Is this dress a bit dated?

I like it but am aware that apparently floral dresses have “had their day”. I am in my 40s so probably fat face target audience

Do you like it? If you do - buy it, if you don’t, don’t. Sod everyone else, dress for yourself and what makes you happy x

Majesticalling · 02/02/2025 22:10

I get what you mean OP, lovely colour and pattern but it does look like it could have frump potential. If the colours work for you and with the right sandals and accessories it could look great...For me I would size up and go massively chunky with shoes/sandals or really simple single-strap flats. I

I still have a ditsy long floral dress that I bought in Debenhams in 1995 or 1996. Still wear it! 😁. I get complimented every time I wear it, it has spaghetti straps and I wear a fitted tight tshirt under it. It’s very 90s dated but kind of retro now. I’d have been 18 or 19 when I bought it.

I am impressed you are in your 40s but can still fit into something you bought when you were 18.

blueshoes · 02/02/2025 22:52

The first model's legs looked bruised around the ankles. Slightly worrying.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/02/2025 05:20

Who says floral dresses have had their day? What rubbish. Obviously the 'in' styles and colours will change over time, but I can't ever remember a time when floral dresses of some sort were not in favour.

I don't think it's dated at all, I really like it actually.

MummyJ36 · 03/02/2025 07:44

I’m in my late 30s and I really really like it!!

Northumberlandgirl · 03/02/2025 07:54

I hope that style lasts forever. It’s pretty and comfortable. I want to keep wearing trainers with it too. Then again I’m 72 and my days of being edgy are long gone and I’m much too sensible to wear something just because it’s fashionable. The current carrot leg jeans come to mind.

Easipeelerie · 03/02/2025 09:25

It’s a bit frumpy but in the fabric’s favour, it’s a very rare example of something a ‘true spring’ (in seasonal colour analysis) could wear. It’s really, really hard to find clothes that suit this sort of colouring and even more so, patterned clothes.

On the one hand these dresses are supposed to be dated as they’re vintage inspired; on the other I nearly didn’t buy a dress 25 years ago as I thought floral chic had had its day. Still wearing it now.

Cherrysoup · 03/02/2025 13:21

I'm head to foot bright pink today, couldn't really give a stuff what people think. I have had a recent conversion to colour co-ordinated outfits-blue, green, pink, bright orange-I apparently look like a highlighter. Normally I'm in sober jackets/trousers. Go for the dress, it's lovely.

MsWintertowne · 30/01/2025 14:21

Who tells people what to wear, @Winterskyfall?

As far as I can see, most people dress as if they live in the 2020s - because those are the sort of clothes available to buy in shops and even pre-owned.

A few people make a deliberate effort to dress as if they live in some previous century. No one stops them, though some of the garments may prove a little impractical.

But the UK is a relatively free country. Other than a uniform I think everyone can choose what they wear? I’d be interested to hear how you manage to distinguish yourself from all your fellow humans buying the ‘trends’ of the era?

Edited

I enjoyed this comment tremendously.

Aintnobodygottime · 03/02/2025 14:24

I can't do midi length at all and will be thrilled when it ends. I also suit plain lines so the current seemingly endless trend of flounced/tiered/puffed clothes at a length that looks awful on me can't be done quickly enough. But it does still seem to be on offer in the shops. If it suits you and you like it, then enjoy and wear it!

SereneCapybara · 03/02/2025 14:24

That cut was around last summer a lot, and has been around on Nobody's Child dresses for about 5 years or more.

I think of it as a fairly classic tea-dress shape. Personally I adore this shape of dress. It is flattering, feminine, cool in summer, easy to move around it and very versatile. You can go for a walk, go out to lunch or pick up kids from school and not look over or under-dressed in it.

Have you ever asked yourself who decides what is "dated"? Generally someone with a vested interest, who wants us to buy new clothes, and everyone follows along like sheep. Personally I stopped worrying about things being "dated" when I left my teens.

