Stuck in a complete run with my wardrobe and need a bit of a refresh to look a bit more up to date.

Winter I live in skinny jeans and a roll neck with ankle or knee high boots or wellies

Summer, cropped trousers and a tunic type top, with flats or trainers (trainer socks!)

Not great on stuff being tight around my middle as apple shaped so can't get away with belts or tight waistbands.

Can anyone share some looks, ideally pictures so I can update a bit.

What age are you? height? size?

I'm sorry but this is old lady on a seaside trip outfit, MN mentions tunic tops regularly and it makes me shudder 🤣

I like skinny jeans but they have been out for over 5 years and if you still wear them it looks like you haven't shopped in 5+ years. You know when someoje was locked up for so long and they emerge on release with their old but not quite vintage yet clothes? It's like that 🤣
Skinny jeans and jeggings have different fabric and stitching so it's not like leggings..the leggings also can't be cheap polyester stuff and definitely no baggy around knees or ankles which some jeggings have.
Fashion is frivolous and relies on consumerism 🤷‍♀️ you can ignore it and march to the beat of your own drum but I just commented in light of mainstream current taste. I personally think skinny jeans make more sense in UK's cold and rainy weather but it's not fashionable so next best thing is sporty, more expensive leggings.

I think this is rubbish. If you look around and look at what is sold in shops, skinnies are still in abundance.

Yousay55 · 02/02/2025 17:00

I just bought some m&s high rise skinny jeans and I love them! They were greatly reduced (£10) as they’re not in fashion anymore. My teen dc say they’re not too bad. I guess they’ll hopefully be back in fashion one day!

Lolopolo · 02/02/2025 17:25

I love skinny jeans and never stopped wearing black ones. I’m skinny with good legs and they look nice on me. I couldn’t give a toss what the fashion is.

I also hate tunic tops and cropped trousers, whether that's jeans or any other form of trouser.

Cropped trousers are very difficult to wear if you have short legs or just average legs. I look stumpy in cropped trousers because even though I'm 5ft6 I have short legs and a long body.

Agreed. I'm also 5' 6" but long in the body and I have lipodema so even at my normal size 10 (which currently I am not but working on it!) my legs are heavy. Cropped trousers look absolutely awful on me. Hitting or cuffed to around my ankle bone or just above looks much better.

If you swap skinny jeans for non-see-through quality leggings in black or neutrals for the wellies/boots look that will already be better than skinnies..it's really a marker of age and wealth to be out in skinnies these days..

LEGGINGS are back in??😱

SwizzelsDoubleLollies · 02/02/2025 18:08

It doesn't matter how much some women go on about skinnies being out of date if a women has good legs and bum she is going to look lovely in skinnies and knee high boots.

I prefer wearing trainers with my wider leg jeans.

Agree with this. For most, they will continue to wear what suits their shape (and lifestyle) rather than whatever the fashion press/influencers/whatever are touting as the next big thing.

I prefer a rounder jean and trouser, something higher waisted, wide in the hip, loose in the thigh, tapered at the ankle. This is currently sold as barrel-legged, sometimes as carrot-legged, occasionally as a baggy mom jeans. This shape is also something my mother wore thirty years ago. Back then, I don't think it even had a name but was pretty ubiquitous in her wardrobe and where she shopped.

There's only so many cuts one can do with any piece of clothing. The style remains variations of the same things, only the names change.

Spondon · 02/02/2025 18:27

I also want to know about it. Can you give more details about it?

Skinny jeans never went away in real terms and now making a comeback. They are in all the shops at the moment

Garlicworth · 02/02/2025 18:37

Well, that's me sorted for next autumn 😂

I do get frustrated with these threads sometimes. It’s the Style and Beauty board - it’s not an unreasonable question to ask on here, ffs, it’s not AIBU - but it always gets derailed by comments along the lines of “well I’ll still wear skinnies whatever fashion says” or “lol look at this ridiculous thing on the catwalk” or “find your own style OP!” Threads like this always wind up with just a few posters actually giving useful info for those of us who’d like to get a sense of what’s current because we live somewhere where people are mostly wearing black puffa jackets and leggings.

