New diamond ring for myself

newdiamondring · 05/09/2024 16:18

Name changed

Single mum by choice to 2 amazing 12 year olds
Had a very tough four years due to stress, poor health, and general depression which has been hellish
Am through it.
Kids just started at secondary school, and I get a bonus in October.
I want to buy myself a present to say well done for the last 13 years.

I've read loads about lab diamonds and would love a large eternity ring.

I wear a lovely ring on my right 3rd finger already which I don't want to move as it has massive emotional value. It lives there.

Qus.

What ring should I get?
Which ring should I wear it on?
Would it be weird to wear a ring on my left wedding finger? I don't care but many might think I've got engaged!?

All thoughts and ideas welcome 🙏

Lab grown diamonds don't hold their value whereas mined diamonds do. I think of lab diamonds as pretty fakes.

They aren't fake. They're chemically identical, just don't involve slavery and environmental ruin from mining.

nosmartphone · 06/09/2024 11:38

Just to say they do bespoke - see what they could create for your £5k budget would be my advice.

I am erring towards LG diamonds for this reason.

This is the one that I was looking at last night

www.jamesallen.com/wedding-rings/womens-eternity/14k-white-gold-low-dome-basket-lab-created-diamond-eternity-ring-5-ctw-f-g-vs2-si1-item-128302

Having read your feedback and thoughts i may need to consider a 5 or 7 stone ring though.

Is this too boring or too much like a wedding ring?

The other thing is metal colour. I tend to wear a mix of gold and white metal - my ring on my right hand is white gold. I'd prefer platinum I think as easier to clean.

My engagement ring is white gold and I opted for platinum for the LG eternity ring. Much prefer the platinum, it’s so clean and bright looking. The white gold will need to be dipped to keep it looking good. That ring is lovely but I’d worry about the comfort if there are diamonds all the way around. This isn’t my ring but it’s this style and it’s very comfortable as the diamonds don’t sit between the fingers. Re people saying lab grown are fake, they are identical to mined diamonds in composition and appearance (apart from the fact that you can get a much nicer diamond for your money when it’s LG), the only difference is how it’s sourced. To be honest I’m much more comfortable knowing a diamond was made in a lab rather than mined. The diamond mining industry is extremely unethical, and even with a certificate I’d be concerned about ethical issues. You’ll get so much bang for your buck with LG, hope you find your perfect ring ❤️

I got a platinum 3/4 lab eternity directly from China for an unbelievable price. £300! Not sure of carat weight - I bought by size for stacking purposes, so the diamonds are 2.5mm across. It's lovely! And the local jewellers grumpily confirmed they're real diamonds.

Just checking you are adding VAT/import costs to James Allen prices? They are in the US so although that website shows £ it’s not the total cost…

@Corksoles where from? That's amazing.

@Janwholovesjam yes good point. I wasn't sure what the extra £££ would be.
Going to take a look at the website someone shared earlier today that's London based.

@Meltedchocolateteapot where is your ring from?
💯 agree on the lab grown versus mined point.

100% this place

https://londondiamonds.com/

Have a look on their instagram page. I have an amazing ring from here and it was a fraction of what they charge in Goldsmiths etc plus the customer service is second to none.

@nosmartphone thank you. Taking a look right now.

What style is your ring?

My engagement ring isn't a lab diamond but most of my friends rings are, and you're never know - I feel quite bad for telling my now husband I only wanted a real diamond as he'd have saved a fair chunk! Steven Stone is a good jeweller for lab grown diamonds (my own ring is from there) - you can choose the settings, have a play on their website and see if it takes your fancy or if you want something more unique?

arinya · 06/09/2024 19:16

I don’t wear jewellery except my wedding rings but I saw this and couldn’t stop looking at it 😍

I saw someone on TV talking about LG diamonds.
They described it as ice formed in a puddle in your garden is ice. Ice in your freezer is still ice. Just made differently

And there's the ugly side of "Blood Diamonds"

I got it here, it’s in Ireland but they ship internationally

My eternity ring is lab diamonds which look identical to the mined diamond in my engagement ring. It’s a half hoop of seven alternate round and baguette cut stones. If you value your sanity, don’t have stones all the way round, it’ll drive you mad!

Boxofstars · 07/09/2024 01:00

Diamond heaven and serendipity diamonds are good.

Wellee · 07/09/2024 01:44

not sure why you think it’s warranted? If it’s been that hellish surely you should be treating your kids to something? Not a ring to yourself!

Wellee · 07/09/2024 01:48

Just ridiculous. You want some kind of prize

to reward yourself because you cared for your kids?!

bpirockin · 07/09/2024 03:34

I've seen several beautiful, and unique rings made by Thurlwell's on The Pantiles, and you can be as involved in the process as you like.

PercyTrevelyan · 07/09/2024 03:44

I bought myself a lab grown diamond (also with my bonus money).

Did a lot of research and decided to go with James Allen in the end. 1.2 carat on a rub over setting. They had a 25% off offer on lab grown diamonds and 20% off rings so if you do go with them wait till there's an offer.

I really love it, I wear it on my right hand ring finger. I deliberated for sooo long on whether to get it at all, then if lab grown or not, if JA is legit or not etc etc but it all worked out Grin

Oh do shut up. Life is hard and short, and if the OP wants to use her own money to buy herself something she'll treasure, why the heck shouldn't she?

SuperSange · 07/09/2024 07:05

@Wellee Are you quite well? A grown ass woman has had a rough trot and wants to buy something for herself? Not everyone martyrs themselves in the alter of motherhood. And nor should they. She's worked hard, why the hell shouldn't she buy something for herself if she can afford it? It's got bugger all to do with you.

+1 for vintage. The Sworders jewellery sale is at the end of the month- catalogue should be online in a day or two, and all the auction houses have them before Christmas
