Leggings - and what to wear with them

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 17/02/2025 14:22

Following on from an earlier post from another OP about leggings - I have ordered some 😀

When I used to wear them I used to wear oversized t shirts and felt frumpy.

How do you style your leggings? quite like the idea of maybe an oversized shirt over a vest? But I have no clue?

Would you wear with boots or trainers? A long cardigan. I want to be able to go out in them, maybe to supermarket, maybe for coffee or a cheeky glass of wine, so maybe smart casual?

Channel Claudia Winkleman in the Traitors so longer line black velvet blazer over a buttoned up or high neck black shirt or a long line grey roll neck in a fairly chunky knit. https://www.elle.com/uk/fashion/celebrity-style/g63319684/claudia-winkleman-the-traitors-outfits/

Remember when you used to be able to go onto ASOS and put in a celebrity and they would bring you up their fashion, was so much easier back then! lol

Today I have my leggings on with a long black vest top and a Superdry overshiret and I'm wearing Lanx booots.
Yesterday it was with a hip length hoody and New Balance trainers.

Im a big leggings fan these days! Outside of the gym/WFH, I wear them with longer jumpers. Our office is pretty casual these days so I’ve worn them with shorter tops but I do feel it’s more appropriate to cover the crotch area ideally 😆
Smarter style, cashmere tunics are a good option

Yes me too, I can't wear without covering my crotch, couldn't bear the thought of it showing.

I get long vest tops and wear a hoodie over

HouseAshamed · 19/02/2025 18:40

Wear them whichever way you like. You could wear them with a short top, a long top or hoodie, or with a tunic-length dress.
Depends on your style.

If I go to the shop or something, I try to wear a parka-type coat.

RaveToTheGrave1 · 19/02/2025 18:40

Crop top or longer jumper!

Just don't be that women who wears skin toned ones 4 sizes too small and has clearly never seen herself from behind!😂

Saw one of those the other day in Leicester Square. Horrific, and not only from behind!

I've never worried that my bits will show through leggings.....I'm assuming this is something of an issue for women who wear tiny scraps of dental floss as pants? (Not the thick, sturdy granny pants I wear!).😁

I would struggle to make leggings look fashionable as proper bottoms though, round my way your cheap Primark leggings are very much the choice of busy mums and teenagers. They feel like what you wear when you can't be bothered thinking of what to wear!

Well, leggings arrived from Amazon and I am well impressed, 3 pairs for £21.99, they are not see through. I am a size 12 and ordered L-XL and they fit perfect and they are lovely material. Definitely going to be ordering in a different colour. Just need to go shopping for some tops to go with them

I have been buying these exact leggings for around 2 years and they are amazing! Best leggings I've ever had. Don't roll down. Not see through at all, and just a really nice fit. And soft! 10/10

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 19/02/2025 20:22

I have those leggings OP. They are soft! But they come up very big.

FancyAnxiety · 19/02/2025 21:35

I wear them as trousers substitutes tbh - started in the pandemic and now I never wear jeans. If I cover my bum I look old 😆 but my leggings are very opaque and thick. So I wear them with boxy short t shirts and cropped sweatshirts.

pompey38 · 19/02/2025 21:43

Nasty things, unless you’re between the age of 13-18 and a size 6-8 or a personal trainer who “ lives” in a gym , no woman should wear them

I’ve got these, they are great

Nellsbell · 19/02/2025 22:40

I’ve got H&M ribbed leggings which are quite thick and lasted well I’d buy again. I’ve bought a cream oversized jumper from new look to wear with them. I do wear cropped type sweaters and hoodies too. I don’t mind showing off my bum. I just wear a long coat and uggs/high tops. Recently slouch type socks too. comfort is the answer!

Yes this is the only remotely stylish look with leggings IMO.

Another recommendation for Joe Browns on this thread WTAF! Truly the most hideous clothes imaginable - is there an issue with their staff promoting on here??

Yes. DP says lycra is a privilege not a right (for men too) and he's not wrong.

Itsanewnameeveryday · 20/02/2025 02:28

I’d add something that offsets the casual or gym vibe, chunky boots, military style or denim oversized shirt, neutral oversized jacket or coat, chunky knit, scarf, puffy gillet or vest etc. Something fashion-y, logo, a band T-shirt or designer trainers can add an “ I could choose to wear anything but wore leggings” element.

Menswear shops are great for shirts or try an actual army disposals, look for vintage wool jumpers and learn how to care for them and try Uniqlo for neural or navy puffy vests and coats.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 20/02/2025 02:38

I only wear them to the gym or for running, but certainly don't have a top which covers up my bottom, even for yoga.

Except that he is because the last time I checked people could wear what the hell they wanted. There’s plenty of dress styles I think look awful but I don’t try and make myself sound all snooty by saying trite like it’s a privilege to wear a certain fabric. I love leggings and don’t give two hoots whether some people think they are nasty. The ones I wear most certainly are not.

OctopusFriend · 20/02/2025 08:58

This is an interesting thread - I don't own a pair of leggings, because I have to look smart for work, and outside of that I wear casual trousers and a jumper.
Do you all wfh or in a very casual environment?.

Daftypants · 20/02/2025 08:59

Someone will need to prise my leggings off my cold dead body 🤣🤪
I have digestive issues so hate anything digging in to waist or things like jeans riding up and rubbing 😩
I buy mine from Landsend , they are a good quality cotton with a % of elastane .
and a nice deep wide waistband .
I wear long shirts and tops with them , I don’t wear tunics / tunic dresses with them though 🤔
I tend to wear mid calf / ankle boots or sneakers depending on the weather .
( I do also wear dresses in winter but with tights and boots , summer I wear dresses too for comfort)

Isometimeswonder · 20/02/2025 09:05

Leggings are for the gym. That's it.
I don't know why anyone wants something so skintight, especially around the bum/crutch.

So no woman who just goes to the gym or runs or cycles then? Confused

Of course no-one could possibly be fit and toned and a size 12/14, say 🙄

Blarn · 20/02/2025 09:18

I haven't worn leggings since about 2010 except for running, not for me. I do think they look nice when I see them worn with a really nice sweater dress or an oversized checked shirt, usually with chunky ankle boots. They always look better with boots than with trainers to my eyes.
