Is this dress a bit dated?

I like it but am aware that apparently floral dresses have “had their day”. I am in my 40s so probably fat face target audience

Don’t know if any of these brands (as opposed to these particular dresses) would appeal?

Pink City Prints

Hill House Home

Day Dress

Colenimo

Justine Tabak

Wear what you want!?
If it looks good on you then what's the problem. Everything looks different on different people, if you like the way it looks& way makes you feel then that's all that matters.
Age as far as I'm concerned has nothing to do with anything!!

👏🏼
I will never understand how the S&B boards become so full of people who consider themselves above discussing S&B.

it's so odd
I wouldn't dream of jumping onto the home dec forum and saying 'Who cares if grey walls and metro shower tiles are dated, decorate your house how you'd like,' and expect everyone to bow down at my amazing insight
Nor would I go onto the 'doghouse' board and tell everyone how horrible dogs are and how stupid they are for owning them, because guinea pigs are much better.
But apparently s&b attracts these people who decide that it's the perfect place to announce that trends aren't real and anyone who has an interest in following them are gormless fools who are being conned by fashion marketing

There's no need for people to announce loudly how crazy and radical they are for continuing to wear skinny jeans because they like them (or whatever other clothing choice they make) at all, because literally nobody cares, but of all the places to decide express such a non-opinion, S&B is particularly weird...

Well I’m sat here……in a floral dress 😆. I’m going to work and I’ve put a thin navy jumper over the top with black opaque tights. This dress has a navy background with yellow, blue and very pale pink flowers.

I've dressed similarly today but instead of opaque tights I've got Doc Martens on and slouch socks! Dress is long though so you can't see them. I'm more or less on my own for the day, no meetings or anything so it doesn't matter. But I look fine. I think.

quoque · 05/02/2025 14:15

All the stuff about dated/on trend aside (you'd hardly be on the FatFace website in the first place if you were a 28 year old avant garde gallery director in Berlin), the print is sweet but the horrible twisty bit on the sternum is ghastly and will make your boobs look weird. It's too fussy and I think would look weirdly "modest" on. A simple row of tiny fabric covered buttons would have been prettier.

Edited to add: Sorry OP! I was v late to this thread, and see now that you have literally just pointed this out about the neckline! 😳

CerealPosterHere · 04/02/2025 14:32

Well I didn’t like it. Material was ok just the fit. It sat on my hips unflatteringly and the knot bit on the chest was odd.

I decided not to add an opinion given the majority of posters were positive & I got the feeling you really liked it. I can be honest now & say I think it's awful 😂

princessperky · 06/02/2025 08:13

I'm your mum's generation. I don't like it at all. You can do much better than that! I read that '90's fashion is back. Do have a peep. BTW, my uniform is skinny jeans with jumpers/t-shirts so perhaps I'm not the best judge. My summer dresses are much more fitted and a bit shorter and I do agree that the pattern and colour of this one is insipid at best. Good wishes

thegirlwithemousyhair · 06/02/2025 10:15

I'm not a fan of florals but looks like a perfectly nice summer dress to me.

I do wish MNHQ could spare a couple of seconds to enable all posters on the app as well as the mobile site to highlight the OP’s posts …

Fionuala · 07/02/2025 15:48

not dated at all. as a summer dress it is a classic one - beautiful

Spriterat · 07/02/2025 18:45

If you like it and feel good wearing it that is all that matters. I have some dresses that I love but know you get people wouldn’t look at - I don’t care! I think I look good and therefore - I do 😂
I think it is a great dress xx

Newname1989 · 07/02/2025 19:55

I don’t think it’s very stylish OP. Nothing to do with it not being on trend or anyone’s age , rather the cut of the dress looks a bit frumpy to me and I think it may only suit very slim people.

I fully admit I shouldn't be such a sheep and shouldn't care. Seen too many posts/tiktok videos sniggering at middle aged women wearing floral dresses and denim jackets and saying its like a middle aged, middle class uniform so guess I am consciously trying to step away from being such a cliche.

I do like the overall look of the dress/fabric though. Bit unsure about the slight "tier" in the skirt section so will see what it looks like on. I agree it seems quite a multi function dress, work, lunch with friends, go to the pub, etc.

Sniggering at middle aged woman is just a sexist/ageist sport, so I personally don’t think you should give in to worrying about it

It’s a nice dress and quite flexible

I don’t think florals are going anywhere and I often see young women in then albeit usually skirts

SonK · 09/02/2025 10:37

I would wear this and I m late 20s

I would style it with chunky strappy sandals or converse trainers.

TubeScreamer · 09/02/2025 13:43

I think it’s nice, but I am 50s and not the coolest!

BreatheAndFocus · 09/02/2025 13:52

It’s fine (although I don’t like the V neck or the pattern) 😊 I like floral dresses and have done since my early 20s (more than 20 years ago). IMO, the trick is choosing the right pattern and cut.

I think floral dresses are pretty timeless. I wear them to casual and smart occasions, and to work too.

Shock horror - I also wear skinny jeans. That’s because I hate the baggy ones and because they look best on my shape. All this ‘what’s in fashion this week’ crap is just to make women paranoid and to keep the market going. Some things are classic, and I think the floral dress is one of them.

No ..I personally aren't keen on the print as it's peachy but depending on your skin tone I think it's very nice..Check outbid you're from the UK the Seasalt clothing official shop in EBay UK I've had dressed very similar for £16 with a £80 label still on them

Yousay55 · 09/02/2025 19:06

What is the fashionable look for someone in their 40s if not floral dresses, denim jackets, leopard print, white trainers and skinny jeans. Asking for a friend who has clearly lost her way …

MsWintertowne · 09/02/2025 19:25

Are you new to to theMN Style & Beauty board, @Yousay55?

Loads of threads to explore, if so.

maxybrown · 11/02/2025 10:54

Well I've just seen it in town and I really like it! Not sure I'd get my bazookas in it but would try 😂

Ghoststorying · 11/02/2025 11:17

MsWintertowne · 30/01/2025 14:21

Who tells people what to wear, @Winterskyfall?

As far as I can see, most people dress as if they live in the 2020s - because those are the sort of clothes available to buy in shops and even pre-owned.

A few people make a deliberate effort to dress as if they live in some previous century. No one stops them, though some of the garments may prove a little impractical.

But the UK is a relatively free country. Other than a uniform I think everyone can choose what they wear? I’d be interested to hear how you manage to distinguish yourself from all your fellow humans buying the ‘trends’ of the era?