As for But it's a bit weird to come on the forum specifically called style and beauty and somehow pretend that trends don't exist and people aren't aware of them. As I said in my earlier post, style and trends are NOT the same thing.

Maybe the audience knows a bit more than you.

are you honestly declaring "someone with a vested interest in getting you to spend money decides what's new" as if it's some hitherto never expressed genius philosophy 😂

next you'll be patronisingly explaining "you do know trends are all made up by fashion designers, don't you?"

I don't think anyone assumes that new trends magically emerge out of thin air into the general consciousness. Of course it's all engineered to get people to spend more money - just like literally every other form of entertainment, media, decoration and consumerism.

There's a difference between worrying about things being dated and refusing to accept it as a concept. If you don't care about your clothes being bang up to date, great, good for you, carry on.
But pretending that not caring about what's in fashion and just wearing what you like, is some sort of novel concept that only you are clever and superior enough to adopt, rather than something most of the population does to some degree or another, and insulting anyone who does have an interest as being 'a sheep' is pretty ridiculous and unpleasant behaviour.

And as for your other point, OED literally lists 'styles' as a synonym for 'trends' so....

Well, my dress has arrived!! (or rather dresses - ordered 2 for size choice).

Sadly, I'm going to send them back.

Fabric is slightly textured in a lineny way, nice and soft but prone to creasing. I'm not finding it see-through (I think a previous poster said they found it too transparent).

I needed to size down one size from my normal size (this often seems to happen with Fatface).

Colours are perfect for me (I am pale, freckly, slightly gingery).

The drapey bit at the front looks a bit weird and fussy.

It's almost a very nice dress, but it's just a bit too much on the frumpy and lumpy side for me. Obviously I am supplying most of the lumpiness myself. But I feel like it's not quite fashionable enough on the one hand, but not quite classic enough on the other.

Just my personal view...

Thanks. I can’t be doing with ironing so not looking promising 😁

The funny thing about John Lewis’s announcement, the other year, that floral midi dresses were finished, is that I’d never bought one in my life. I always wore trousers except for parties/ beachwear.

But when that announcement got into the news, I thought “Oh, those actually look quite nice, and cool in the summer. Time to try something different”.

I now have a small collection of charity-shop floral midi dresses. So thanks, John Lewis, for bringing them to my attention!

I will never understand how the S&B boards become so full of people who consider themselves above discussing S&B.

MySweetGeorgina · 03/02/2025 22:41

I know.

it’s people who occasionally drop in on the board to call everyone “sheep”, to confirm to themselves they are unique and different and special, unlike shallow people who care about style, fashion or beauty 😁☺️

Pumpkincozynights · 04/02/2025 07:47

Well I’m sat here……in a floral dress 😆. I’m going to work and I’ve put a thin navy jumper over the top with black opaque tights. This dress has a navy background with yellow, blue and very pale pink flowers.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 04/02/2025 12:23

I don't think it's "dated" as such. It's not high fashion, but it's a style that there are always some people wearing, and it's certainly not boring or frumpy. It's romantic/slightly boho, and if that's your style then it's right for you.

CerealPosterHere · 04/02/2025 14:32

Well I didn’t like it. Material was ok just the fit. It sat on my hips unflatteringly and the knot bit on the chest was odd.

pictoosh · 04/02/2025 17:37

Sorry your dress wasn't what you were looking for OP. Online shopping is an absolute pain.

Personally speaking I think it's great when someone comes along to remind everyone that 'style' is your own, 'beauty' is subjective...and it's ok not to follow fashion fads and/or still like items/outfits after they have fallen out of current favour.
I'm not saying that because I think I'm above posting in style and beauty but because it's true.

DisforDarkChocolate · 04/02/2025 17:38

I like it a lot, especially the crossed bit at the front. I may treat myself.

It’s quite “sticky outy” /lumpy in real life….the crossed bit. If it had sat flatter it would have been fine.
