How many winter coats do you have?

For as long as I can remember I have always had a smart wool coat and a casual water resistant puffer style as the absolute minimum. Right now I also have a fleece jacket, a waterproof poncho and a ridiculously impractical but joyful jacket thing.
I need to replace my wool coat and my husband is surprised that I need to and that I can’t rely on what I have. (He’s not being a d*ck and I don’t need to LTB). For context I do hybrid working and do need to look smart often but not always, I also like to wear a smart coat if I am wearing a nice outfit for dinner etc.
So… how does this benchmark and am I being excessive??!

Black for funerals
Shearling for cold weather
Tweed for everyday
Posh tweed for socialising
Duvet coat for general running around
Think I'll buy a camel coat this year

Black for many reasons but for funerals? How many funerals do you go to?

angstypant · 17/09/2024 17:28

So many I cant even count. I'm in my late 50s. Some are old. All are great
At least 6-7 black wool/cashmere for starters.
Wrap dressing gown style
Fitted military style
Cashmere cocoon style
A thicker dressing gown style
3/4 straight cut
3/4 belted style
Funnel necked style

Then there are several camel/cashmere
A couple of navy wool
Khaki wool

Three tweedy/checked
7-8 insulated puffer

Trenches in different colours and lengths

On and on

shellyleppard · 17/09/2024 17:28

Just one for me 😀

Cattery · 17/09/2024 17:29

5 long coats I think and lots of jackets

stayathomer · 17/09/2024 17:30

I always had eg a rain coat that had an inner coat and then like that a good coat (to look nice and be warm when it wasn’t raining!) and a puffs jacket. Now I just have a rain coat. Ugh. New life goal- buy a pretty wool coat!!

GrazingSheep · 17/09/2024 17:33

I have 6 including rain coats, puffer coats and wool coats. I got my 7th today - a gorgeous dark green cashmere coat.

GettingStuffed · 17/09/2024 19:14

Ten or thereabouts. Every time I count I remember another one. I'm not counting fleeces or heavyweight hoodies

@angstypants - Im Irish we tend to go to funerals of everyone we know even tangentially - Also I'm of an age where - lots of people's parents are passing on as well as aunts and uncles.

I have a weakness for coats, so about 20, but a few are in the size below my current one 😬😳

Holidayhell22 · 17/09/2024 19:38

One very warm, waterproof puffer style coat. This is my warmest coat which I can wear when it’s very cold or wet and I’m walking in the elements.
A black wool coat for best.
A duffel coat with a fur hood for next best.
A waterproof dark green coat for when it’s not quite cold enough for the first coat.
I also have a lightweight puffer style coat without a hood for when it’s not raining and above 8-10 degrees.
A waterproof navy coat for warmer but wet days.
Plus a lightweight windproof summer coat.
A leather jacket
A pashmina/woollen shawl which I use for when I’ve been swimming in winter.
Plus a couple of blazers/suit style jackets.
I do walk a lot though.

Kitkat1523 · 17/09/2024 19:40

5 coats ( not including jackets)

ladygindiva · 17/09/2024 19:41

Two; a thick warm weatherproof parka with deep pockets ( my scruffy everyday winter coat) and a nice wool fitted knee length number for " smart" or those fresh dry winter days.

ladygindiva · 17/09/2024 19:42

They are both khaki, my go to neutral.

susiedaisy1912 · 17/09/2024 19:42

2

Twilightstarbright · 17/09/2024 19:42

Lots! Given I live in the UK I wear a coat most of the year so it’s a better cost per wear than my summer clothes which didn’t even get worn this year!

Doggymummar · 17/09/2024 19:42

I have 4 from pre COVID, I never go anywhere so they are redundant really

Lovelynames123 · 17/09/2024 19:43

3 puffer type in different colours
1 sleeping bag type
1 hoodless barbour
2 gilets
2 leather jackets
Several lightweight rain coats
1 smart 'wool' coat

Obviously too many but some are years old!

Bunnyhair · 17/09/2024 19:46

I have my summer winter coat (fleece lined and waterproof) and my winter winter coat (ankle length down water-resistant duvet coat). I gave up owning any outerwear that’s not water resistant because it’s always bloody raining.

birthdaymom · 17/09/2024 19:46

1 smart coat
1 long waterproof puffer
1 gilet for when it's chilly but not freezing

I like a smart coat when I go out too, the gilet or puffer would ruin the look, defo get yourself a new smart one

Restaurantcritic · 17/09/2024 19:48

More than I need but some are years old.

2 short puffas in different colours
2 quilted in different colours
Fleeve lined raincoat
Long puffa
2 woolly bobbly ones.
Fake leopard print
1rubberised jacket
2 parkas

Not bought new one in ages

JumpstartMondays · 17/09/2024 19:52

Two.

One is a long warm hooded puffer coat thing and the other is a north face raincoat with a zip in fleece.

I really don't get the need for any more 🤣

And wool coats - where's the hood?! What good is a winter coat without a hood?!!

Babbahabba · 17/09/2024 20:04

I only have four coats- a cagoule type thing, short denim jacket, short fake leather jacket & a full length puffer type thing. Not sure why people need so many coats 😂

Babbahabba · 17/09/2024 20:05

I also have three blazer/suit type jackets for work but don't really see them as coats.

Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain · 17/09/2024 20:34

I have quite a few but have also got rid of quite a few in recent years.

Now I have three wool coats, black, light colour and a tweed one.

One main puffa coat for proper winter.

A couple of wool jackets to wear with trousers in autumn, so not full on winter coats.

A mac, but I always get chilly in those.

A light coloured fluffy type thing, cropped, I don't even know what that is.

I don't count blazers/thin jackets as these are not coats!

I don't get the 'hood' thing because I don't have a dog and I have an umbrella, so I wouldn't be walking so much in the rain as some people- when I did walk outside a lot, I did have a walking jacket.

I get a lot of wear out of winter coats as I prefer to wear lighter things underneath and throw on my big winter coat, I'm already wearing the tweed one. I'm not a big fan of large jumpers and then a coat, too much bulk and feels restrictive.

Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain · 17/09/2024 20:38

You know you can get a waterproof spray if you love a coat but don't want it to get too wet. It won't cope with being saturated but is fine for everyday popping in and out of places. I spray my wool coats. Many puffas aren't waterproof either.

I hate that so many smart coats now are not wool but horrible thin polyester which is not warm. I only buy second-hand ones for this reason!
