucked into a midi/maxi skirt?

Skirt suits were normal office wear and wedding wear 35 years ago and well beyond that.

For modern times if the likes of Mango, Baum und Pferdgarten and Sister Jane are selling I think it's safe that they're making a comeback.
