Stuck in a complete run with my wardrobe and need a bit of a refresh to look a bit more up to date.

Winter I live in skinny jeans and a roll neck with ankle or knee high boots or wellies

Summer, cropped trousers and a tunic type top, with flats or trainers (trainer socks!)

Not great on stuff being tight around my middle as apple shaped so can't get away with belts or tight waistbands.

Can anyone share some looks, ideally pictures so I can update a bit.

The skinny jeans with boots and jumper look is back in according to tiktok, I wouldn't switch to leggings. Lots of people are wearing that look

Bey · 31/01/2025 12:37

Favourited a few pairs of barrel leg jeans on Vinted to try. What tops and trainers are we wearing with them? I'm 40 mum of toddler and a baby size 14-16 still a bit pp.

CharlotteCChapel · 31/01/2025 12:44

I'd really drop fashion to develop style. Even if style isn't fashionable it still says something about you.

Seaside3 · 31/01/2025 20:50

I'd move on from the idea of fashionable and look for your style. If fashion is your thing, then fair enough, but if not, then look for your style, what suits you and makes you feel good.

FreshEgg · 31/01/2025 20:55

This thread is hilarious. I had no idea I was broadcasting my wealth, or lack there of (?) with my skinny jeans 😆

XxSideshowAuntSallyx · 31/01/2025 21:58

Honestly as someone who spends a lot of time outdoors the last thing I want to wear are my flared jeans as they would get wet and muddy! Leggings aren't as warm as jeans either, even expensive ones! As for expensive trainers, I've ruined so many by wearing them in a muddy field.

I also think it depends on where you live and what you do. Wide legged jeans traipsing around the countryside will look stupid, whereas skinny jeans and boots/wellies won't look out of place in Waitrose in the countryside.

HÆLTHEPAIN · 31/01/2025 23:17

I wanted some Adidas Samba as I used to wear them when I was a teen/early 20’s, but I feel they make my feet look really long now so I got these instead and I love them! And they’re reasonably priced. They look really good with wide leg trousers. Length wise, I leave a bit of ankle showing. I’ve just sold a pair of white gazelles because I’m bored with plain white now!

@Ilovemyshed you could do this winter look if you wanted to wear black skinny jeans.

You do know this is just bog standard wear in certain places?

Crazykefir · 31/01/2025 23:47

Oh no I wore skinny jeans today😮

I live rurally, wouldn't dream of wearing nice trainers or wide legged trousers in the fields though, surely you just wear wellies and whatever tucked in to walk the dog etc

newrubylane · 01/02/2025 00:01

I've switched to cord leggings from M&S with my long boots and jumpers. Soft, comfy, work with that Claudia on Traitors vibe really well.

My jeans are a more relaxed shape (carrot rather than full barrel works best for me) - tuck or semi-tuck your top with these. Slim fit tops look more 'done', but you can get away with something more roomy for a casual look I think.

Visible socks with your trainers, in a pattern or colour that adds to the outfit, is a very current look and is actually practical too (keeps your ankles warm).

I reckon long skinny scarves are going to be making a comeback, and cardigans are too.

Consider Mary Jane ballerinas for spring.

With dresses/skirts swap your opaques for something slightly more sheer, and you want pointy kitten heels slingback shoes.

Shoulder bags rather than cross body are making a comeback (though I'm ignoring this for now as cross body is just so much more practical).

If you swap skinny jeans for non-see-through quality leggings in black or neutrals for the wellies/boots look that will already be better than skinnies..it's really a marker of age and wealth to be out in skinnies these days..

Nope

HothouseFlower · 01/02/2025 01:01

Skinny jeans are set to make a comeback in 2025. Along with bootlegs. And polka dots on tops/dresses.

I just read it on Who What Wear so it must be true!

Thornybush · 01/02/2025 08:00

Gosh I live in skinny jeans, I must be so uncool but I don't care. Specifically dark denim, nothing else😎
I hate all the other jeans that are around. I have young teenage family members and the "cool" jeans make their lovely figures seem huge. Also the light denim just doesn't go with much
Think I'll be sticking with my dark denim skinnies forever!

Apparently dark denim is in for 2025 as well as skinnies! You'll be the cool one!

TimingOff · 01/02/2025 11:56

I think everyone loves Claudia's looks on the Traitors because it a) suits her and is harmonious with her personal style and b) is weather and situation appropriate. Wide legs are ubiquitous now but look silly in wet, cold, outdoorsy contexts.

Back when skinnies were ubiquitous, I wore straight leg with stretch because they suited me better. Now I have realised that straight leg are still best for my style and lifestyle (and pairing with my collection of woolly jumpers), but I wear rigid cotton ones that don't cling to my thighs like my 2010s jeans.

Basically, try and updated version of what suits you and make sure it works with other items of clothing that feel like 'you'. If you swap over everything at once it will date quickly and you'll have go through this all again!

I love my skinny jeans - I’m quite tall with nice legs and want to show them off 😆 I’ve got some of the more fashionable shaped jeans and they just make me look a bit frumpy.

Hi OP, I think you are asking @Whoopsss , but as she explains - you asked how to be more fashionable, she replied. It is not because of Whoopss that they are more fashionable; they just are. That’s what fashion is - change.

I agree with @Whoopsss , if you like the skinny look, you need to change to posh leggings like Lululemon or Swetty Betty and sporty trainers or else wellies - à la Claudia in Traitors. If you don’t care about fashion, then you don’t need to do this. All are available on Vinted.

Personally, I moved on years ago and I haven’t worn leggings since lockdown, except to go for a run on a very cold day; but that’s just me - 12 months of living in leggings combined with WFH and homeschooling has left me with a residual hatred of them!!! Even though they are very practical!!!

agree
I saw another post on here - can't remember where sorry, basically querying why so many people come on the style and beauty board and get so angry about the existence of trends and things being 'in' and 'out'

if you don't care about what's on trend and just wear what you like/what looks good on you - great, good for you. Nobody else really cares. You don't have to come on and declare that you are 'sticking with your skinny jeans, I don't care what anyone else thinks,' as if you're rebelling against the Gestapo.

if you think the concept is just dreamed up by fashion designers and shops to get people to spend more money buying new stuff rather than re-wearing perfectly decent clothes, well, yeah, duh!

nobody is putting a gun to your head to make you buy or wear anything you don't want to, but maybe just accept that on the 'style and beauty' boards people are going to be discussing and recommending specific trends. I don't understand why people come on asking what's fashionable/current then getting annoyed and defensive when someone responds and tells them!

I used to work in buying MNs is somewhat behind the curve so a lot of the time the advice re fashion is a little behind.

Where do you buy your straight leg jeans from @TimingOff ?

Ooooh which core leggings are those @newrubylane? I’m after some so a recommendation would be great

Is it? I know skinnies aren’t bang on trend any more but not sure how they relate to wealth or age - or is it only being ‘out’ that’s an issue. Will someone still look poor if they wear them round the house?

Yes. If you open the door to your massive posh house to the pizza guy and you're wearing skinnies, he will call the police and report there's been a break in.
