Leggings - and what to wear with them

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 17/02/2025 14:22

Following on from an earlier post from another OP about leggings - I have ordered some 😀

When I used to wear them I used to wear oversized t shirts and felt frumpy.

How do you style your leggings? quite like the idea of maybe an oversized shirt over a vest? But I have no clue?

Would you wear with boots or trainers? A long cardigan. I want to be able to go out in them, maybe to supermarket, maybe for coffee or a cheeky glass of wine, so maybe smart casual?

I wear mine with a long cardigan outside. I feel they’re too shapely to wear without covering my arse in my mid 40’s but I love how comfortable they are.

Newposter180 · 20/02/2025 09:28

I wear leggings all the time to work out or WFH but would only ever wear them out with long boots and an oversized shirt/jumper sort of look where I suppose they’re almost a replacement for skinny jeans. Claudia in Traitors kind of vibe although I’m obviously nowhere near as cool 😂 Wearing under dresses or tunics seems very early 2000s when there was that awful fad for “footless tights”. I prefer to dress up a bit though, I’d feel absolutely shit about myself if I went into a cafe or something with a hoodie and trainers on.

Yes. DP says lycra is a privilege not a right (for men too) and he's not wrong.

I always say commenting on a woman's clothing is a privilege not a right. A privilege reserved for people who are asked for their opinion. Not the right of any random man who in his arrogance takes it upon himself. The world would be a better place if more random men agreed.

Oh the opinion fully applies to men too.

I live in leggings. Depending on the weather either with an oversized hoodie or a t-shirt dress/oversized t-shirt. If going for a glass of wine I'll wear one of my 'nicer' hoodies, eg https://www.next.ie/en/style/su443176/ad5432

I have thermal leggings that I wear as a base layer when it's cold. Occasionally wear them with big chunky mans sweater so sort of tunic length and DM's but I wouldn't wear leggings on their own unless I was going to the gym or running.

Rainallnight · 20/02/2025 22:18

There is no reason to wear leggings if you are not participating in sporting activity.

HereComesEverybody · 20/02/2025 22:25

I don't own any leggings & haven't worn them in many years.

EdithBond · 20/02/2025 23:55

I wear leggings with short (above knee) dresses. I have a hoody sweater dress. And a polo neck jumper dress. And a t-shirt dress for milder weather. Make sure they’re loose fitting. Wear with biker boots or platform trainers. Long pendant necklace.

And all black is best. But then again, I always wear black other than the odd splash of bright colour.

I don’t think leggings look good with a waist length top, other than for a dance class or sport.

Proudestmumofone1 · 21/02/2025 00:06

Look at Sweatshirts and hoodies from H&M. Cheap, good quality and much better price point but similar vibe to branded version like adanola and anine bing.

These are gorgeous and unbelievably affordable. I have several pairs and intend to buy some more.

What a good thing that none of us care what Mr Murasaki thinks.

ChangingHistory · 21/02/2025 00:22

I wear leggings in winter with good quality longer length jumpers, Celtic & Co usually.

Love them because they fit in wellies and long boots for dog walks.

I do think they need chunkier footwear to balance out the shape.

pizzaHeart · 21/02/2025 00:53

I only wear leggings at home or under jeans for warmth. I have nice cotton cropped leggings from M&S bought ages ago and it’s my “home uniform” over summer with a tshirt size up from men department.
Imo leggings are home/gym clothes, I can understand people wearing them for a dog walk or trip to the shop but no more than that.

So if you’d wear leggings and a hoodie to go for a glass of wine, do you literally never wear anything more formal day-to-day? I can’t imagine going somewhere “nice” in that but it’s probably as much the hoodie tbh.

Nope, I'm comfy in my leggings and hoodies. I didn't say I'd go anywhere nice in it!

Sorry I assumed wherever you were going for the wine would be nice haha 😆

Hyperfish808 · 21/02/2025 05:39

People can wear what they like obviously but they are so unforgiving. I can’t get my head around the fashion for leggings so tight they show off your body parts, especially the nude shades that make the wearer look naked.

pompey38 · 19/02/2025 21:43

Nasty things, unless you’re between the age of 13-18 and a size 6-8 or a personal trainer who “ lives” in a gym , no woman should wear them

Leggings aren't just made with lycra. I have a pair from Wallis, cotton mix with a straight line running down at the front, totally a smart look. (Well, would be if I hadn't 'outgrown' them.)

HouseAshamed · 21/02/2025 07:44

@MindenReload , they are usually a blend of fabric containing Lycra. They'd be pretty weird if they were only made with Lycra.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 21/02/2025 07:53

To be clear, I wouldn't wear leggings with a short or lid length top, it would be something that covers my derrière. They would be more for casual, popping to the shops, meeting a friend for coffee. I've seen a few that have been styled on instagram, with layered tops, long coats, shirts, etc

And for those that say leggings should only be worn to the gym, that's like saying trainers should only be worn in the gym

OP posts:
HouseAshamed · 21/02/2025 08:13

@theressomanytinafeysicouldbe , me neither, I'd feel like I'd left the house only in tights.

At the moment I’m wearing mine with these hoodies (Abercrombie hoodies and trainers

They look lovely but are they worth £60 for a plain hoody? Not a snarky comment genuinely interested in buying but don't want to waste money.

TheChosenTwo · 21/02/2025 11:23

I wear them with giant sweatshirts when I wfh.
And with a tshirt when I go to the gym but that doesn’t necessarily always cover my bum - I don’t care when I’m at the gym about the bum issue but I would always have it covered during a regular day.
i do mostly wfh but could wear them in the office too, it’s very informal. I wouldn’t wear them to a meeting, I’d stick on something a bit smarter.

Berlinlover · 21/02/2025 11:29

I haven’t worn leggings since I was 16 back in 1992. Whenever I see any adult woman wearing leggings I just assume she’s too lazy to dress herself properly.
