How many winter coats do you have?

For as long as I can remember I have always had a smart wool coat and a casual water resistant puffer style as the absolute minimum. Right now I also have a fleece jacket, a waterproof poncho and a ridiculously impractical but joyful jacket thing.
I need to replace my wool coat and my husband is surprised that I need to and that I can’t rely on what I have. (He’s not being a d*ck and I don’t need to LTB). For context I do hybrid working and do need to look smart often but not always, I also like to wear a smart coat if I am wearing a nice outfit for dinner etc.
So… how does this benchmark and am I being excessive??!

So many replies! Those of you with loads, do you tend to reach for one or do you actively rotate or match each one to your outfits?
Someone upthread said that if you are into style and beauty you will have to have lots of coats. I have to politely disagree, I am in to style and beauty but my circumstances mean that I can’t have loads of coats at one time. Every time I need a new one I spend a lot of time assessing what is in my current wardrobe and what coat will compliment the most things.

Honestly, despite all my lovely coats, I spent all last winter with a thin, hip length Mountain Equipment (£4.99, charity shop!) raincoat over whatever I was wearing. It was not at all Stylish or Beautiful.

It's looking really battered now but it was really useful so I definitely a new one. But I can't bring myself to pay 'real' Mountain Equipment prices so I have been shopping for about a month. (And bought two other coats which may or may not stay... 🤣)

My other regular is a brown Sherwood Forest coat. Love this one and it looks great with most things but it's seriously warm!

@Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain yes, love a bit of Vinted! I think the thing that's tricky about finding a coat there is it's difficult to know without trying it on whether it'll look good or too dressing gown-y. The oversized/cocoon coat trend swamps me (I'm 5' 3"); I tried this Whistles one last year and nearly bought it, so might go back for it this winter in a petite fit.

@MotherWol I agree, I'm shorter than that and you are right, some can drown you whereas others fit just fine on the shoulders. I must get in the habit of asking people for the measurements when the coat is done up. I have bought one that wasn't right this year but I sold it on immediately and the person loved it. Last year both the ones I bought on Vinted fitted just fine.

Nice wool coat
Light summer coat
Dog walking / work waterproof coat
Old dog walking coat
Old Barbour

I would like an evening/ going out coat to cover all occasions.

I’d love to see the homemade “hippy unique” jacket

I'm in bed now but will try and remember to do a photo of it in the next day or so!

louderthan · 23/09/2024 21:12

Oh god at least 12. That's including light rain macs but not counting coats I wear hiking or to the stables.

NicoleSkidman · 23/09/2024 21:16

Black wool coat
Insulated parka
Practical outdoorsy waterproof
Leather jacket
3x gillets
Light summer coat
Ski jacket

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 23/09/2024 22:10

Long green wool coat
Long grey wool coat
Long oatmeal wool coat
Knee length cream trench
Long cream trench
Black trench
White trench
Cashmere tan coat

Actually I'm bored now, but I have 32 coats which is ridiculous.
In my defence, years ago I worked at a Barbour outlet store. We were allowed to buy any coat (and as many as we liked) for a fiver. I was even given a £600 leather utility jacket for nothing.
It would have been rude not to stock up on a lifetime supply wouldn't it 😀

Princessfluffy · 24/09/2024 05:37

A Didrikson that mumsnet made me buy a few years back. It's NEVER been cold enough to wear it!!!
Three Seasalt winter raincoats, planning to sell two of them.
Four faux furs in different colours incl a long dark leopard mob wife one 😜 - one of these is on my sell pile
Three Uniqlo down jackets in different colours
A bright red wool coat
A red stripe wool coat
A corduroy coat
A leopard print quilted jacket and 2 reversible quilted jackets
3 denim jackets including a bright orange one
3 packable rain Macs in different patterns
Plus one or two more jackets that I'm planning to sell. Planning to keep 15 in total which to me seems reasonable.
Out of season stuff is under my bed. A few kept in entrance hall. Rest in my bedroom.

OP knock yourself out! I bought 5 new coats/jackets for autumn winter this year on the themes of red/leopard. All via Vinted.

CherryValley5 · 24/09/2024 05:39

An everyday one, a dog walking one and two fancier ones for special occasions or nights out etc

I wear a different coat depending on what I'm wearing underneath!
Also depending what I'm doing.

Going out for dinner, going out for lunch, going to work, watching the kids play rugby etc....

