Do people still bother with eyeshadow?

I have so many eyeshadows from beauty advent calendars, GWPs etc, but they take forever to use up and I hardly ever hit pan.

But when I look around at other women in shops, at work, out and about etc it seems not many bother with eyeshadow anymore. And yet they're always in beauty boxes. Actually it seems people wear less make up than they used to, I feel a bit of an anomaly wearing make up when I go to the office.

Is it just a thing people wear on nights out/special occasions these days? I don't go to many of those so unsure...

It's actually really nice to hear from other women in their 40s and 50s with hooded eyes - I really dislike my eyes because of it and it feels like I am surrounded by women with huge dark-fringed eyes and naturally defined sockets and lids 😂

I feel you! 😂

I usually just sweep some of my bronzer over my eyelids so there's a bit of colour but nothing too out there. I think very simple fresh makeup seems to be the thing these days

suburburban · 13/09/2024 11:36

Yes subtle stuff usually greys or neutrals

I have some cream sticks as well but they don't seem that great

I use eye primer as it helps eyeshadow stay on

Jk987 · 13/09/2024 11:58

I wear shades of brown or grey. It makes my eyes stand out more. I look tired without it.

I do the same, make up these days is almost like you don't want anyone to actually notice it 😂but gain the benefits of having some on!

I found a gorgeous Dior 5 palette earlier this year and I actually use all of them, very pretty, very subtle and stays on! bronze/browns/peach combo, lovely!

I don't know if it's just me but I'm finding that eyeshadows have massively declined in quality and even expensive ones seem to crumble all over the place and flake. Now I'm 50 I don't want the powder settling into my wrinkles!
So I've been buying creamy stick eyeshadows in really subtle neutral shades, like my own skin but better iyswim. Unless up close you'd not notice I was wearing eyeshadow tbh.
Maybe it's this that you are noticing. Have also been tight lining my upper lid with kohl (can't do wings despite trying) so am finding the proper colourful eyeshadow pakettes obsolete

People are saying they don't wear eye shadow but seem to exclude all the things that they DO put on their lids - base coverage etc, natural colours. It's still eyeshadow - it's just not lurid colours.

I've just started wearing it daily after not wearing it for years (Trinny London Wisdom). It's quite subtle but I like it.

teachertalktime · 13/09/2024 13:13

I fear I'm in the minority, but I wear eyeshadow every day and change up the colours! Today was a glittery black/grey, I wore bright green earlier this week! The students at school know me as 'eyeshadow/eyeliner teacher', which I find amusing :)

notacooldad · 13/09/2024 13:55

I wish I could but it just looks awful on me. Same with eyeliner. It looks lovely on other people though
I swear that there's colours and techniques that will make you look fabulous with shadow.
Ha e a look on YouTube or try a make up counter for ideas.

suburburban · 13/09/2024 14:05

I looked at Erica Taylor and tried to do a different way of putting darker shade above crease to lift eye like a wing shape

It looked ok but took ages so went back to darker in crease

I think it's the 'clean girl' trend where you're supposed to look like you're not wearing any makeup. I'm sure eyeshadow will come back around again soon.

This is my favourite too.

I wear eyeshadow almost every day! Tend to go for a more natural/neutral look day to day but love something bold for a night out.

This is very young women though who look naturally fresh.

Less clean girl more exhausted woman here😅

I particularly like Erborian BB cream and it has serum in it.
Light and natural but does the hard work, smidge of blusher, grey/ mauve creamy eyeshadow or stick applied as per the hooded lid tutorials, mascara and cool pink lipstick or balm stick

I'm very pale and look see through without make up
Jane Iredale does lovely creamy eyeshadows btw plus Trinny London pots

Purpleavocado · 13/09/2024 18:03

I wear subtle eyeshadow every day and a bit of eyeliner. I have very dark brown eyes and fairly pale skin, and I think they look too dark without some definition

DillDanding · 13/09/2024 18:12

I love to do a smoky eye if I’m going out. Friends sometimes ask me to do
their makeup for them so I think I’m ok at it.

For every day, I wear a couple of nudestix eye pencils over my lids in warm brown colour or an eyeshadow. I have very dark brown eyes and I think that lends itself to eye makeup with looking too ‘done’.

But I really love the ritual of doing a proper look with eyeshadows. I follow so many make up artists on IG and buy far too much makeup.

CandyLeBonBon · 13/09/2024 18:23

I do. I'm often on camera so if I don't I look as I'm coming down with myxomatosis! But I gave changed my eyeshadow look to better suit my craggy changing face and eye shape

dayslikethese1 · 14/09/2024 05:23

I love eyeshadow and do all kinds of colours! Not too dark though. I have hooded eyes too. I guess I'm not on trend 😁I like to match it to my outfit like a pp. Think I have 4 or 5 palettes which is a bit excessive though none were pricey brands.
