How many winter coats do you have?

Whatchamacall · 17/09/2024 10:51

For as long as I can remember I have always had a smart wool coat and a casual water resistant puffer style as the absolute minimum. Right now I also have a fleece jacket, a waterproof poncho and a ridiculously impractical but joyful jacket thing.
I need to replace my wool coat and my husband is surprised that I need to and that I can’t rely on what I have. (He’s not being a d*ck and I don’t need to LTB). For context I do hybrid working and do need to look smart often but not always, I also like to wear a smart coat if I am wearing a nice outfit for dinner etc.
So… how does this benchmark and am I being excessive??!

I have so many. Just counted at least ten coats and as many jackets/blazers.

WhiteNegroni · 17/09/2024 21:48

Zara navy knee-length belted coat - smart but very old and thin
Agnés B. smart short black hooded coat
Navy Barbour with warm lining
Green parka with warm
leopard lining - emergency purchase
Opera cloak

So 3/5 are smart coats. One cannot just substitute a casual coat when a smart one is needed.

Saschka · 17/09/2024 21:51

None! It hasn’t been cold enough in recent years, I’ve been fine with a jumper and a thin waterproof raincoat.

TheOGCCL · 17/09/2024 21:52

I find coats very hard as I don't have much space so can't have loads of options. Hoods are a big thing for me. I want one as otherwise it's guaranteed to rain but also appreciate they never look smart.

I have one coat (which unfortunately needs replacing) that is my winter coat. It's smart casual, not too long and not too warm (despite feeling the cold, I don't need a full on 'football watching puffa').

I bought a smart coat. It's not as warm as the other one and gets very little wear.

I also have a range of jackets which can be made warmer by adding a thin gilet so I get more wear.

In the UK, coats are some of our most hard working, most worn items. If you're interested in S&B I think you are going to want a few for variety. Otherwise it can feel like you spent the whole winter in the same boring old coat. For me that isnt sparking joy.

TheLeadbetterLife · 17/09/2024 22:08

None since I moved to a warm country, and I don't miss them at all. I hate being wrapped up in loads of layers.

I have one beautiful vintage sheepskin coat for when I go to cold places, but it spends most of its time in a garment bag these days.

redtrain123 · 17/09/2024 22:37

Winter coats -
long camel wool trench coat (but lost it belt)
thick padded quilted coat
shorter Wool aviation jacket
short green wool coat

I did have an ‘autumn and spring’ coat, good for the cold but not freezing winter days, but the zip went and it was getting old. Need to replace this mid-warmth coat. (Seasalt Janelle?)

I love a decent coat.

MWNA · 17/09/2024 15:58

So two then.

Well the question was how many winter coats do you have so one. I also have one summer coat so would have answered two to the question how many coats do you have. (Yes, being pedantic is part of my job description).

Seriously impressed by the number of coats people on here own. They all sound very nice.

VenusClapTrap · 18/09/2024 08:00

Well if we’re talking proper winter, and not including lightweight summer and between season ones, then I have:
Big North Face arctic parka (zip has gone though so need to investigate repair, or replace)
Brown leather trench
Long smart Rainsisters raincoat
casual rain coat
Wool country jacket for work

And like a pp, I also have a black velvet ‘funeral’ coat. I don’t go to many funerals really, but it’s useful to have a good, smart, formal coat in the wardrobe ready for such occasions. It also comes out every year for Remembrance Sunday.

VenusClapTrap · 18/09/2024 08:02

Forgot to answer storage question - I have a wardrobe for coats out of season or that I don’t wear much. The rest live on hooks in the boot/utility/muddy child processing room.

saltysandysea · 18/09/2024 08:06

About 5 winter (autumn & spring depending on weather)

2 wool ones - different colours & one much smarter than the other
rain jacket
lightweight shower proof jacket for walks in milder weather
puffer/down jacket for cold outdoor walks etc

MouseofCommons · 18/09/2024 08:07

Maggot coat for walking to work
2 x puffers for casual.
Ski coat for proper cold days.
Smart tweed grandad style coat.
Practical warm and waterproof coat for before and after parkrun.
Old flattened puffer for car.

