Stuck in a complete run with my wardrobe and need a bit of a refresh to look a bit more up to date.

Winter I live in skinny jeans and a roll neck with ankle or knee high boots or wellies

Summer, cropped trousers and a tunic type top, with flats or trainers (trainer socks!)

Not great on stuff being tight around my middle as apple shaped so can't get away with belts or tight waistbands.

Can anyone share some looks, ideally pictures so I can update a bit.

I checked with a few retailers, Everlane, Levi's and Zara. They all carried wide, straight and skinny jeans.

Do what works best for your body and your lifestyle. OP, go on a few websites and find a few looks that you like. Or really pay attention when you are out, or watching TV to see what others are wearing that you think look fashionable. Copy the whole outfit, not necessarily exactly, but within your budget and colour choices.

Ditto!!

Maybe if we stop wearing them and wear barrell ones or whatever, we'll become rich 🤑

boxyboxs · 01/02/2025 22:39

I know PPs were saying we shouldn’t even come on Style & Beauty if we’re not actually interested in what’s in fashion at the moment but I believe old fogies like me are duty bound to point out where current fashion is bloody horrible. I clicked on that shopping website posted earlier about stylish things we should be coveting and this is one of them

Those sites are just about aff links so they will put as much stuff up there as possible hoping to get a click & commission rather than actual style advice.

Overratedpose · 01/02/2025 22:52

Look in any major city and you'll see what's in and what's not. Definitely more fashionable to be in wide legged trousers and baggier, loose fitting tops than anything figure hugging. I say that as someone who utterly mourns the demise of skinny jeans as my legs are the only thing going for me and now I have to disguise them in baggy trousers. Also, look at news readers, TV show presenters, all in wide styles

BitOutOfPractice · 01/02/2025 23:01

I think my face is a much more reliable marker of my age than my jeans! 😬

You really don't have to ! Why do you think you HAVE to?

@TightPants in case @TimingOff doesnt come back to you I recently bought two pairs of these and my gosh they are SO good! The denim is amazing quality (like Japanese selvedge) and their straight leg jeans tailoring shape is INCREDIBLE. They are straight but slightly tapered so feel very ‘now’ after wide leg jeans and trousers. Not quite as fitting as skinnies with their typical stretch. High waist on me (5 4), site says size up and I would agree. And it’s a community company, all UK manufactured and made. And only £95 😳. I have 200£ and even 300£ jeans, they don’t get close to Community Clothing brand jeans.
https://communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-jeans/products/womens-straight-leg-mid-rise-jean?variant=44390274957589

if you want true straight, which are straight from hip (can feel slightly wide on me) then Levi’s 501s are the classic. But Community Straight still beats them hands down!

@SurferRona those jeans look great! Thanks for the link x

Yikes

It's a bit more Baby Jane a la Bette as opposed to Sister Jane 😂

Newposter180 · 02/02/2025 04:36

Sorry I personally think the glitter is really naff and wouldn’t guess those are quite expensive trainers. In a similar style maybe adidas gazelles/sambas? Or even a more plain version of what you posted without the glitz.

Misskittykat · 02/02/2025 07:42

cannaethink · 31/01/2025 12:17

Cropped wide legs are good for when it’s wet or muddy. I’ve got these Mango jeans which I wear with boots. Any boots that are slim on the ankle and that the jeans come down slightly lower than the top of the boot.
I’d stay away from glittery trainers.

What’s the sizing like on these please as I love them! Are they true to size? Thanks

TimingOff · 02/02/2025 08:12

TightPants · 01/02/2025 14:53

Where do you buy your straight leg jeans from @TimingOff ?

After some trial and error I found fat face Sutton work on my figure. They look just a tad wider on me than on the model. Levis midi cut were also flattering but a bit too narrow in my thighs. I have realised that I need the length to fully cover the top of my shoe to balance out the looseness.

BoudiccasBangles · 02/02/2025 09:16

Whoopsss · 31/01/2025 07:55

If you swap skinny jeans for non-see-through quality leggings in black or neutrals for the wellies/boots look that will already be better than skinnies..it's really a marker of age and wealth to be out in skinnies these days..

