Is this dress a bit dated?

I like it but am aware that apparently floral dresses have “had their day”. I am in my 40s so probably fat face target audience

If you like it buy it, wear it. Who cares what anyone else thinks?

I am older than 40s, but I've always followed my own style. I've always received compliments on what I wear, my hair etc. I love floral designs, colours etc. IMO, the dress is too loose to be stylish, as it looks shapeless. The looseness at the top, doesn't fit with the longer length. So a shapeless too long dress. It would look better if it stopped on the knee. Yep! Frumpy. I am sorry, it's just my opinion.

Floral dresses are timeless.

However, the dropped waist on that is awful, I don't know why designers put that extra hem in, it is such an unflattering cut. It makes the body look long, belly look fat and legs look short. The colours are really wishy washy and naff too.

What is the fashionable look for someone in their 40s if not floral dresses, denim jackets, leopard print, white trainers and skinny jeans. Asking for a friend who has clearly lost her way …

I’m in my 40’s and I’ve swapped skinny jeans for straight leg, I have both more relaxed and slimmer fit, and I think they’re more flattering on my shape than going back to 90’s boot cut. I wear lots of simple jumpers.. think soft knits and unstructured shapes. I also like a white shirt layered under a sleeveless jumper. Dresses wise, I have a couple of mini sweater dresses (I usually wear over thick black tights and black converse baseball boots). A denim midi skirt is a good choice. Or for a change, a jumper tucked into a longish pleated skirt.
I still love my trainers. Nike / New Balance / Adidas are all good brands. I avoid bright white, and I think Vega’s are considered quite mumsy.
I’m around lots of young students day to day, and I often get compliments from them, so while I might not be high fashion, I figure I must be doing something right!

The day shops stop filling the rails with hideous floral prints & just as bad the eyesore geometric prints won't be a day too soon.

I definitely wouldnt wear with a denim jacket or white trainers, that specific look was popular around 10 years ago, if you dont want to look dated i would avoid this.

The dress is fine though, very school run/hanging round the house style.

What's the now version of that look do you think?

Barrel leg trousers are very in currently so will probably date at some point.

I still like a floral dress with white (or old school) trainers and a denim jacket. I've been wearing variations on this since the early 90s and am not stopping now!

80smonster · 13/02/2025 23:51

Dated to my eye. I often feel bold florals can wear the wearer.

Pinkmagic1 · 13/02/2025 23:59

I think it looks a little frumpy, but that could just be the way it's styled with them sandals.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 15/02/2025 18:47

Actually, I think those dresses are timelees. It's the shoes and how you style it that makes it now. Do it your way, love it and you will look great.

Araminta1003 · 15/02/2025 19:41

I agree - the dress is fine, the sandals are not. Go onto the Boden website and look at how they pair the dresses with boots, certain necklaces and bracelets and bags and that is what makes all the difference. It is never about the dress alone, as long as it actually fits your body shape well. I couldn’t wear that dress, lacking in cup size.

Mrsgreen100 · 15/02/2025 20:28

I’m 59 and would find it bit ageing tbh
maybe with a short boot or trainers
but only if you are on the thin side tbh
sorry op

Id wear it. Id team with white camisole top so you can see lacey bit in the v...a long lace petticoat so can see hem at bottom of dress, id wear cowboy boots or gladiator sandals with it and natural wooden jewellery or silver

I’ve got brown birkis I could wear with it or green and pink adidas specizals. Got a nice quilted Mint velvet jacket which might work, or a bright pink cardigan if too warm for a jacket. I was half joking on the denim jacket and trainers as I know that would not be a trendy look overall.

This sounds lovely and not frumpy at all. The print on the fat face dress is lovely

Winterskyfall · 30/01/2025 14:09

I think it's lovely but I don't follow trends. I wear what I like and I really don't care what's 'in' or 'out'. Personally, I think dressing to trends should be dated, people should have their own individual style and not be told what to wear. I'm not particularly helpful considering your question. 😉

It could look amazing with pale colouring.

Totally agree.

I didn't realise floral dresses were out so I've learned something today😁I don't mind that dress but not a massive fan of the shape. But then I tend to find everything in FF is a bit shapeless on me so I never shop there.

They’re not, they’ve been around so long they’re neither in nor out.

MrsMullers · 18/02/2025 11:16

Have you tried looking on Free People, or Anthropology? They’re that similar boho vibe but in my opinion just have a little more edge.

Marioche · 01/04/2025 17:08

Ok if you are 6ft tall. Just saying..
I couldn't carry it off as I'm only 5ft 1. And a half lol