So that's 7.

MouseofCommons · 18/09/2024 08:08

Ah, and a black funeral coat. It's only primark but will last for ever. It's only worn at funerals though.

MountUnpleasant · 18/09/2024 08:10

I have one coat full stop. This thread has made me realise people have different coats for different reasons!

Whatchamacall · 17/09/2024 11:43

Thank you all, it doesn’t feel like I’m an outlier which is helpful.
For those with 10 plus coats, where do you store them? I live in a terrace house with what I think is good fitted storage but I think I’m at my max storage wise.

I have too many coats and have 3 that I keep at work 😁 In my defence I have to be out and about a lot and the weather changes too frequently to rely on one coat (that’s my excuse anyway). I love a winter coat and have just bought another off Vinted 🤭

TodayThisName · 18/09/2024 08:16

I have quite a few, but I shop secondhand so the ones I have were ridiculous bargains picked up over the years. I think I probably have about 10 warm or waterproof coats.

I love my fancy full length wool ones most but thet are so warm I rarely get the chance to wear them!

Currently looking for a replacement lightweight waterproof (the type you can pop in a bag) as that's my most worn one!

zaxxon · 18/09/2024 08:30

One, bought in 1998. I relined it myself once but it's looking pretty tired. Probably time to get a new one, but it's hard to choose on eBay where you can't try them on.

Whatchamacall · 18/09/2024 09:48

So many replies! Those of you with loads, do you tend to reach for one or do you actively rotate or match each one to your outfits?
Someone upthread said that if you are into style and beauty you will have to have lots of coats. I have to politely disagree, I am in to style and beauty but my circumstances mean that I can’t have loads of coats at one time. Every time I need a new one I spend a lot of time assessing what is in my current wardrobe and what coat will compliment the most things.

2 really. I have a smart(er) one - dark brown cotton twill outer, padded/insulated and with part fleece lining that I used to wear for work ( retired now). Then I have my waterproof padded one that I bought during lockdown when my entire life was spent with my friend and her 3 little ones tramping round the park in the mud and rain.

I do have a zip up hoodie and a smarter padded jacket but neither are really suitable for full on winter wear. I also have a "hippie unique" jacket that I made myself from charity shop woollen jumpers that I turned into boiled wool in the washing machine. It is very warm and I usually use it for things like camping!

I’d love to see the homemade “hippy unique” jacket

A Smart wool swing coat.
A Parka.
A Smart wool Maternity coat that I've kept for this winter as I'll be able to wrap it round baby in sling.
A lighter weight showerproof jacket.

Plus blazers and a denim jacket but I don't consider those 'winter coats'.

MotherWol · 18/09/2024 10:05

Three at the moment: a warm Joules waterproof jacket for playgrounds and country walks, a lightweight waterproof jacket (same but for spring), and a beige trench coat (my office coat). I need to find a smart black wool coat, and probably a black trench coat as I feel like my existing coats are too casual and don't look right over smarter outfits, I've been on the lookout for a wool coat that doesn't look like a dressing gown for so long.

Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain · 18/09/2024 10:09

I gave all my fake furs to my young people, I don't feel I can style them so well these days.

I definitely take the coat into account when pulling my outfit together, I plan what coat to wear with it, as some collars/looks don't go well with some coats.

I tend to wear cropped jackets with long skirts, and long voluminous wool coats on top of short skirts. I am already wearing my black and white tweed oversized coat on top of autumn outfits, saves breaking the thermal vests out too early.

Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain · 18/09/2024 10:11

@MotherWol have you been on Vinted? There are tonnes of mid-length wool/mix coats on there in all colours.

Admittedly my search of red coats (thinking burgundy fashion this year) did bring up some corkers from the 90's, but there are so many nice good label or older label coats, lined and so much better quality than what's in the shops now. I am only letting you know this as I have already bought my winter coats on there!

VenusClapTrap · 18/09/2024 10:13

This thread has made me want a tweed coat.
