Are skirt suits not a thing any more? Help!

Teamustbefromateapot · 18/02/2025 10:40

I have a wedding coming up in May and finding options extremely limited thanks to breastfeeding. I'd thought of maybe a co-ord top + skirt, or blazer / short skirt suit combo, but they don't seem to exist any more.

Are these not a thing?! What could I wear instead?! Am I old and dated?!

Help!!

Zara have this and a matching skirt.

The yellow brocade jacket should look good with a solid coloured skirt in a toning shade of yellow. This might work and I like the fact that there is a little bit of interest in the cut. https://www.reiss.com/style/su369732/e47895#E47895
Also on sale at John Lewis at a big discount https://www.johnlewis.com/reiss-cleo-mini-skirt-yellow/p112120815

Next seem to be keen on skirt suits. I bought a 3 piece from Vinted last month, not wedding but recent as a student bought the same (male) version too brand new. If you don’t want to spend a fortune, type skirt suit into Vinted. I sold a pale pink trouser suit on there recently, would have been perfect for a wedding.

I saw bouclé style jackets in Asda this week. How about a knee length dress and that type of jacket? Also lots in Primark.

@StarlightLady who was this by?
Sounds like a brilliant idea.

M&S used to do similar. Our receptionists had a navy jacket with matching pencil skirt or short skirt or trousers.

Anyway. The Telegraph has spoken...

I'd definitely look at Seraphine. I've had a couple of lovely things for events from there. And it often comes up on Vinted barely worn.

Themagicclaw · 20/02/2025 18:45

Also you could post on the "can I breastfeed in it? UK" Facebook group - loads of people post their "normal shop" outfits that have BF access. There's something like 90k members and people are so nice and helpful!

Tropicalturnip · 20/02/2025 21:10

Have a look on Seraphine, they often have occasion dresses that you can breastfeed in and they are really nice quality - I've got a couple and I've worn them lots of times for different occasions and they're really comfy! Or you could wear a low cut maxi dress with a bit of stretch so you can just pull it to one side to feed?

User543211 · 20/02/2025 21:21

I haven't read every post sorry but have you considered a trouser suit? I wore a lilac Joe browns one to a wedding last year and got many compliments! Then a nice top underneath. I went for a cami but lots of breastfeeding friendly options out there.

If you don't mind second hand have a look on ebay.

Also what about a shorts suit?

Oh now that's something I hadn't thought of!

Thanks everyone for your replies!
@Grammarnut , I was thinking a cami top underneath the jacket or blazer, that could be lifted up to discretely feed one up one down style, using jacket for side coverage. Unfortunately, family wedding in a teepee with no dark / cosy corners and a nosy baby who won't use a cover means anything that opens straight down is a no from me, personally! I feel too exposed with the top of my chest out. Though I have no problem with anyone else doing it.

@XxSideshowAuntSallyx I love that! If it was even march, not may I would Def consider :)
@Londonmummy66 I love that reiss skirt, incredible!! That may be a winner 😍.

Haven't considered a trouser suit purely because the only part of my body that feels somewhat 'me' ATM are my legs, so kinda wanted to go shorter!! @User543211 though my friend wore a hot pink trouser suit when feeding at a wedding last year and looked amazing!

Ladies,
What do we think of something like this? I don't love black for a wedding, but quite drawn to it?!

It looks as if she hasn't done the zip up properly at the back and it's falling off.

I see it's a skirt and top. The skirt's not bad, the top just looks wrong.

I like most of them Princess Catherine is wearing Erdem- Erdem has had skirt suits for as long as I've been aware of the brand.

Floisme · 21/02/2025 08:14

Here's an archived link - no paywall - to that Telegraph article. (Sorry if someone's already posted it.)
They're mainly shown with longer skirts and I know the op's looking for short but there are some high street suggestions and various tips near the end.

archive.ph/6UnYU

I disagree with the Telegraph that they're timeless but it's certainly looks like their time has come around again. And it seems my first post got it wrong - they're very much in the shops already! It fascinates me how something can be written off and then suddenly return and look fresh and interesting all over again. Fashion is weird like that but then that's why I enjoy it.

Londonmummy66 · 21/02/2025 10:48

Oh for the budget to buy Anna Wintour's McQueen suit............

whatonearthisgoingonnow · 21/02/2025 10:51

I don't think they're timeless at all, the only people who actually wear them are royals trying to channel Princess Diana with their own spin on it and secretaries in 90s porn and sleeze movies.

I certainly wouldn't wear one to a wedding, not even a formal job interview.

Except Anya Hindmarch and Anna WIntour both wore them recently (Anna's was amazing tbh). This is what the linked article is saying.

IHaveAlwaysLivedintheCastle · 21/02/2025 18:29

I prefer Kate's and Demi Moore's Erdem suits.

Notsuchafattynow · 21/02/2025 19:18

This is a co ord rather than pencil skirt suit but saw it today any maybe you could feed baby from under the top?

I think skirt suits look a bit worky for a wedding.

I'd always go for a dress, and never shorter than knee length. Seraphine was my go to for nursing dresses, i had a fabulous one from there that i wore to a few weddings.

User781 · 22/02/2025 08:39

As an alternative to skirt suits, I found Seraphine had good nursing dresses suitable for occasions. I had a really nice one that I got from Vinted with discreet zips for breastfeeding.

Maboscelar · 22/02/2025 08:43

Nobody's Child had a section for breastfeeding friendly dresses with a wide selection of styles.