Age and wealth? What does that mean? Curious as I live in skinnies and wellies/knee boots.

BoudiccasBangles · 02/02/2025 09:29

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 31/01/2025 21:58

Honestly as someone who spends a lot of time outdoors the last thing I want to wear are my flared jeans as they would get wet and muddy! Leggings aren't as warm as jeans either, even expensive ones! As for expensive trainers, I've ruined so many by wearing them in a muddy field.

I also think it depends on where you live and what you do. Wide legged jeans traipsing around the countryside will look stupid, whereas skinny jeans and boots/wellies won't look out of place in Waitrose in the countryside.

Phew! Same here. I was worried I was making some huge sartorial gaffe.

Patterncarmen · 02/02/2025 09:36

I live in a rural area and wear black leggings with jumpers or fleeces in the winter and wellies or tall boots. Summer, looser cotton dresses with a denim jacket or leather jacket, and flats/sandals unless I’m in the garden digging then wellies and my Barbour jacket. But then again I don’t pay a lot of attention to what is on trend. I want to be comfortable and move unimpeded and not get muddy!

Of course you don't HAVE to but the whole premise of the thread is asking what's fashionable!

JackieGoodman · 02/02/2025 11:22

Haha "a marker of wealth" maybe in the city but definitely not in the country, you need slim or skinny jeans to go in your expensive boots Grin
Looking on google at Claudia outfits The Traitors, she definitely is wearing some skinnies, leggings at times but definitely skinny jeans, she looks fab (and v stylish)
But agree with what loads are saying, there's fashion and there's style, and these are not always the same.

Skinnies are back.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 02/02/2025 12:22

I used to work in buying MNs is somewhat behind the curve so a lot of the time the advice re fashion is a little behind.

Very much agree with @boxyboxs on this.

Was talking about jeans with a friend over dinner last week. Given she works for a huge denim brand, she knows. She said it's about straight leg jeans and slimmer fits. Skinny jeans, not so much, very little demand from the buyers. She said even the demand for barrel leg and wider fits isn't as high.

As for the posters talking about TikTok and other influencers, they're paid to push certain things. Just because they say skinny jeans or anything for that matter is in, it is not true.

latetothefisting · 02/02/2025 12:47

boxyboxs · 01/02/2025 14:28

nobody is putting a gun to your head to make you buy or wear anything you don't want to, but maybe just accept that on the 'style and beauty' boards people are going to be discussing and recommending specific trends. I don't understand why people come on asking what's fashionable/current then getting annoyed and defensive when someone responds and tells them!

I used to work in buying MNs is somewhat behind the curve so a lot of the time the advice re fashion is a little behind.

and?
I didn't say that every poster on the s&b board was a stylist for Vogue and completely up to date on the absolute newest styles, I said they are going to be interested in and discussing them so it's weird to pick this forum specifically to announce that you don't care what's fashionable and you're going to wear what you want.

Besides which, most people asking for advice on 'what's in' now want to know what NORMAL, everyday people like them are wearing currently, so they fit in with their friends and family - not what high-concept, unwearable trend fashion editors are predicting for next season.

MyCatNamedCookingFat · 02/02/2025 12:49

I think anything goes?

I was in dark skinnies the other day, with boots and a cape style jacket.
Quite a few compliments on my outfit.
The jacket needed a slimmer silhouette so wide legs would not have worked.

OP I think you should create a look book on Pinterest of styles you like and then see what you need to add to from the clothes you have already.

NewHeaven · 02/02/2025 15:36

Sainsbury's barrell leg jeans gives a slimmer wide leg silhouette without the excess fabric flapping around the ankles & getting muddy on wet days.

boxyboxs · 02/02/2025 16:09

@latetothefisting I think I confused you. I don't think anyone comes to MNs style board and expects this * high-concept, unwearable trend fashion editors are predicting for next season. It was more just explaining why there is often discrepancies in some of the answers on these types of threads!

boxyboxs · 02/02/2025 16:10

Besides which, most people asking for advice on 'what's in' now want to know what NORMAL, everyday people like them are wearing currently, so they fit in with their friends and family

And that again explains some of the discrepancies! Where you live, your age, your lifestyle will influence your fashion influences.
