What clothes are you buying for autumn?

I have spent the past four months in cut off jeans and two summer dresses but yesterday's cold weather made me realise I need some new clothes for autumn/winter.

I know nothing about clothes/fashion and tend to just get my cues from what I see others wearing. I'd love to know what everyone else is getting.

I'm 50, FWIW, and work in a fairly casual office and need clothes for both work and home as for various reasons I didn't have anything new last year.

Please inspire me with what you're buying!

I'm only buying what I actually need (in the literal sense). So it's going to be a pair of lightweight trainers and a pair of boots.

Notellinganyone · 23/08/2024 14:28

Watching too!

Anotherusername2024 · 23/08/2024 14:39

I really fancy a purple suit I've seen in next currently debating whether I just like it and would struggle to wear it or of I could make it work day to day without looking like I have just left the office.

SingingSands · 23/08/2024 14:56

I'm on a lookout for some leather boots as my old faithfuls need replacing. Something I can wear commuting, in the office and at weekends.

Precipice · 23/08/2024 15:03

What did you wear in spring? Last year? You say you didn't 'have anything new', but you must have had clothes. What's wrong with them now?

I need new trainers (mine have developed a small hole) and would like a pair of casual shoes for spring/autumn that can withstand rain well. The trainers I tend to get are ASICS, which are super comfortable but not waterproof, whereas my other main shoes for this type of temperature are suede. I've got black derbies, but I tend to wear them for dressed-up wear and my walking boots are for colder seasons, so I've got a bit of a gap.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 23/08/2024 15:16

If you like cut-off jeans, you'd probably find a couple of pairs of jeans that you can roll up and wear with boots useful.

And if you liked the shape of your summer dresses, maybe look for a similar shape but in thicker fabric/with longer sleeves that you can wear with tights.

I’ve lost loads of weight so quite a bit!

im after/have recently acquired:

  • levis 501s in a darker denim (had white and pale denim in summer and love them)
  • knee high boots to wear with dresses/skirts.
  • i want a thick wool longish navy coat. I wanted one last year and the year before but haven’t found it within my budget yet!
  • dark coloured trainers.
Perfectlystill · 23/08/2024 16:31

I've been loving my White Company white boyfriend jeans but they are really quite grubby now and also I don't want white for winter. So thinking I may look at the White Company for inspo.

I also had a look at Baukjen's new in stuff but it all looked a bit boring.

501s are a good idea @EspanaPorfavor - I haven had any since the 80s but absolutely loved them then.

Might go and try some on!

I'm toying with this cardigan at John Lewis:

Nice colour but not sure I'd look like a model in it...

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 23/08/2024 16:54

I need some new Chelsea boots hopefully M&S will have some that aren’t burgundy

I bought a long indigo denim skirt so some tights that won’t cause it to ride up

I might look for a wine/burgundy jumper as that’s in trend and the colour suits me.

otherwise I am digging my leopard coat out and embracing my inner Kat Slater

StellaCruella · 23/08/2024 16:59

I'm very into boiler suits!

CharlotteRumpling · 23/08/2024 17:04

I am on a no buy this year but I would like a jumper or corduroy dress.

SleepPrettyDarling · 23/08/2024 17:05

I bought a beige cashmere jumper and a pink coat last week. I don’t look forward to autumn/winter, but I do love the rich textures and colours.

HoxtHun · 23/08/2024 17:31

I know nothing about clothes/fashion

I never know what this means … Particularly written by anyone who has access to the internet.

Presumably if you like The White Company you’re happy with normal fairly muted mainstream trickled down fashion? And if you find Baukjen boring you might want something slightly quirkier?

Toast
Plumo
Palava
Colenimo

all have dresses, tops, trousers and knitwear that would work for work or home life.

American Vintage

has plain, chic shapes in glorious technicolour.

All of these are online shops. Forget what other people are wearing - dive in and choose what you love yourself.

I have never felt so guilty for liking normcore!😂

lindyloo57 · 23/08/2024 17:35

I just brought a celtic &co wool coat from next clearance, I was brave and got it in mustard, all my coats are black and one in leapard print, I wanted to brighten myself up.

HoxtHun · 23/08/2024 17:36

Sorry!

(I think what I meant was that the OP clearly isn’t entirely remote from what normal people wear. I mean, she isn’t dressing solely from the farm shop or a 200 year old trunk found in her cellar …)

StarDolphins · 23/08/2024 17:38

I’m 50 & I’ll be buying cropped (to tile top of my jeans, not like a teen) Chucky knit jumpers in green, yellow & cream. Few cute/unusual t-shirts & shirts for underneath.

jeans will be new carrot leg jeans & wide leg ones too.

Shoes will be the ones from last year, DM lace up boots, Chelsea boots & converse.

I have just bought a new quilted Uniqlo bag too.

henlake7 · 23/08/2024 17:40

I have bought so much stuff! Mainly coz I had to replace my entire wardrobe (next year I doubt I'll do much shopping at all and TBF it has all been in cheap shops, sales or Vinted).

Ive bought various dresses, a few nice jumpers, a couple of coats (a wooltype long army green one and a plaid trench). Also some nice black chelsea boots.

oh, and picked up that viral oversized jumper from Primark the other day! I know, I know....Primark!! ewww. The cut and quality varies greatly but when they get it right they really get it right. I got the camel one and its so cosy and actually looks expensive.
Apparently they are also going to do it in a oxblood colour so Im def waiting on that!😊

CharlotteRumpling · 23/08/2024 17:41

Damn I just looked at American Vintage @HoxtHun and I like a lot of their glorious technicoloured wares, which is bad as I am on a no-buy. I am pretty staid in my fashion choices but I do wear a lot of colour.

wippandzipp · 23/08/2024 17:48

I'm already bought jeans to wear. One black pair of jeans £15 from matalan called Grace, straight leg boyfriend style, I get the shorter length to wear with boots. Don't think I'll be buying any new tops, as I got some in Jan sales. I'm really trying to wear what I have already now for this autumn, winter. 2 lots of Boots that will last another year.

Rina66 · 23/08/2024 17:55

I really want this AllSaints camo leopard shacket but I'm waiting for a 20% off code!

GreenPoppy · 23/08/2024 18:53

I've bought this jacket from Zara, in the white colour.