Perfectlystill · 02/02/2025 21:08

Agree with the PP. I cannot bear the disingenuous posters who come on here and say 'but you really don't HAVE to follow fashion', as if they're speaking to someone who is hard of thinking. The superiority!

People (myself included) come on here because they enjoy looking vaguely current, without going for the Vogue furry eggcup look posted above.

This does not make them serial killers or desperately insecure losers to be pitied. They know they are free to plait their armpit hair, wear Primark skinnies from 2016, or wear head to toe Loro Piana, if they have the means.

If you are so keen to bestow aid on the genuinely needy, go and help in a soup kitchen. The rest of us just want to know if our glittery trainers make us look dated (sorry OP but I think they do).

SwizzelsDoubleLollies · 02/02/2025 21:32

I would say glittery trainers over the age of 5 are a no no.

My very trendy and glamorous SD wears all sorts of things. I have seen her in skinnies with boots, baggy jeans and cropped tops, short skirts and boots. She carries them off because she is young with a good figure.

Surely as you get older you learn to know what suits you. There are loads of magazines out there with fashion in. I also tend to look at what some celebrities are wearing.

I do have a big interest in clothes and follow women on TikTok and Instagram who I think dress nice and give good advice.

I don't try and copy what the young ones are wearing but I do take note what is terribly out of fashion.

SwizzelsDoubleLollies · 02/02/2025 21:34

It's quite lazy to come on here and ask the question. Do some proper research.

happytobemrsg · 02/02/2025 21:36

I’m currently revamping my wardrobe as I’m returning to work after maternity leave shortly. I’m planning on some comfy wide leg trousers (drawstring from Zara or something else with an elastic back) & layers in my colours (vital for my office) such as good quality cotton T-shirts, chunky cardigans, oversized blazers. Will also have a mass jeans try on & hopefully get some wide leg jeans & a straight/cropped pair. I actually find looser jeans more flattering than skinnies (I’m a size 10/12). My favourite trainers are On Cloud but will try & branch out to something pointy or some Mary-Jane’s (so long as they are comfy!!). Might upgrade my black satin midi skirt if I can figure out how to wear it casually.

SwizzelsDoubleLollies · 02/02/2025 21:52

I find the footwear dictates what jeans I'm wearing.

I like trainers, lighter coloured chunky ankle boots and higher heels look good with wider legged jeans/trousers. I would never wear these with skinny jeans these days.

I have just bought sone lovely tanned knee high boots and some navy skinnies which I think suit me.

I love blazers too.

I am early 50's though so I'm not trying to look like my trendy DSD. Just things that suit me. Slim with big boobs.

RockStarMartini · 02/02/2025 22:02

Surely asking on here is doing the research? It’s much more realistic to talk with a bunch of similar-minded (mostly) women than read what some influencer or journalist says which is likely to be biased.

I don't agree. There is lots more out there than Mumsnet. If I wanted proper relationship advice I would not just come here. I'd go to professionals. The advice is terrible on here sometimes.

I mean the whole skinny jeans argument is so amusing. It's how you wear them and if you have the figure to carry them off.

Ffs, there's always one. If you don't have anything remotely sensible to say then why say anything, oh superior (in your own mind) one.

Well that’s MN dead then!

What a stupid post.

The OP thought that she might get some advice from women of s similar age / shape / mindset / budget as herself.

What constitutes “proper research” in your book?

Easipeelerie · 03/02/2025 09:51

When I swapped from skinny jeans to baggy jeans, I noticed how much colder I felt. So still wear the skinnies for walks, days out to the beach etc. I wear them with fur lined brown DMs (Leonor) and I’d eat my hat if any one out on their walk looked at me and thought, ‘she’s a bit dated’.

I found them cold too! Everyone I know wears wide legged though so I can't quite bring myself to wear skinnies still. So hope they make a proper comeback as opposed to just on the pages of Vogue!
