Leggings - and what to wear with them

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 17/02/2025 14:22

Following on from an earlier post from another OP about leggings - I have ordered some 😀

When I used to wear them I used to wear oversized t shirts and felt frumpy.

How do you style your leggings? quite like the idea of maybe an oversized shirt over a vest? But I have no clue?

Would you wear with boots or trainers? A long cardigan. I want to be able to go out in them, maybe to supermarket, maybe for coffee or a cheeky glass of wine, so maybe smart casual?

People can wear what they like obviously but they are so unforgiving. I can’t get my head around the fashion for leggings so tight they show off your body parts, especially the nude shades that make the wearer look naked.

Agreed - they are a terrible look. Fine for exercising but no one wants to look at the outline of your bottom and crotch area in any other context.

They look lovely but are they worth £60 for a plain hoody? Not a snarky comment genuinely interested in buying but don't want to waste money.

To be fair I have only ever bought them in the sale. I think I paid around £38 each. But saying that - they are excellent. Very cosy, fit perfectly, wash well. I was admiring my friend’s Adanola one & she said don’t bother - it’s not a patch on her Abercrombie ones. I’ve got rid of my cheaper ones now.

Thank you, they do look lovely I'll look out for the sale!

I haven’t worn leggings since I was 16 back in 1992. Whenever I see any adult woman wearing leggings I just assume she’s too lazy to dress herself properly.

It's usually rounder middle aged women with no imagination

HereComesEverybody · 21/02/2025 13:09

I get that leggings are probably comfortable but my god they look so awful on the far greater majority of people wearing them

Even women with the proportions of a model don't look good.

Surely with all the choice we have in clothes there are other options?

AmeliaTangfastic · 21/02/2025 13:12

I don't wear mine as trousers - I look too top heavy due to skinny (not in a good way) legs

Mine are usually under dresses that are just a smidgen too short to wear comfortably at work (I have to bend down a lot). I prefer them to tights as they are warmer in winter and less sweaty in spring.

Clingfilm · 21/02/2025 13:18

Amazed at all these legging wearers! I only see (clone) teenage girls wearing them - black leggings, white calf socks, bomber jacket/white fox hoodie and long straight hair.

I wear them to the gym only these days, as they remind me of wearing them to death with dresses when I was pregnant 15 years ago,

And I don't own enough long tops to cover my arse which looks good if I do say so myself but feels bare in just leggings!

Also only with boots so my ankles stay warm!

Yes, we have the same clone teens here @clingfilm. Often with a White Fox hoodie and Nike tote bag. It's not a look I like at all

Athleisure look is very popular round here. A gym outfit you wear all day as you're planning on going later. Lots of lululemon dupes everywhere atm so I assume it's a fairly common look?

rockstarshoes · 21/02/2025 13:54

Really easy outfits for day to day!

There was another thread about legs a while ago I'll see if I can find it!

Here it is!

What do you wear with leggings? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/styleandd_beauty/5211442-what-do-you-wear-with-leggings

HereComesEverybody · 21/02/2025 13:58

I think all of those outfits in the picture above would look so much better with trousers or a skirt

The leggings ruin it & look all wrong with a wool coat etc

VindiVici · 21/02/2025 14:26

I just hate leggings on anyone unless they are going to the gym or on a run. Or possibly lounging in the house.

They are rarely flattering.

I don't consider them 'proper clothes'.

They used to be 'in' about 30 years ago when we wore them with long baggy jumpers or tunics. This is not an exaggeration to say I wore them around 1995.

I think most people look better in trousers or dresses and skirts with thick tights if it's cold.

Lampzade · 21/02/2025 14:51

i love my black leggings ( I have twenty pairs ) .

I usually wear them with a long fitted hoodie/ sweatshirt to the gym or as casual everyday wear . They are always three quarter length as I dont like full length leggings
I have really great legs ( fit and toned) so they do look good on me
I also like fitted three quarter length capri trousers

Lampzade · 21/02/2025 14:53

Most models are extremely thin. Leggings are not flattering if one has very thin legs .

Gettingbysomehow · 21/02/2025 14:58

I love Llama leggings and have many they are really thick and no underwear shows through. I also wear their joggers. I'm 63 but I have nice legs so I'll wear colourful leggings with a plain tunic top, long jumper or hoodie in a nice colour, pink or some other colour in the leggings. I refuse to wear old lady clothes and check it all front and back in a full length mirror before I go out.

Fortunately, I look amazing in them.

Nasty things, unless you’re between the age of 13-18 and a size 6-8 or a personal trainer who “ lives” in a gym , no woman should wear them

Thanks for this. All women should immediately conform with your style dictats and burn all clothing you deem unacceptable.

HouseAshamed · 21/02/2025 15:17

@pompey38 , how would you police the age policy? Should younger children be prevented from wearing them?
I'm size 8, slim and fit, and a few decades over 18.

HouseAshamed · 21/02/2025 15:28

I also like fitted three quarter length capri trousers Those are a style I avoid. They look awful on me.
I like most trousers and shorts but nothing cropped or wide.

Beautifulweeds · 21/02/2025 17:53

I tend to wear long tops which have a shape and boots but anything goes.

They are if they fit properly!

Leggings just look unimaginative to me. Like you can't be bothered so just chucked on a pair of black leggings.
(And why are they always black? I rarely see any other colours being worn.)

Garlicworth · 22/02/2025 04:06

Like you can't be bothered so just chucked on a pair of black leggings. Well, that's accurate in my case! I sometimes take the trouble to find a coloured pair that 'go with'.

When getting dressed, my concern is never to give other people the impression I put a lot of effort into it. Even when I really have, my aim is to make it look effortless.

Insouciant beats 'curated' for me every time 😎

Interesting that you’d wear colours. For me, any leggings outside the gym absolutely must be black. But then I also hate coloured tights on adults.