DaphneduM · 25/09/2024 20:33

Mine are from a mixture of sources - some new, some bought secondhand.
Long black wool L K Bennett (bought new from their outlet)
Long black wool with navy facings Mulberry (bought new from their outlet)
Animal print - black and beige - M and S sale
Animal print - blue, grey and black - T K Maxx
Pale green herringbone wool duffel coat - T K Maxx
Long wool mix mulberry colour coat (bought new)
Pink boucle coat (bought new) - Primark
Long grey check wool coat - new but from charity shop
Long M and S dark brown wool coat - charity shop
Double breasted navy wool coat - charity shop
Black wool and alpaca knee length coat - Vinted
Dark brown leather coat - Vinted
Cream leather coat - Oxfam
My favourite coat of all - long double breasted black and white herringbone wool/alpaca/mohair vintage coat - Gianfranco Corneli - made in Italy - bought from Vinted for the princely sum of £16 inc. postage.

(Off topic but I've just treated myself to all the colours of M and S wide legged cords to wear with these coats - they're surprisingly good quality and a bit of a change from jeans)!!!! They also fit well.

DGPP · 25/09/2024 21:47

I have 17! And wear them all. Love a coat

Comefromaway · 25/09/2024 21:51

Three

an old Trespass coat that I thought I’d lost at a school fayre (I was volunteering) so I bought a replacement then it turned up at the end of the year. I wear it for dog walking/gardening/caravanning etc

a Barbour black long puffs style coat with a hood for wearing in the rain/snow/wind. Bought it in the sale. It’s really warm & practical.

a gorgeous navy Max Mara long wool coat I’ve only just bought (bargain from Europe due to exchange rate & claming tax back. It will be my going out winter coat.

Ive got other coats but they are spring/summer/autumn coats. They are my trenchcoat, my leather jacket & my white denim jacket. Plus a zip up fleece with my football team on.

KeebabSpider · 25/09/2024 22:08

Red knee length wool coat
Navy knee length wool coat
Long black wool
long navy wool
Smart black rain coat
wax jacket
long grey smart coat
long black velvet coat
Navy wool oversized coat
Three velvet knee length
Two fur coats (rabbit, vintage yonks old).
Several jackets various colours

Most of my clothes are vintage or second hand so I don't feel too bad about having too many coats and some I've had for years. My favourite navy blue coat was bought 8 years ago I've worn it every year. Storage is ok, sorted....I don't own a single hoodie, track suit, leggings, loungeware or fleecy thing.

HarpyBirthday · 25/09/2024 22:22

Just 1. An esprit puffer style just below hip length, but a nice shape. And v warm in winter.

Am short and don't suit long coats imo.

fernsandlilies · 25/09/2024 22:30

About 15, they fall into categories;

  • smart/work/urban - some wool, some waterproof
  • dog walking/hiking - waterproof of different lengths and weights and a filthy one for gardening
  • casual but not so outdoorsy.

My wool/cashmere coats are all second hand, mostly from vintage shops, and I have lovely vintage jackets that I don’t class as coats. I wear them all.

IncessantNameChanger · 25/09/2024 22:38

I have at least 6. Two puffas / parkas, four really nice wool ones, a few ropey wool ones. Two rain macs. I think it's too much and takes up too much storage so I'm trying to reduce that number. My main coat is worn out now and I'm going to try to wear the rest till death as well and recycle them. I have one amazing Joe Brown coat and I'm trying keep that as my smarter coat as it's victorian style and timeless.

Having lots of bulky coats is fine if you have the space to store them.

EveryDayisFriday · 25/09/2024 22:46

I have 2 winter coats, a warm long puffer coat and a waterproof lined with fleece.
I have a gilet that comes out in decent weather and I've just bought a softshell jacket which is nice and light.
All in Navy, it's my favourite coat colour.

dudsville · 25/09/2024 22:52

I have 4 winter coats! 2 long wool, 1 short wool, and a parka. It's almost never cold enough for the parka, the other 3 get lots of use and I wanted the variety of colours. I remember being a kid and having one coat and it never went with anything. That's fine of course, but I do love my coats now!

Redglitter · 25/09/2024 22:54

None. I dont go walks etc & absolutely hate wearing a coat driving

Copperoliverbear · 25/09/2024 23:27

Powderblue1 · 26/09/2024 03:47

I'm with you OP. I love a good coat and always need a smart one for certain occasions. I have one smart woolen, 3x puffers (although thinking of giving one to my sister), 2x parkas and just bought a heritage style autumn jacket to go with jeans and Chelsea boots.
